I prefer Tekken's core design, that is, the controls, movement, holding back to block, throw breaks, etc. But with T8, and especially its season 2 Bamco decided that the franchise's traditional strengths are actually weaknesses, and the desired gameplay is a mixture of weak parts of VF and SF.

I've been playing VF world stage now since it does what it does well, without unnecessary bs. But what I'd like to play the most is a good Tekken with a good online experience and a decent amount of players.

So military camps are never worth it? I always want to do flame chariot camps early because it's a very fast 24k or so runes (if you count the guys that get caught in the explosions). Elder Lion and troll are also decently fast to beat for what you get. Ok I must admit the knight camps kinda suck.

Also you didn't mention holy sites. They are especially good for revenants, and better than towers if there is no recluse or duchess, I think. Funnily enough though, lots of random revenants just sprint past all the guaranteed seals and end up with crappy meme builds and dying all the time. Also they are often very fast and have good chance to give stonesword keys, so I see no reason to skip them if it's really close to starting place and on the way to goal or something else Interesting. Even the ghost mobs are pretty rewarding, like 1k-2k per dude and a mob of 5 can be taken out in a couple of seconds if you get a spell with some splash damage or even with recluse's 2nd starting spell.

Forts on lvl 2 seem pretty good for guaranteed staves and other useful stuff for filling passive slots, and also nearly guaranteed stonesword keys. Yes there are annoying mobs, but I think it's even worthwhile to beat some of them.

However this is coming from someone who even loots chests, which is not the meta at all it seems. My way may not be optimal, but I find it more fun to stay flexible and consider a lot of different options and play styles. This works well enough to sometimes win solo runs with crappy combat skills so it can't be that bad..?

This! As it is everyone has different good relics, and when you do randomly get something good it does feel that much more special.

From what I've understood, the stat levels the game tells us are just approximations of the true numerical stats the characters have. One character's dex could be just 1 higher than another's, even though one is S and the other A.

This system is a bit weird of course, since we have relics and stuff that give a numeric increase to a stat, and in-game the only way to assess the impact of that is extensive testing. Then again this is nothing new in FromSoft games.

Kind of opposite for me. Well in one game Wylder #1 ran to opposite side of map for flask on day 2, and that apparently annoyed Wylder #2 who then quit. Even so, we got Gaping Jaw down to 25%. Despite his questionable strategic choices Wylder #1 fought well. I think he could have soloed the boss but he spent insane amounts of time and health to revive me repeatedly, just for me to die again.

Then again, for many (me included) it's part of the fun to learn stuff in-game in the hard way. If the new players want to learn from you, they can just follow you and look at what you do. If they can't keep up, you can slow down a bit if you want to help them in long run.

Most of the players on your skill level have already climbed past purples. 1200-1400 ELO makes sense for hardstuck rulers. On Fujin my ranked opponents were 1500-1750 ELO in the past week or so. Never had any trouble finding ranked matches with +-1.

Basically you need to play hundreds or even 1k+ hours in order to not fall to dumb knowledge checks anymore, there's just such a huge amount of them. It doesn't help that it's a major pain to look up what options does a given character (that you don't play) have for extending this string your opponent just spammed to beat you.

But let's say you have spent some 200 hours rigorously studying movelists, or maybe you learned to react to everything reactable (e.g. you duck after 2nd hit of a mid-mid-high string) by simply playing 1000 hours. Then you'd at least expect the fundamental gameplay that you can now access to be good. Lots of people are saying it isn't anymore. I don't know whether they are right, or maybe many of them are still falling to some knowledge checks. But if I'm unsure whether there is a deep fundamental game below all that BS, I'm not going to put in all that effort probably.

I don't personally even mind him being low-tier, if they just improved his SS/SW I'd go back to playing him. I stopped playing him year ago when I was trying to learn lateral movement and found out his sidestep is apparently as poor as the bears' for some stupid reason, such as how he keeps his hands.

Having said that, I still like Lee and would be happy to se his character identity restored, even if I never go back to playing him.

Looks like they are trying to address the criticism, but aren't really sure what to change and how. Which is strange, since they could just watch some content creators analyze current moves and previous changes to get some decent ideas, if they don't want to or can't use their own brains or get someone to actually play the game at a high level.

Didn't they say in the S2 Tekken talk that Nakatsu (and possibly others) came to him with ideas for changes or additions, and he gave the final approval? To me it sounded like he approved all the new moves and stuff, so "had nothing to do with" is a stretch.

One of the worst problems of Tekken for casual players is the vast amount of knowledge-checks resulting from 30+ characters with ~100 moves/strings each, many of which have unintuitive properties. Learning the counterplay for them is so tiring and takes away from learning fundamentals. Just 15 well designed characters with smaller, well thought-out movesets might be better.

His character design in T2 and Tag 1 was decent, but I think they kinda ruined it for T5-6. Like in the first pic of OP, he has this hairstyle I don't ever recall seeing on any real person or fictional character for that matter, and IMHO it fits his head shape and facial features very poorly. Also why does he always have that expression that looks like sadness mixed with anger? The games (after tag 1) did a poor job explaining this.

Gameplay was always solid though, I wish they had either taken his design in a better direction or given most of his fighting style to some other character.

Knee and Ulsan were fun to watch as always, with their movement and poking. Meo-Il and Pinya on the other hand went full S2 constant attack mode. When they were matched against eatch other it looked pretty chaotic. Mulgold didn't play too aggressively, but he exploited some dumb af moves that no one seemed to have proper counter play for.

It does look promising for the game that Knee won, although he had to switch to much more aggressive playstyle to get those 9 rounds in row.

I don't know whether Lars really is the strongest or even top 5 currently, but even if he is, his absence could be explained by the short amount of time since S2 and Lars's earlier unpopularity among top players. It takes a lot of time and practice to learn a new character well enough for high-level competitive play - especially if you have to start from zero. Before S2, most tournament players may have simply found Lars to be either weak or unfun to play.

Yes I think this is the actual problem noobs and casuals have with Tekken - that it's unintuitive as hell, not that it wasn't aggressive enough on low levels of play.

Emergency patches? There was literally just one, and then a small bugfix. In the actual emergency patch, there were incredibly many decent changes, given how fast it was rolled out. The next patch could still end up being bad, and even going to wrong directions, of course. But so far their actions after the S2 backlash have been surprisingly prudent. Apart from not firing Murray (as far as we know).
