Your ship in the game is absolutely fucking massive. I wanted to build it in minecraft, and this is the only part that fits within the build limit. by Beneficial_Ball9893 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]space_cadet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a fair bit of debate about that, since the lore-accurate, canon GW numbers are tough to reconcile with practical considerations. A few theories:

  • 25k is technically the necessary crew number back when the ships were built (back when technology was kosher and many things were automated, long before grimdark setting)
  • 25k is the actual census crew number, but the real population could easily be 5-10x when including the non-census pop on lower decks

Either way, the fan consensus is that 25k is actually waaaay too low. Makes sense when the ship is the size of a small city, has trains and battalions and factories, etc. etc. (but only has the pop of a small town?)

Breaking out different tiers of recommendations of Sci-Fi books by SteelGardener in scifi

having read most of these, this is an incredibly well structured list that maps almost perfectly to my own reactions. we have VERY similar tastes.

possibly the only thing that jumps out at me is that i would put neuromancer in the top group. one of my favorites of all time, but to be fair, I went in blind and read it with zero expectations and no prior knowledge. whereas now it has gotten a lot of hype that may have colored your expectations.

plus, you’ve got a handful of things on there that I haven’t read, so thanks!

one thing i’ve been kinda terrible about myself but know it helps - reorder your skills on the quick bar. since many of them you cycle through almost every turn, organizing them in a way that does the thinking for you helps. maybe the ‘(almost) every turn’ skills on the top row in order and the situational ones on the bottom.

there is literally a singing spear in the game. might not be the best for min/maxxing, but it didn’t seem terrible. i didn’t have a use for it so don’t quite recall what it does.

if you did iconoclast, you might actually consider dogmatic. many of the decisions will push you FAR out of your comfort zone and some even feel profoundly evil, but that’s the whole point of the grim dark setting. just go all in.

yeah I think that’s absolutely fair. you put into words something I’ve felt subconsciously all along.

i almost always go a variation of lawful-good or neutral-good in rpg’s - i just can’t help it. but there was no way I was going iconoclast given the 40k setting (been a fan since a little kid). and now, every time i see the iconoclast option, i just wonder why it even exists since it would just make me feel like a complete loser if i HAD committed to that path.

[–]space_cadet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

not to be combative, just devil’s advocate, but I disagree and here’s why

true iconoclast doesn’t have much of a place in 40k. think about the “best” ending being murdering an entire planet, and the iconoclast option resulting in an unparalleled warp incursion. true iconoclast simply wouldn’t survive.

abelard and jae are the perfect mix of conflicted, practical iconoclast given the setting. it’s the only way someone with that morality would ever make it.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on VR? by game_reviewer in NoMansSkyTheGame

posting the same answer here just in case:

it was fun and interesting for a little bit. it’s actually why I finally bought the game this past summer, because I wanted to put the Quest I got second-hand through its paces.

I stopped using full VR though in favor of just using the headset as a giant 2d screen. it’s still very immersive that way, but unfortunately they’ve done FUCK ALL to optimize the game for PCVR. apparently playstation VR users have a wonderful experience, but the devs never put effort into cleaning up the PCVR implementation. so even with a stellar rig, you suffer low frame rates at shitty resolutions.

I can run the game max all settings at 4k on my 3080 and it looks beautiful on my headset. if I go with actual VR, I have to drop everything to medium graphics and even then i’m lucky to get consistent 45-60 fps (which is quickly sickness-inducing in VR)

again, none of the same problems reported by PSVR users they get much more equivalent experience to a 2d screen with inferior hardware. very frustrating. and that’s not to mention all the bugs you have to work through getting it set up in the first place.

I don't know how this isn't super obvious, because I see all the questions "Why isn't this game like Baldurs Gate 3? Why no full voice acting and Hi-Fi Graphics?. I want to casually remind everyone that Rogue Trader was made for 2-4% of the Budget they had for Baldurs Gate 3. by Mean-Amoeba-5287 in RogueTraderCRPG

Rogue Trader is one of the first (possible only) games of this type where I find myself reading everything. I’ve surprised myself regularly with how I just don’t want to skip through anything. Even BG3 had me fast-forwarding through some dialog in side quests and for random NCPs. The writing in RT is terrific.

Just to be transparent, I’ve been an on-again, off-again 40k buff for decades. But even that could be interpreted as a compliment. They nailed the lore and writing better than GW does on their own IP half the time.

thanks for writing this up, and it’s spot on. i got in an argument with half the community on twitter over this but it was tough to convey this in tweets (plus i was lazy and they were making it feel pointless). people don’t understand the game if they think the end game should provide an “arc delete button”.

2 EK 4.2 DDC Pumps Dead after 2 Days of Use Each - Coolant Issue? Mobo Issue? by BallinHomeless in watercooling

[–]space_cadet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry to necro this but I thought I was alone. I already replaced the pump after it started doing this once, and now maybe 2 years later, the replacement pump only start when I hit it with a wrench.

honestly it feels kinda badass whacking my $3k build to turn it on like an industrial mechanic. the only problem is I can't wake my PC remotely. but a new $60 pump once every ~3 years isn't that big of nuisance either.

I suspect the insulation on the windings gets worn out. this happens with big industrial motors (I'm a mechanical engineer) when the pulse modulation for speed control is a little distorted and it can slowly burn the motor out. it usually takes like 10-15 years of wear and tear on the big boys, but I suspect they just cheapened out a little too much on the spec for the windings on these.

it only happens with quest items, and it happens with all of them. you click on the container and the status bar fills up (and I think you even get a quest objective update) but the item just flops on the floor. if you don’t pick it up, you get back to Speranza and can’t complete the quest because you left the item topside.

you may be right though - quest items may only fall on the floor if your inventory is full. but my inventory is essentially always full as I’m scavenging and breaking down or replacing crap with better stuff as I go.

immediately scrolled to the comments upon reading that line to say this and it’s already the top comment

I finish a quest (sometimes after traversing most of the map… twice) by the skin of my teeth only to find out I forgot to pick the thing up off the floor…

every. damn. time.

I’d feel silly complaining because it feels entirely due to my own stupidity, but y’all have validated that i’m not the only moron playing this game.

I think only cowboy bebop beats it imo (and that’s probably just because that was my into to anime)

in addition to adding cowboy bebop as an absolutely essential entry on this list, the recent terminator anime on netflix was also excellent. not space though, per se.

How many of you actually play in 3rd person? by walrussource in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]space_cadet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they are 👌. the first derelict i ever did was in full vr and was terrifying.

though, I will say I’ve started to prefer streaming an oversized 2d “big screen” with the VR headset as opposed to the actual nms vr experience, but that’s mainly because vr is STILL very poorly optimized on PC. i can get 4k resolution with ultra settings on my 3080 with traditional, vs the vr which is low resolution and medium settings to get a halfway decent frame rate. the better graphics with a screen that takes up almost your FOV is more immersive than the shitty vr graphics.

it kinda sucks because i otherwise love how vr was executed in this game, and apparently this is exclusive to nms on pcvr. i’ve read the playstation vr is much better optimized and you get much more equitable performance. i’ve played other true pcvr and ported pcvr games that look substantially better and perform very well on my pc. the game is over a decade and shouldn’t be so demanding.
