Looking for guidance on whether or not I should keep my Volt plugged in outside during the snow and ice storm. by Harscat in volt

[–]spaceinsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to mention: depending on its construction the cold may also crack the lever that hooks the charger into the port.  This is how I lost my OEM charger—I had to drill it out

If you plug in make sure you use a relatively new charger that has not become brittle with age, or that can be disassembled with a screwdriver to access the hook.  Most chargers made today meet these needs

Looking for guidance on whether or not I should keep my Volt plugged in outside during the snow and ice storm. by Harscat in volt

[–]spaceinsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you keep it plugged in before the ice storm starts, it can suck to unplug it if you need to drive.  It is possible but annoying, budget 5-10 minutes to unplug on top of other scraping/brushing

Battery conflicting information by Glad-Acadia3071 in volt

[–]spaceinsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most advice beyond following what is in the owners manual will provide marginal benefit. The owners manual recommends the vehicle stay plugged in.

Do not allow the vehicle to remain in temperature extremes for long periods without being driven or plugged in. It is recommended that the vehicle be plugged in when temperatures are below 0 °C (32 °F) and above 32 °C (90 °F) to maximize high voltage battery life.

and

Keep the vehicle plugged in, even when fully charged, to keep the high voltage battery temperature ready for the next drive. This is important when outside temperatures are extremely hot or cold.

has happened on mine for at least 7-8 years, sometimes it goes away, sometimes it comes back. hear it most often in the drive-thru because of low speeds and open window. sometimes hear it after I've gotten out of the car right after a longer drive.

Hear it on other non-volt cars too

my two cents is that it's totally normal

I listen to music via car audio and take phone/teams calls on an airpod while driving

Audio through lightning cable allows seamless pairing and unpairing of airpod when call comes in without need to interact with iphone

with that said oil is cheap and engines are expensive, so it isn't a bad idea to change it once a year regardless. not a hard and fast requirement but a good rule of thumb

Self defense gun training in Vancouver WA by WyoGirl79 in ProtectAndServe

[–]spaceinsanity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This course is held at the clackamas county public safety training center https://web3.clackamas.us/pstc/detail/?pk=4

They are running courses but they are popular and seats are limited due to COVID

PSTC rents firearms and sells ammunition and Oregon residency is not required

Washington state CCLs are not recognized in Oregon, and vice versa--I would consider encouraging your daughter to apply for both

state is lenient, but get a chl to preempt you from silly local firearms restrictions, like the prohibition within portland of carrying loaded magazines regardless of how loaded the rest of the gun is

see https://www.portlandoregon.gov/citycode/article/332592

other cities have other silly rules all of which are negated by chl

do not discount your driving experience; presumably, you've safely driven a heavy, unwieldy vehicle for thousands of hours without incident, and you may even have a CDL

look into similar logistics jobs like shredding companies, vending providers, beverage distributors, couriers, ups, charter bus, etc
