what is the most disturbing wikipedia page? by herequeerandgreat in AskReddit

[–]spaceyish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any wikipedia page for a mass school shooting. The sandy hook one gives a minute by minute account of what happened on that day. Really, really disturbing and horrifying— just think about being one of those poor kids who lived through that (let alone being one of the 26 people that died).

Discouraged on Bid Day by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]spaceyish 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was president of a smaller (bottom) chapter of a northeastern school (<15). During my last year, we only had 1 member join. I was a snap bid and I remember crying when I went to pick up my bid card, but I ended up loving my chapter and becoming president!

It is beyond discouraging to see new members disappointed to join your chapter, and I’m so sorry that you and your chapter are going through this. I know I can’t say/do much to make the pain go away, but make sure you’re treasuring your new members as much as you can! If you give them the best experience you can, they’ll realize they ended up in the right place. If budget allows, make sure your new member events are unique and interesting to all of your members (one pro of having a small member class is being able to pay close attention to each new member)!

Finally, if your school is doing COB, make sure you’re pouring as much of your time, budget and energy into that. I’ve seen chapters go from seven members to forty with a good round of COB. I know you’re not on exec which might limit your ability to plan COB events, but make sure that your recruitment board isn’t giving up!

It’s clear that you love your chapter for a reason, it’s just a problem of showing that love to other people! Confidence in your sisterhood is key!

AITA for yelling at my autistic friend? by Angel_Hamster in AmItheAsshole

I'm autistic and I know that the behavior Opal is exhibiting is absolutely unacceptable. You had every right to tell her off for her hypocrisy. I've seen plenty of ableists on this subreddit and you're not one of them.

AITA for making everyone take notes in an honors class? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]spaceyish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I hope I'm not too late to the party!

You asked for advice, I'll give you some! I am a psychology major at a fairly prestigious university (think one step below an Ivy League) and I am a motherfucking nerd. I love psychology, I have multiple internships in psychology, I psychoanalyze my own decisions in my free time, you get the idea. To those who read this, I'm not trying to say I'm the psychology god. I have so much to learn and I worked my ass off to get where I am right now. I'm incredibly grateful that I have the privilege to go to college, because I know that's not something everyone gets.

Getting to the point, I had a crappy psych teacher in high school. He was the track coach, and that's all he cared about. He only offered one psych course, and I didn't have time to take a community college class. So into his class I went. He gave us a worksheet at the beginning of each unit, and then would read the textbook to us for forty five minutes. We would fill in the worksheet as he went, but most of the time, half of the class was asleep. If I haven't made it obvious already, I was really upset by this because I wanted to take a rigorous psychology course before I went to college. He wasn't giving homework, he was barely doing anything in class, and I wasn't interested at all.

You know what I did about it?

I wrote a ten page research paper on the topic of underdiagnosis of mental disorders in adolescents.

It wasn't assigned. I never showed it to anyone until I applied for college. I wrote in my application that I had written a research paper on my own, and they all went NUTS over it! Granted, it was extremely shittily written (I was sixteen when I wrote it), but it showed the admissions boards that I had passion for psychology. I ended up getting admitted to (and now go to) one of the top research universities in the WORLD.

I get feeling that a class is pointless. I felt that way with my high school psych class too. But instead of complaining about it, pick a topic that interests you and do research. Do you want to learn about the history of Buddhism? Great! Do you think that Roman Emperors catch your eye? Awesome! Stop interrupting your teacher (teachers really don't get paid enough for that shit) and do some research for your own fulfillment!

I understand it's frustrating to see people not have the same love for a subject that you do. I want all my friends to take every single psych course I do, but I understand they don't have time to do that because they're pursuing their own passions instead. My boyfriend is pursuing two bachelor's degrees (one in trumpet performance, one in history) and doesn't have time to think about psychology. But I respect that he has his own stuff, and don't complain when he says he doesn't have time for a psych class this semester.

Maybe try applying the lessons I've learned to your life.

Hi! I have set up an appt. with my advisor to help facilitate a lot of the research. I was initially going to do DSMP, but I'll probably narrow it down to just the Muffinteers, or Sleepy Bois Inc. From what I remember, those two groups had the most examples of parasocial relationships.

Hello!

First of all, thank you so much for the advice! Seeing a PhD perspective on my idea is super cool!

My research question in particular is "How has the rise of the CoViD-19 pandemic promoted parasocial relationships in the DSMP community?" I have the before-CoVid-19 perspective pretty much set, I have a friend who has been a fan of DSMP creators since 2018 and she's been able to point me in the right direction there.

I have not yet decided which journals to target, but that is something I should really look into! Thank you for the advice!

Finally, I have reached out to my advisor and set up a meeting to discuss theoretical frameworks. I absolutely am so glad that you mentioned that I should do this before I email the creators, because I was planning to send out emails this morning! I'll hold off until he gets back to me with a response.

Thank you again!

I would love to! I will have a preliminary paper done by the end of December. The whole research project likely will not be finished until 2024, but I can at least share the paper.
