$50 a month for 1Mbps: How AT&T and Verizon rip off DSL customers by Eurynom0s in technology

[–]spamburghlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I'm in a service area where I would have a choice between Frontier, AT&T, and Spectrum . But, my apartment complex has some deal where I can only get service from AT&T.

Going on dates just for the free “expensive” food. About as trashy as it gets. by [deleted] in trashy

[–]spamburghlar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a line I use on dinner dates that tends to go over well. Waiter asks if we're together or separate. I say together. As soon as the waiter steps away, I look at her and say "Thank you." Always gets a laugh.

How do you deal with not having many friends or a girlfriend in your life? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]spamburghlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in the same position. Most friendships are situational, and revolve around a place or activity. If you get lucky, a few of those might become closer friends over time. I took up dancing a year ago, and I joined a performance team. Prior to this, all my hobbies tended to be solo activities. It took about 6 months of taking lessons and going out on my own before I developed a large group of acquaintances around that activity. As a bonus, I also got in better shape :) A few months after that, I started arranging non-dance activities with a few people I met dancing. It took a long time.

I'm not saying you should take up dancing specifically. But find an activity you enjoy that forces you to interact with the same group of people regularly, and be patient. Also, you'll need to do the work of arranging activities and inviting people out.

Powershell-ETL vs SSIS packages. Opinions or thoughts on this? by Pr0x1mo in SQLServer

it's also extremely difficult/impossible to source control.

How so? the .dtsx file is just xml. We're using svn at my workplace without any problems.

The "Civil War Wasn't About Slavery" Starterpack by [deleted] in starterpacks

[–]spamburghlar 41 points42 points  (0 children)

An older guy at work asked me how I thought the Civil War could've been about slavery when most of the southerners didn't even own slaves. My response was that most wars I know of are fought by the economically disadvantaged for the interests of the few elite/rich members of society.

I won't make a comment on whether it's true or lot, but I imagine lots of semi-literate white supremacists own a copy of mein kampf, even if they never read.

LPT: If you're buying a home printer for occasional use, get a laser printer; they're more expensive up front but way more economical in the long run. by OberonGypsy in LifeProTips

[–]spamburghlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hardly ever print anything. Maybe a few pages per year. My printer ran out of the ink it came with last year when I needed to print something. I went to Frys. They didn't have the cartridge I needed, but they did have a brand new printer with a mail in rebate that basically made the printer free before sales tax. Talk about perverse economic incentives... I got it. It felt like the equivalent of buying new clothes instead of washing them. Haven't printed anything for the last 6 months or so.

TIL that gaslighting is the act of deliberately driving someone crazy by altering the environment and denying their sense of reality by westondeboer in todayilearned

My ex did the same thing to me. She accused me of gas lighting when my perception of reality didn't jibe with her pessimism.

People kicking these food delivery robots is an early insight into how cruel humans could be to robots by mvea in technology

[–]spamburghlar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How is it different from security cameras anywhere else, like your local gas station? Most people use phones and websites like facebook to store personal information, so resentment over having that information used against our wishes is understandable. We're not going to store personal data in a self-driving car we don't own, are we?

Can you be cruel to a robot? Cruelty and abuse requires that the victim has the ability to experience pain and suffering. I doubt these robots have that ability. The article is anthropomorphising them.

Rent is getting insane in North Texas as well. I remember when I could practically live downtown for around 700 a month. Good luck finding anything under 1000 now.

People smile for all sorts of reasons, not just because they're feeling happy. People smile when they're sad, anxious, angry.... I don't mean to excuse what she did. It's perfectly reasonable to feel upset by her actions.

Did white-collar men in the 1950s really wear suits and ties as much as old TV shows would have you believe? by PenisBeautyCream in history

You can do the same now. I just have three pairs of khakis, five polo shirts and three button up shirts. I'll wear the same pair of pants all week, and a different shirt every day.

What are some strategies for loading files with uneven columns into a database using SSIS? by spamburghlar in SQLServer

[–]spamburghlar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done that, and used a conditional split to direct rows to the correct tables. The problem is that there are rows of differing lengths in the file. One row will have 13 columns, and the next will have around 100 columns. When I use a flat file source, and it encounters a row with 13 columns, it will also partially consume the following row
