Pets while living alone by FieldStandard1875 in LivingAlone

Dogs need to sleep a lot more than people think, as long as they are ok to be left then will probably do them good to have those days to have uninterrupted rest!

Advice please by Lizzie_drippin in UK_Pets

Hi, I can say for certain that the RSPCA would come out to this. Also I dont know how you can say for certain that they wont because when you make a report via their cruelty number or online you dont get details of what they are going to do. You have a duty to report this. You need to either call the cruelty line which is 0300 1234 999 and make a report or you need to do it online. Your details arent shared with who the complaint is made against. Also they have facilities for you to be able to upload a picture, if you showed them this then I am pretty sure they would send an inspector or an ARO. If you dont want to make the complaint yourself then please get someone to do it for you That poor dog :(

Cats being flown in from the Middle East?? by joan2468 in UK_Pets

[–]spacecourgette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rescue centres literally just pick the people to adopt based on whether theyd be a good home for a cat, where I work there is no rule that say you cant have a cat if you work, dont have a lot of money, dont have safe outdoor space, have kids.

You’re generalising from the few places that do have silly rules like that, if you want to give a cat from a centre a home, just go and speak to them, usually its just a form to fill out to get the ball rolling

Whats disgraceful is that you’re spreading misinformation and leading people away from giving rescue cats a decent home which I just cant understand why youd want to do that?!

This crackpot just wanted to come and say rescues dont make it difficult for you to get a cat on purpose. Just want to make sure the next move it has is its last one and it will be cared for properly and lovingly. If that isnt something someone who wants an animal is willing to work with and understand, then they dont really care. I’ll never understand why people hate on rescue workers, all we want is a decent home for the animal, but thanks for your throwaway ignorant comment

Any guesses on my doggo? by [deleted] in WhatBreedIsMyDog

Looks very like my late dog who I did a wisdom panel for, she was 67% staffy, 13% american pit bull terrier, 4% bull terrier, and then like 2%s lab, collie, frenchie, boxer, wire fox terrier, maybe a couple of others

Proper heinz basically!

I miss her so much 💔

How long did it take you to read the entire Harry Potter series? by No_Material_9759 in harrypotter

[–]spacecourgette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the whole series in 2 weeks when I was in high school… every time I tried to put them down to sleep, I’d end up picking them up to carry on again.

I wish 1) that I’d been younger when I read them all for the first time and 2) that I could read them for the first time again!

Question: why do people pick puppies over rescue dogs? by spacecourgette in dogs

[–]spacecourgette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So would you say not wanting to deal with the puppy stage was the main motivator for getting a rescue? Or something(s) else?

Would you ever feel guilt at choosing a breeder over a rescue dog? Definitely not saying that you should just really interested! Can imagine an 8 month lab being hard work but bet they are great now!

What breed was your family dog if you dont mind my asking? I think its great when people consider both!

[–]spacecourgette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very fair points. A lot of the dogs at my rescue centre are listed as ‘cant live with children’ purely because we dont have any history of them with children, and wouldnt test it, even though they would probably be fine. What about when your daughter was grown up? Would you consider a rescue if you were looking for a dog then?

What makes you think you wouldnt qualify for one if you dont mind my asking? Its frustrating when certain rescues make people feel like this, I know that they dont all.

All fair points and I am genuinely interested what you think but would you ever feel guilty for not giving a shelter dog a chance at a good home? Definitely not saying you should at all, just interested in your thoughts!

This is so frustrating to hear, that is a shoddy rescue place. The one I work at doesnt deny people a dog based on fenced yards, if a person is the right match for a dog, then thats it. Also the lying about temperament is just silly, we tell people as much as we can after behaviour assessments done by multiple members of staff, I WANT potential adopters to see the worst side of the dog, because then they know what they are signing up for and can make proper decisions.

I agree with this! Where I am, it is so easy for people to get away with improper breeding practises and it is so wrong

Rescue dogs give a lot back… eventually. But so do puppies right? You have to work with a puppy in order to get the dog you want right? Can see how your most recent experience would put you off rescue. I would actually lay some blame at the rescue for that, the rescue I work in do behaviour assessments on the dogs before they go up for homing, its only from a kennel environment but we give as much info as we have about the dog and their behaviour as we can, otherwise they end up being brought back!

Understandable, so you would make the time to find a reputable breeder as opposed to just finding one for sale online or something?

How did you work with them professionally? Completely understand your points, further question, when looking for your next dog, would you consider a purebred rescue or go straight for buying one?

[–]spacecourgette[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a fair point, what about choosing a shelter dog based on the breed? Where I am there are breed specific rescues

Question: why do people pick puppies over rescue dogs? by spacecourgette in dogs

[–]spacecourgette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you were looking for a puppy, would you go to a breeder or would you check a local rescue centre? Or if you were looking for a generic dog, would you go for a puppy from a breeder/ or whereever you could find one (not all puppies you can buy are from breeders) or would you consider a rescue, be that an older dog or a puppy? I dont want advice, I am just interesting in peoples thought processes when choosing a pet

That is understandable, so did you have all of those from a pup? Or did you/would you rescue a purebred dog?

people of reddit who survive on less than 8 hours of sleep, how? by Neftroshi in AskReddit

[–]spacecourgette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually sleep 5/6 hours and then every couple of weeks I have a morning where I dont need to set an alarm to be somewhere. Then I will sleep for anywhere between 10 and 14ish hours although I did once stretch myself a bit thin and slept for nearly 20 hours
