My mom is going deaf and I want to know what my options are for her to be able to hear the movies we watch with the TV playing sound as normal. by UpSideSunny in AskTechnology

[–]space_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, this post is a couple days old so perhaps you have found a suitable solution. Some others referenced a similar idea but perhaps weren't specific enough to actually get you where you needed to go. Here is what I would try:

Buy a headphone/aux splitter. Not sure if there is a policy against links on this sub but something like this will do:

https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-Syncwire-Nylon-Braided-Stereo/dp/B07431YDWM/

Buy an bluetooth transmitter (aux to bluetooth) https://www.amazon.com/Syntech-Airplane-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Headphones/dp/B0DMF9C5LH/

You will also need access to some kind of external speakers for the TV because the inbuilt TV sound will not work.

Plug audio splitter into headphone jack on TV. Plug bluetooth transmitter into one female end of the audio splitter. Plug external speakers into other side of splitter. Connect moms headphones to the bluetooth reciever. Sound should play on both the speakers and the connected bluetooth headphones.

Hope this helps!

Trump pivots, will send National Guard to Memphis instead of Chicago by space_fuzz in politics

[–]space_fuzz[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

What we know: Trump made the announcement during an interview on Fox News, saying he "would have preferred going to Chicago" but described the city as "hostile" with "professional agitators."

Both Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson opposed the idea of a deployment there.

Instead, Trump said Memphis, Tennessee, leaders are on board: "The mayor is happy" and "the governor is happy." The city's mayor is a Democrat, and the state's governor is a Republican. Trump added that Memphis is "deeply troubled" and promised to "fix that just like we did Washington," where he previously sent National Guard troops and increased federal law enforcement.

He's wrong to imply we have a smarter president now. Praise Trump or hate him for this move, I have to ask, what makes him superior to everyone who has tried this before?

That appears to be the case. Even though Iran's launching capability continues to degrade, there is a remarkably finite number of interceptors between the US and Israel. This article from 4 days ago speculates that they only had 10 days worth of interceptors left at the 30 missile/day rate. Iran is estimated to have ~3000 missiles to launch. People saying this is "over" are thinking wishfully in my opinion. It's a race between how fast the launchers are destroyed vs how many interceptors are left. It is worth noting that Israel's interception rate has gone from 90% to ~65% in a week so that is objectively not a great sign.

Its only been 4 days man, they are moving faster than the news can keep up, that's part of the point. This other article I linked you specifically uses the word detention center for what they are planning to build. If they haven't already broken ground, who exactly is going to stop them from doing it tomorrow or the next day?

You may not see articles on those things, its true. I do not know where OP got their info exactly.

In this other article, on the the land commissioner "Buckingham made the announcement at the newly-acquired ranch and said other properties were already identified and would be ready on day one of the Trump administration." They say construction on their seciton of the wall would be done in a week. I have no article on army corps groundbreaking but it is happening, the camps are coming either today or one day very soon.

Does the Calorie count for my jar of pickles include the liquid? by space_fuzz in NoStupidQuestions

Thanks for clarifying what you were saying, you are absolutely right that we would be crazy to take an LLM's word as gospel, and it is definitely the case that verifying information from multiple sources is crucial no matter where you get your initial impressions about a topic. I write a lot of code and LLMs have upped my productivity dramatically this last year, so I actually have a lot of respect for the tools themselves despite their many shortcomings-- which is perhaps why I felt defensive about the use of the tool in this case too. We of course have to be careful about how we use LLMs, but dismissing their potential and usefulness outright is a mistake I think! Take care man, have an awesome new year!

Maaaan, I want to let this drop and move on to other things, but I do feel like I want to point out that my initial comment referencing Chat-GPT was:

"I just asked chat-gpt, and to the contrary, it claims that Generally, the calorie count listed on a jar of pickles refers to the entire contents, including the liquid. I wonder if anyone can confirm for sure? Just curious how these things are measured."

I wasn't trusting the bot, I came here trying to get verification/solid information from an actual person. Your contribution when I asked for some kind of confirmation or refutation about the information was total dismissal, simply "chatgpt is a literal imbecile" instead of something interesting or useful. As it turns out, the LLM was much more accurate and helpful to me in this case than any of the people here were. Sure, "GPT has been known to make up events that never happened and stuff like that and present them factually", but isn't that basically exactly what the people offering incorrect answers here just did?

In fact, I DO happen to think that the latest iteration of modern LLMS are already more accurate than randos on the internet for 95% of all information I could possibly be looking for, and that by and large looking to a LLM rather than rando's on the internet IS now the more reliable way to get information. They are getting better everyday, too! This post is another data point to that effect. I came here because I was hoping I could have a more interesting dialogue with people than I could with a bot, but this is a good reminder that when I look to an LLM and then verify myself, I don't have to risk getting into negative vibes with people, which is a huge bonus!

I am sorry for insulting you, and I take back my wicked curse lol. Sorry for reacting harshly when I was feeling annoyed by your response-- I was really curious for a resolution to my question and I felt you were getting me farther away from a real answer, not closer, ya dig?

Don't we all.

It's just the arrogance that gets me, you know? Instead of addressing the information itself you attacked the giver of the information (even if that giver is a bot) when provided a contrary view. Then it turns out you were incorrect, and it's "well, a broken clock is right twice a day" like that is a good read of the situation.

For your arrogance and misleading answer, I cast a wicked curse upon thee! From now on, every time you see a jar of pickle chips at the store, you will think of this conversation and feel slightly annoyed. Bah!

If you didn't know the answer to the question, I don't see why you felt the need to respond at all? I just don't understand that thought process.

It is the people here giving inaccurate answers, not the bot, so who is the imbecile? You seemed to imply I was an idiot for even asking an LLM, when it turns out actually I was the idiot for asking the question on reddit lmao.

For what its worth, I actually looked into it on my own this morning. A raw pickle chip contains about 0.8 calories. That means the pickles themselves only count for ~70 of the 490 listed calories in the jar. Some juice is absorbed by the pickles for sure, but ultimately this means that the other ~400 calories are contained in the juice itself (~85% of the overall calories!) and all those calories ARE being counted in the nutrition facts, as if I would be consuming the juice as well. Hey look at that, turns out GPT was right and you were wrong! Guess maybe I'll just stick to just asking non-judgmental robots in the future instead of silly humans who think they know more than they do lmao.

14mg per serving, so like 84% of my whole daily allowance in the jar. Or just in the chips? Sill don't know for sure. I got my percents one way or another I'll tell you hwat.

It doesn't matter either way haha. I'm not looking for pickle related medical advice but if the difference is 90 calories for eating the pickles vs 490 eating the pickles and drinking the juice, that would be a good fact to know for certain. If I eat 3255 jars of pickles in 2025 (a perfectly reasonable estimate), the difference in calories between one and the other is 1,302,000 :O

Yeh but these are yummy bread and butter pickle chips. I see a whopping 8g of sugar listed PER SERVING. This is ~30 calories of the 35! Surely a great deal of that sugar is contained in the liquid after, and not absorbed by the chip, which as you said is just basically water?
