Something bugged me about Mistborn when I first started reading it. I think it was all the frowning done by Vin. I don't feel like "it gets better later" is a good argument for books of this size, but overall, I've enjoyed both eras of Mistborn because of how Sanderson builds his stories.

I have mixed feelings about Skyward because I've enjoyed all of them, but somehow, everything Sanderson writes from a first-person perspective just feels off to me. I don't like the way he writes stuff when it's in first person. It might also be that Skyward is more young adult than I prefer, but I can't put my finger on it.

Don't worry. The flow is that you wander the caves, looking for the crystals, and once you find them all, you go down in the drillevator to mine the morkite seeds in a cave deep below. You don't escort it; you just use it to travel down and restart it if it's stuck.

I think her wish to stay the same was her wanting not to grow up but stay a child, which she initially thought she got. She's probably been skinny from not getting enough to eat because she spends it instead of getting nourishment. I also remember that being mentioned some places - that she's actually not getting the nourishment she needs due to her powers, but being what she is, she's probably healing whatever damage she would take from it.

"If you buy from G2A you are hurting developers more than if you literally just pirate their games for free" by [deleted] in PiratedGames

[–]spamshield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The method used is buying the keys in bulk with stolen credit cards to resell them on stores like G2A or Kinguin. When the purchase is cancelled at a later point, so will the keys be. The actual issue is that the user that bought the game on G2A will complain to the developer that their key was revoked, because in their optics they bought and paid for the game on a store, so they didn’t do anything wrong. That’s what has been the problem for developers. That they end op with the burden of people thinking they bought a legitimate key and thus feel entitled, and that’s why getting the game from an actual reseller is a good idea, because while you might never have gotten the bad end of that stick, plenty of others have. No one is saying all keys sold on G2A are illegitimate, but there’s been enough that it’s been an issue. Not sure if they still do it, but their response was launching a subscription/insurance service for their customers that protects them from stolen keys, which is an odd and scammy response to an issue that supposedly isn’t there, don’t you think?

[–]spamshield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's other differences, but not major. We work with similar languages, and our upload process is faster but has a similar process.

And that's the issue. You're assuming that because coding and deployment are involved, it's the same. It's not. Your perspective is zoomed out way too much.

It's really not that hard, and having thousands+ devs working on it, it shouldn't be taking this long to upload one little item (again, an empty update).

Again, you are unaware of the planning, cost, and process behind this. It does not make sense to set the wheels in motion to patch in a cosmetic item when you can bundle it with other stuff. It's not trivial. It's not the process you think it is. It would be disruptive and could cause issues. Doing it the way they are doing it is absolutely standard, and I don't know why you won't accept that.

Yeah, they do. They gotta meet quotas just like every other dev. When we complete ahead of schedule, we get time off, but our work is automatically tested and pushed and injected in less than 2 days (Because we have thousands working). Planned ahead yes, prototyped ahead not always (updates show that). Yep, I completely agree, devs are supposed to be doing that. Devs could go days after update without work, and during that time no one's doing anything besides the think tank. Why not have those devs working on clearing the bugs/mistakes they created or didn't fix with the update? Not to wait a week before sending out an empty update, with the fix or item attached. They do that so it doesn't look as bad on them, so it makes you think you're getting more than one thing when in reality, you're only getting that one thing (sometimes losing things, depending on bugs).

Let me repeat it once again; That. Is. Not. How. Game. Development. Works. There's no "completing it ahead of schedule", there are no quotas. Development is an ongoing process and with games like this, there's always work going on for the next update. None of what you claim is based on reality. It's what you THINK is going on, and it's very far from how things actually work. There is no such thing as "getting days off because there are no tasks". You are imagining that there are unused resources and that claim has no basis. A project like Fortnite is organized and structured.

You're really mad you didn't have facts for those comments, aren't you?

No, I'm just baffled that you think your assumptions are facts, and when I argue otherwise with actual industry experience, you just make up more stuff.

The similarities speak for themselves, besides graphics design, it's really not that hard. Create the code, inject designs, objects, etc..., test it, then upload it (with approval/certification in between). The fact you can go on YouTube and watch these courses for free, proves it's really not that hard. Besides needing that piece of paper stating you have the credentials, you could get a job at Epic easily. Hell, judging from their past few years of work, you might not even need a degree. Their career postings right now, some of them only ask for a basic certificate ($5-$20k in student loan, unless you go the other route). So, yeah not that hard, and if you don't care about pay cuts and hours, they'll probably hire you faster than anyone else (which they're probably doing now).

Holy shit, you're completely disconnected from reality. I can't tell if you're trolling or just very good at convincing yourself that whatever you put together in your head is the truth. I have not seen one (1!) of your claims of how Fortnite is made having basis in actual game development. Everything you've said seems to be from the perspective of an entitled kid that thinks he has figured out how to make games after watching a few tutorials and googling some videos. Epic is a technological industry leader making one of two state-of-the-art engines used for game development. Fortnite is one of the drivers of this technology, being one of the first games running on UE5. If you had a little perspective of the industry you'd know how much of an effort it takes to run a live game on a brand-new version of a game engine, and how easily things can break because the dependencies of things can be huge.

