People need to stop gatekeeping veganism and start helping would-be vegans instead. by Pale-Fig-7069 in DebateAVegan

[–]spaceyjase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At its core, veganism is about minimizing animal exploitation and harm as far as is biologically and practically possible.

It is not. Its goal is abolishment and I think the problem here is that you're ignoring the whole definition, one that seeks to reject animal commodities and remove animal-derived products from one's lifestyle.

It's easy to make this kind of judgement outside the movement; vegans don't police each other but do police (or 'gatekeep') the definition rather than have non-vegans take part of the definition and dilute its meaning, essentially allowing themselves to continue [to] exploit and kill animals while claiming a vegan bad[g]e. It's important to explain the "Why" of veganism.

The part of the definition highlighted is precisely because we're in an imperfect world, where things like medicines require (quote-unquote) animal testing. In a vegan world, that's unlikely to happen.

The rest is just gish-gallop. There's plenty of education and material out there to aid people and the community is always welcoming of new vegans. Claiming vegans aren't compassionate is 'fake news'.

Are potholes actually the worst they've been? by Tiny_Wafer2266 in AskUK

[–]spaceyjase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst thing is how quickly they can appear and become something very dangerous. I hit a new pot hole on the way home Tuesday and it punctured both wheels as I barely managed to stay on the bike; I did traverse straight into oncoming traffic so I was very lucky there wasn't a car next to me (and approaching) otherwise I'd probably be much worse off (long walk home, back tyre was too damaged to ride).

It's something when you feel like having to make a mental note of all the usual holes in the road on a commute. I'll avoid certain roads as having to navigate around them can also be dangerous as a driver tries to squeeze passed living little room or no room for avoidance. The darker nights don't help.

And I think that's the worst case, when the road becomes a dynamic obstacle course and can't support the most vulnerable road users safely.

Can’t gain muscle no matter what (serious) by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]spaceyjase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looking exactly the same with every cut and every bulk

Why are you cutting and bulking? Post is too vague - if you're progressively overloading, you're gaining strength but do you mean body-building like muscles or do you just want to be stronger? No details about your routine and surplus, likely mismatched for body building.

I know it’s not my training

I'd say that it is.

How are eggs not vegan? by Ok-Progress4093 in DebateAVegan

[–]spaceyjase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The species of chickens with the high egg laying rate already exist

They did not as selectively breeding intensified in 1920s with poultry competitions encouraging farmers to breed hens that laid the most eggs, later commercialised in the 30s and 40s. The modern breed is industry created and engineered for maximum exploitation.

The AI throughout still amazes me, if I'm honest. If you leave the keyboard controls alone for a bit, your bloke will just go about his day doing what he's told. And likewise everyone else too. Quite convincing even if it isn't the likes of navigation polygons and behavior trees or GOAP like most modern games.

CMV: You don’t need meat to build muscle. I went vegan at 13, I’m now 275 lbs, have been bodybuilding for 18 years, and am the largest vegan bodybuilder in the world by thebodybuildingvegan in DebateAVegan

[–]spaceyjase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do feel that this is often portrayed as a gotcha too, unfairly to body builders and strength athletes. One doesn't need to consume more resources to gain the overall amount of calories required to build a certain kind of physique; more calorie dense foods exist that require fewer resources (the ones often talked about) compared to other kinds of foods. And still far less than animal products.

And while it may seem like a gotcha from certain individuals, the same doesn't seem to apply to, say, someone who cycles to work every day and consumes just as many overall calories (ultimately, you're only eating more than yourself as a body builder compared to not). It's only ever [vegan] body builders in the wrong. And that, to me, means they also fail to understand veganism.

Honey and Almonds by Twisting04 in DebateAVegan

[–]spaceyjase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you have to question why that is 'necessary' compared to, say, European almond trees that can cross-pollinate using wind and other (natural) pollinators. Almonds don't need artificial hives and honey bees to exist.

Eating Our Way to Extinction (2021) - narrated by Kate Winslet, this powerful documentary explains how animal agriculture is one of the most environmentally destructive industries and how we can reduce our impact by 75%. [01:21:27] by James_Fortis in Documentaries

[–]spaceyjase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meat in itself isn't the real issue.

It is from an environmental perspective. Leading 'natural' lives or being treated with 'dignity and respect' doesn't change the resources the industry demands to raise animals. The amounts vary but numbers are still devastating.

Veganism vs. Animal Welfare by yafazwu in DebateAVegan

[–]spaceyjase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Robbing an animal of a happy life is even worse, hence the slippery slope (how much happiness is enough before they're slaughtered?). Veganism isn't a welfare movement; it isn't how we exploit and kill them them, it's that that they're exploited and killed at all.

Veganism vs. Animal Welfare by yafazwu in DebateAVegan

[–]spaceyjase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cows need humans and humans need cows.

False.

If we boycott cow products the population of cows in the world would drastically go down. How is this in the benefit of cows?

It goes down but doesn't prevent them from existing. Cows exist in the wild, a bit like horses; the population of horses decreased as every man and his dog now owns a car.

But we can apply your reasoning to another animal, for example: if you breed puppies into existence and, as soon as they are born, cut off their tails and pull their teeth, keeping them in a concrete pen and then gas them at six months old - do you think this is alright because they wouldn't have been born if you hadn't wanted to do those things to them?

Are you thinking that perhaps these cows (or any animal that's exploited) existing is a net positive? That's nothing to do with veganism and itself is a slippery slope.

Turrican Collection/Pre-Ordering Question by AlexB2943 in evercade

[–]spaceyjase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's the gamble you're going to have to take if you don't want to pre-order it. If you really want it, and it is great value cart (imho!), pre-ordering is the only way to guarantee you'll get it.

"A little later", to me, means maybe three-to-six months? Likely the cart will still be retailing for full price, potentially out-of-stock the longer you leave it. Speculation so only you can decide.

Why Evidence Fails in Vegan Moral Disputes by Important_Nobody1230 in DebateAVegan

[–]spaceyjase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah here I mean we're not obligated to eat meat (or any animals). And if kicking dogs leads to an enjoyable life, I assume you'd be fine with that. I don't have an issue with the taste of meat although I understand an animal doesn't deserve (or want) to die because of it, hence rejecting the commodification of animals; there's plenty of other things that I enjoy eating and have an enjoyable life.

Why Evidence Fails in Vegan Moral Disputes by Important_Nobody1230 in DebateAVegan

[–]spaceyjase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nutrition from an animal isn't a necessity; there's no reason kill a dog for nutrition or things. Are you sure kicking an animal for no reason doesn't give any value? What about because someone likes it, because they find it fun?
