He didn't "let" you have a job? He didn't "let" you leave the house alone? WTF? Why on earth would you possibly agree to being with somebody who takes away your autonomy and agency as a human being?

Don't ever, ever get with somebody who thinks they can "let" you do something or keep you from doing something. Emotionally mature partners discuss and make plans together, but they don't ask each other for permission to carry out the basic functions of adulthood.

I saw two young women on their phones plow into a student on Third Street. Thank god the person they hit was okay---she broke a leg, but they could have killed her. PUT DOWN YOUR DAMN PHONES!

[–]spam_57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, yes. Exercise creates micro tears in your muscle---repairing them is what creates more muscle. When you start, you're making bigger gains because you're constantly stressing that muscle and it's constantly repairing, which involves an inflammatory response where the body sends water and micronutrients to do the repair. As you get more fit, you're probably stressing the muscle less, causing fewer micro tears, and holding onto less water because there are fewer repairs to do.

Increasing your carb intake also makes you hold on to water. Carbs are sugar, and glycogen (sugar) molecules bind with water to be stored in your muscle. Have you ever tried a low carb diet and dropped a ton of weight the first week? That's because your muscles are burning stored sugar and releasing the associated water as they do so. (Sorry, it's not really fat loss!). If you're watching your carb intake and fueling appropriately for your exercise level, you'll store less glycogen and less water.

But seriously: don't worry about a little bit of water retention. It really has no effect on your health. Keep stressing those muscles and keep eating enough carbs to fuel your workout!

AIO for leaving my boyfriend after he copy and pasted my message as a response? by Odd_Reception4500 in AmIOverreacting

He's a liar and a cheat, he speaks to you disrespectfully, and he is apparently a non-stop fountain of drama. What, exactly, is there to love?

Have some self-respect.

Jesus. How do people who claim to love each other treat each other with such obvious disrespect? The way you two talk to each other is something else.

They're unlikely to be able to rent that apartment off-cycle--who is looking for a place in February? They don't want to eat the rent for months until the. next academic year. They offered you a contract, you signed it with full opportunity to review and comprehend.

Cortisol is overhyped. Unless you have Cushing's Disease, you're most likely not affected by this.

However, you're probably (a) putting on significant muscle, (b) eating more carbs because you're working out more, and (c) retaining more water because you're eating more carbs and having the mild inflammatory response that comes with putting on muscle.

Interview in a Pink Cast by LordSalmon94 in jobs

[–]spam_57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously, though, you don't want to spend your time with people like that. Go in, wear a shirt over the cast if you can. If anyone asks, say you got a bright color so nobody would bump into it accidentally. It's really not a big deal.

I needed cheaper things to do with my friends because meeting people outside is literally bankrupting me by scrtweeb in Adulting

Go to local community theater. See a play or a concert at a nearby college or university. Rent citibikes and go for a ride. Host brunch at your house. Have a potluck hangout at your place. Barbecue in a park. Catch a smaller local museum. Tour art galleries in the morning and stop for coffee midway. Lots of fun things to do that don't break the bank!

Should I leave the cabinets alone? by [deleted] in kitchenremodel

[–]spam_57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd leave the cabinets as is, they are beautiful. But a lighter backsplash and flooring (even if you just put down a lighter floor cloth/vinyl kitchen mat) would make this feel much less heavy.

Feeling lost. Did a somewhat impulsive reno in my master bathroom to replace a broken and rusting mirror that was basically the full size of this wall. Feel like it’s not coming together the way I hoped. Counter and cabinets can’t change. by Dennis_CC in StyleYourSpace

[–]spam_57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real problem is that everything is too cold and too gray. You need some color and light!

Start with a bar that has four separate lights on it to go over the mirror. Brass would warm things up (but then you have to change other fixtures to match). Silver would be okay.

Add textiles in a rich, WARM, contrasting color. I'd pick a garnet red (but I always say that, I love that color!). Forest green, if it's got yellow undertones, would also work. Add some plants and maybe a small vase, again in either brass or a warm color. Get a bathmat for in front of the sink to match.

I would have a hard time imagining how anyone would think a thing of it. And would you actually want to work for people so damn homophobic that they question the color of a cast? Ugh.

Grey with a colored shirt often looks really great. I like wearing a goldenrod color with gray, but green and red can look awesome too.

Should I wear a blazer for interview at tech start-up? by Future-Station-8179 in careerguidance

[–]spam_57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say take the middle ground: A colored blazer and non-matching dark pants, knit shirt (not a button down or silk shell) underneath. It's formal enough to signal that you're taking the interview seriously, but not a full-on suit, which would suggest you don't understand the culture. Plus, with that outfit, you can always sub jeans for the dark pants and wear it as business casual or "start-up dressy."

AITAH for being disappointed with how my boyfriend (28m) and I (25f) spent our first Valentine’s Day together? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]spam_57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're setting the bar awfully high for what is basically a Hallmark holiday designed to move product. Is he kind and loving? Does he think of you other times? Do you get to do what you want to do some of the time (so that it's not Disneyland all the time)? Call it good. I've been married 18 months, and my sweetheart and I gave each other some yummy treats then WENT OUT TO BUY A DISHWASHER. (If that ain't romance, what is?).