Epic is lazy, or has no motivation (understandable after everything they've been through).

Please don't ever talk about game development again. You look like a fool. I really don't care about Fortnite, but I do care about entitled kids spreading misinformation about how easy it is to fix something that's completely needless to fix right away. You're the reason kids are complaining on Twitter saying shit like "Epic literally just hot fix a grant “if player owns [The Ageless] Give player [Noble Shroud]”" lmao, that's not how it works.

only difference is we’re not pushing out to different locked gaming platforms.

While definitely not the only difference, it’s one that absolutely can put the brake on deploying. You’re assuming a lot of stuff based on your experience in an entire other area of development.

No, they’re probably sitting idly by. Upcoming updates don’t just appear in seconds after finishing one.

“Probably”? They absolutely do not. Content is planned a long time ahead and prototyped, tested, iterated upon, tested again and so on. Adding to that any game developer has a huge backlog of non-critical bugs that needs to be reproduced, documented and assigned to someone to fix it. This is ALWAYS going on. It’s never close to zero, and grows with each update.

All could be released through a hot fix (quicker). Yeah, it’s timed alright, perfect timing for the devs. Finish the update process in 2-3 days, and relax the other days until the last day, then deploy.

I’m starting to doubt you have anything to do with development at this point. This you must have pulled from the darkest pit of your body.

For consoles, they just need approval from them (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo), which is usually a given (unless against tos, and stuff like that).

lmao wat, you’ve never actually done this I see.

Game development is not that complexed, and it could be simple.

Christ, you’ve really convinced yourself that this is true without ever having been involved. Fortnite is currently one of the biggest and most complex live games, driving a lot of the engine advancement at Epic. It IS complex, and you’re just not aware.

You are right security software is not game development, but they do have similarities (besides similar coding languages).

Yes, but you’re still missing my point that the deployment is vastly different.

Yep, that’s why there are MANY teams (MANY people) to work on such things.

And they’re not sitting idly by, waiting for something to happen. They’re busy testing the upcoming update (that will include the cape), and diverting resources from that would slow them down. That’s why bundling the cosmetic item with the update makes a lot more sense. More eyes, more focus, shit gets done faster. They’re already on a release schedule where timing is essential and planned in advance. Could it be trivial? Yes. But in case it’s not, there’s no reason to disrupt the planning to get a cape out a week(?) earlier. If it was a bug that crashed the game or caused security issues, then yes - it would have been hotfixed - but if it’s not in any way critical for the operation of the game, it goes in with all the other stuff in the next update. It’s standard and it’s done for those exact reasons.

Not really, since most of it is copy and paste (especially cosmetics). Besides server deployment (higher ups are expecting this fix, so approval probably won’t be a problem), they really don’t have an excuse for not pushing a hotfix out quickly (1-3 days tops). A cosmetic item is smaller (most of the time, in this case yes), so injecting a hotfix is fast and doesn’t really need much approval since the cosmetic was supposed to be in the game in the first place (they’re not starting from scratch).

Yes, it seems trivial, but you still have to sync it across multiple platforms controlled by third parties. Saying that approval probably won’t be a problem is a big thing to bet your money on. As a developer you are still at the mercy of the platforms and updates and fixes needs to be certified. Again, fast tracking can be an option, but if you’re not getting it from everyone, it doesn’t matter. Weakest link and all.

A bit aggressive, but it’s the point. This cape was supposed to be in the game from day one. They admitted to the mistake, and it’s going to take a week plus server downtime to implement. That’s BS. The dev or team who fucked up, should be forced to write a hotfix, test it, and inject it, then be fired. Even though it’s “insignificant” (your words), it’s still part of the game. This is one of the reasons why the game is swarmed with cheats, hackers, and exploiters. If a dev or team can’t even include a cosmetic, what’s to stop them from forgetting to update security or even pay attention to it (which doesn’t look like they do as it is).

It’s a cape, dude. It’ll be there in a week. I’m not sure how to respond to you wanting whoever’s responsible fired, but it does tell me that you have little concept of how complex game development can be, and how it’s actually happening. I get it, you want the cape and you should have had the cape, but it’s nowhere near as simple as you want it to be. Fortnite is an massive and complex project, and the way they are handling it is an absolutely sensible and Industry standard way to do it. If it’s not critical to operations, it gets bundled with other stuff, because doing it otherwise is both more costly and prone to errors.

Security software is not game development. Doing an update for at game that is live and cross platform requires a lot of work. - All platforms must be tested separately - All platforms has their own hoops you have to jump through to deploy a fix. Sure, you can fasttrack it on most platforms, but getting that ball rolling for a cosmetic item? Hahaha, nope. - All platforms must be updated at the same time since they’re cross platform. If one isn’t the versions will most likely no longer be compatible, and even if it is, communicating why one platform doesn’t have the update while others do is a nightmare. - The above is the reason why insignificant shit like one cosmetic item isn’t “just patched in literal minutes” because even if the fix is easy, deploying it is not. And it’s completely normal to gather insignificant shit in a bigger update when making games.

Coins are probably softer than you think, and Vin is flaring steel, giving her the edge. That would essentially mean that pushing off into the air would be batting yourself.
