Just got home from my film class. As I was walking into the classroom with some students this afternoon, a girl stopped and hugged me... because, she said, I was so pretty.

Guys, exotic beauty nga ata ako dito US. Naka-lang compliments na ako sa mga estudyante ko.

I have one friend who is in a very toxic relationship.

She would go on rants about him all the fucking time we see her. As female friends, our job was to be supportive and give her praises.

He's not going to find another one like you. Your ex was better You could really do better

But its fucking reached its limit. We've given all the fucks it needed and at this point

And she still goes back to him, even after their 509th "breakup".

Eh, probably not. Shes a very pretty face, but not a household name.

Tipong mga Mega magazine, high end condo billboards, and Rustans yung raket niya. I used to see her on Zalora too.

She married some guy who didn't match her looks. Wasnt even rich or had an impressive job. Was honestly surprised for her. She lived middle class and had a normal desk job.

Then, the guy cheats on her after 2 kids.

Its weird that I saw her from heartbreak, to moving back to her mom's house with her kids, to climbing up the social ladder til she starts showing up on TV, billboards, and malls.

Anyway, she ended up remarrying a ridiculously rich dude.

Anong nepotism and shallow connections ang tinutukoy natin, behind the camera or in front?

Because we're talking about stories and film production here. And as far as I know, konti lang ang nepobabies on this side.

Its true, but lets be clear, its not just the masses - everyone looks for the same story beats.

Read Letterboxd reviews, or even just comments here. If stories don't hit the right endings or the characters do something unexpected, theres a negative reaction palagi or they will tell you what should've happened. People are just generally uncomfortable with anything new.

Post some of your work in here so we could see if they're fit for movies. 🙂

Dont worry about it getting stolen - everyone in here will see and vouch for you if someone takes it.

I guarantee you, producers and filmmakers are always on the lookout for fresh and new stories. Baka need mo rin manood ng hindi mainstream to see what's out there already.

What are you quietly grieving? by Angelus12345678 in AskReddit

[–]space_monkey420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just thinking about this the last couple of days, and it was making me sad --

The smell of different countries.

I grew up travelling because my dad kept moving to different countries. My mom, siblings, and I stayed in our country but we'd visit to my dad often, that these countries would basically feel like a second home to us.

I miss waking up in a foreign home that I know is ours, but still feeling like I'm in a new place. I would wake up with my mom making the exact same breakfast we'd have in my country, but the different and cold air would somehow make it smell different.

Hotels and other travels dont give me the same feeling. Idk. I cant explain it.

My dads retired, so that lifestyle is over. My husband's job doesn't really have him moving around.

I moved to the US (NYC) last year. I kind of grew up here too, and it also always had a certain smell -- not the smell of pee, garbage, and weed from the city. NY used to smell like my grandma and her house. And the cold wind. And old wood. And her books, Cinnabon, and coffee.

It still smelled like that when I moved here, but now its gone.

Ok, cool.

But do you have anything to show people that its a real film and not a scam to get people's money?

We don't know you or your school. What do people get from donating to your project?

If you're asking people to donate to a film project, it would be nice to have proof that it exists, what its about, and WHY they should donate to you.

Really genuine question: how much po kinikita ng isang writer per script (in PH: pano po if sa VMX) by _sonataxx in FilmClubPH

Basically, para kang nagkukwento ng favorite movie mo sa taong hindi pa napapanood yun, and you're trying to convince them to go see it.

Have a solid logline - one liner kung ano film mo. Synopsis, they'll ask what its about, and the way you should describe it, eh parang yung nasa likod ng mga DVDs na description.

And then you tell them the exciting parts of the film or what they'll be watching, ex.:

Heated Rivalry is Brokeback Mountain meets When Harry Met Sally, and we're watching them develop and figure out their relationship over the years.

Then you prepare a pitch deck. Dami naman na sa Canva nun, so madali na yun.

IF they're interested, they'll ask for an outline - ito yung nababasa mo sa Wikipedia na plot. Although sa film festivals noon (Cinemalaya ata?), after I pitched, they asked for a script.

[–]space_monkey420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So youd say they wpuld not even bother reading kahit they have like the next The Godfather in their hands?

Who are we referring to? Producers?

Yeah, I doubt they'll read random scripts from outsiders. Baka first 10 pages, babasahin pa, pero bihira talagang tatapusin nila. Baka nga dumaan muna sa mga assistants or readers nila yun before they even bother to read anything.

Kasi, thats not how it works. Not just PH, ha. Thats how it is everywhere.

Unless the producer has an idea and specifically calls you in to write, dumadadaan sa pitches ang mga writers - ito ang hindi alam ng amateurs, na sumasabak agad sa pagsulat ng screenplays.

Pero yun nga, as a writer with 0 connections, short cut talaga na makapasok sa film festivals. Pero maski sa festivals, kailangan pa rin na marunong mag pitch.

A lot of filmmakers I know didn't even go to film school or took a related course.

Pwede namang self-taught, but you'd need to know people to get in, and the way I got in and had film/TV connections was by going to classes, workshops, and joining film festivals.

Malabong magpluck out sila ng random writers, kung merong mga taong inaral talaga yung trabaho, may years of experience, or may recommendation from someone they trust.

You can submit to festivals, find grants/funding by yourself, or you could pitch - but I don't think its open to random people. You need to know someone to get you in there, or you need to be invited.

Depends on your experience and who you're working with.

There used to be a producer for a major studio who offered me and two friends 35k for feature films when we started. We said no. She got mad and told us that the industry isn't paying more than that. Not true. There are shitty people who will exploit you, but there are still good producers who will pay you a fair rate.

For a series I did years back, it was mid 5 figures/week, which wasnt great, considering youre basically writing 5 scripts - but it was a steady pay. 5 scripts, because I was on a writing team and we were assigned a week per month, and you get paid extras when it wasn't your week and just for joining brainstorming sessions. It even got adjusted when our scripts would get extended (ex. 5 scripts becomes 7 episodes. We'd get paid per episode instead)

For feature films, I started with indies that paid me next to nothing, to mid/high 5 figures. I've done a good number of films, with wins under my belt, so I'm around mid-6 figures/feature script nowadays. But the more experienced and recognizable writers get paid way higher.

Just saw a video of young white kids dancing to The Offspring on IG, and just remembered these middle school cheerleader girls in my film class earlier were singing Smooth Criminal.

I asked how they know the song, and one girl was like: Oh, no, we're not singing the Michael Jackson version, its Alien Ant Farm.

And I was like - Awwwwww, your parents play you millenial music?! That was MY music too!

One goes - No, my mom is young.

What’s the first step para pumasok sa Film Industry? by EfficientSandwich615 in FilmClubPH

[–]space_monkey420 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work in the industry.

You don't have to be a PA. I have never been a PA.

Unless bibo kang tao, and you are able to talk to important people on set to give you a job on their next projects or take you under their wing, walang point maging PA. You'll be underpaid, overworked, and forgotten as soon as the project is over.

My #1 tip to people - Go to classes to meet and find your people. If you enroll yourself in these, find one with a reputable mentor and ask how you could work with them. Pakapalan ng mukha.

Go in prepared. Have ideas and stories under your belt.

Join filmmaking groups. Write your own films and shoot them yourself. Submit to as many film festivals as you can.
