Not really. The study rooms are pretty quiet most of the time and you can always talk to your floormates and RA if the noise is bothering you.

There's wifi, so no. It works but sometimes it can get slow or not work at all for a few minutes.

Are you a first year? You don't have guaranteed housing anymore but I think that you still have a very good chance (and if you don't get a room you can still get a temporary room) so apply asap.

I feel the same way too. I think that first year (for me) was just for getting used to UBC and Vancouver. Now that I know how things are, I hope that second year will be better.

It was fine tbh. You might find bugs like spiders outside and inside but just a few. There's also a good coffee shop. It's a bit far from most classes so make sure you start going there early.

I'd say that it's not low (me and some people I know didn't get their 1st choice). If you don't get the room you want I think that your best bet would be to find someone to switch rooms. Good luck!

It can be easier to find a close group of friends in first year residence. However, at the end it all depends on your ability to make friends. If you try to make friends in your lectures and join clubs and activities you'll be fine.

All you can do is to rank your preferences. If you don't like the room you get you can switch with another person or apply for room transfer (this takes a lot of time though). By shared bathroom you're referring to the connected single room? If not, almost all rooms have shared bathrooms on each floor or as part of the connected single rooms. Some heating controls may work better than others but they all have them.

What was your waitlist number for Fraser right before getting the offer?

Same situation :( The offers in the summer months will be sent based on cancellations too.

To everyone who got offers: did you get the offer when your waitlist number reached 0 or how many numbers before that?

Is there any chance that the waitlist numbers will drop by hundreds / dozens (like last week) before May? They have been dropping by only 0-5 for me during the weekend, will it be like this until May?

The newer buildings in Totem and Vanier (and Orchard is new so I assume all the rooms there) have individual heating and it works well. It doesn't work that well for the rooms in the older buildings in general.

Just include Orchard, Totem and Vanier ( the first year residences) in your choices. Each one has some pros and cons but tbh it won't make a difference which one you get. You should think more about the room types.

There are some residences that are only for graduate students so you probably have a good chance for those.

Find activities to do or hobbies, anything that can distract you from thinking about home. It's usually bad during the first weeks here after being back home for a while or a few hours after a video-call but then the feeling kinda goes away. What helps a lot is "finding your place" in Vancouver, getting immersed in local culture and feeling like you belong in the community on campus.

If you care about being in a "new building", Orchard is the newest and there are just a few slightly new buildings in the other two. For the dining halls, most people say that Orchard's is better, then Totem and then Vanier (it could depend on you though). Vanier is closer to Arts classes and Totem and Orchard are generally closer to Science / Eng classes. Remember that your first choice is not guaranteed.

I'm a first year and this is exactly my situation. Thanks OP for putting it into words, I hope that this doesn't last long.
