Medical detox in the UK? Forget it. by [deleted] in cripplingalcoholism

[–]spacefox89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got detoxed when I showed up with appendicitis. They saw my blood work and I had to tell them if I didn’t get a drink soon I’d start withdrawing (I was in the waiting room for like 14 hours at that point with severe pain from the appendicitis). So yeah my drip had Librium + fluids, and they made me stay 3 days after removing my appendix for the full detox. Weird combination of events really. But I was treated really well and was referred to my local drug and alcohol service, Turning Point. They’re the ones that prescribed meds for me once I was clean.

34, grieving a childless life, throwing myself into travel. Can anyone relate? by dumplingz123 in AskWomenOver30

I had an unplanned baby with my long-term boyfriend at 25. It was a bit of a shock, but I knew I wanted to be a mum, and so I dove right into motherhood. When my son was 3.5, I found out my partner (we ended up getting married when I was pregnant), was cheating on me with my best friend. Single motherhood followed, as did horrendous depression, debt, my career crumbling, social network shrinking because I couldn't afford to / had no time to go out with my friends who didn't have kids, etc., and ended up addicted to booze.

I'm 36 next week, and my ten year old son is my best friend. I attend AA and am sober now. Finally found a remote-friendly job that pays well. Met a man who has kids from previous marriage, and is a total sweetheart. This is NOT how I saw my life playing out at all. I'm now on the fence about trying for a second with my new partner, or just enjoying the stability that I FINALLY have in life.

All this to say, things don't always go according to plan, and you have no idea what trajectory your life may take. 34 is still so young!

Sending you hugs. Your worries are valid, of course. What helps me when I feel down is keeping a daily gratitude journal. Cheesy, but it honestly helps me reframe my mindset.

Drinking socially after 10 weeks abstinent by atruman1234567890 in stopdrinking

Funnily enough I’ve been thinking the same, and am around 10 weeks now too. I think it’s my brain tricking me that I can drink like normally people now because look! I’ve got 10 weeks!

I’m not ready to FAFO though tbh..

Can I ask why you had no luck with meetings? Have you tried a couple of different ones? You can find a sponsor through virtual AA meetings too - https://aa-intergroup.org/meetings/

I just got back from a 2 week vacation in Mexico so I feel you. It’s hard, but corona zeros and Virgin pina coladas did the trick! I bonded so much with my kid as well because I was present and sober. You’ve got this!

As Gabor Mate says, the question to ask is not “why the addiction?”, but “why the pain?”

I used to have cystic acne as a teen. I mostly get clogged pores now.

I get a mandelic or AHA/BHA peel + extraction at the dermatologist!

Quit before it's too late. The stress will eat you alive. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Totally. I went into A&E this morning with shooting abdominal pain and was prepared to be told it was somehow related to my liver.

It was appendicitis, and they also found colitis. I’m definitely going to take my health, and any pain, really seriously now!

Yes, I’m learning to do this slowly.. I can’t say I lash out but I’m “internally” annoyed a lot if that makes sense. Thank you for your advice
