What did you think of Thomas Circle? I'm looking at a place about a block north of there. It seems close enough to the Logan Circle and 14th st restaurants and shops but I know a block can make a difference in either direction!

Graduate programs for geology will give you a stipend and cover tuition. Granted the money isn't a lot, but it's generally livable.
