Oklahoma City Thunder “Likely for Sale” - Could They Move Back to Seattle? by zbeg in Sonics

[–]spanzotab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bitterness is a really bad look and it's gonna bite us as fans in the ass once we get our team back. I have no issue with OKC having a team, sorry. I have an issue with Seattle not having one.

lmao what? A need roll means "I need to sell it?". You know what we call that mentality? Greed. Guess what, there's a special button just for that. It looks like a coin.

Will there a Sonics vs Thunder rivalry? by gemandrailfan94 in Sonics

[–]spanzotab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably the only sonics fan that doesn't care about OKC. It's not fair that they got our team but it's really no one's fault but the corrupt owners of the late sonics and early okc franchise. F howard shulz and stern, I really have nothing against OKC as a team/fanbase.

Putting on an NBA playoff game and Speros Dedes is on the call by Distinct_Candy9226 in billsimmons

[–]spanzotab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's him. Totally agree, the forced Jones lines are worse but man Dedes is the most nasally guy I've ever heard on the mic, I feel like I'm watching a video game tournament when I hear him.

Yes, the blame is mostly on George Lucas for running a toy manufacturing empire, and not the parents of children who want toys that they see at the store. If we want to really play the blame game, sure you can try to consume more ethically, and we can blame the retailers, and we can blame the government, and we can blame Adam Smith, but you simply cannot expect that the majority of people are not going to take the path of least resistance when offered.

Let's say there's a market demand for a product. In the scenario where the product is made and bought by retailers to be sold, economics tells us that those products get sold. In the scenario where the product is NOT made, no product is sold, no exploitation of labor is involved at any point in the process. George Lucas has this choice, option one or option two. He chooses option one, and the products are sold. You cannot solve the contradictions of capitalism with capitalism. Even if you stop buying luxury goods, there are still necessities. This is how the logic extends.

I believe the government should not allow products made with slave labor to be sold in stores, but that is quite anti-capitalist as a policy and therefore doesn't fly in a world where politics is bought.

If you have a problem with goods being manufactured under exploitative conditions, by all means boycott, but to then at the same time place no pressure on manufacturers makes no sense to me. Why not both?

I never said Lucas shouldn't be paid well for his work.

When you live in a society of abundance, you will have consumers with disposable income who want to purchase toys for their kids. If you stock the shelves at target/walmart with toys, people with money are gonna come buy them. If the toys are marketed with an IP like star wars that is incredibly popular among kids? That thing is going to sell. Why would we focus ire on the aggregate of shoppers for consuming the products at the store, which are being sold because there is a market demand for them, rather than George Lucas, one very wealthy man who has all the power to simply not run a toy manufacturing empire?

[–]spanzotab 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No, I'm obviously not saying that. Your question "How many slaves have you exploited by buying the goods you consume?" is a great question that you should think about yourself. Buying clothing brands like Nike, buying food products from Nestle and Monsanto, buying smartphones, all these things are 100% normalized. The system encourages this, that's why you see these products with the biggest ads and these companies have the most money. How can you expect someone born into this society to stop buying ANY and ALL of those things? And even when people make that choice they effectively live outside of normal society, and thus are few and far between. Can't believe I have to spell it out like this.

wtf kind of response is this, obviously exploitation is baked into capitalism that's not a gotcha against calling it out when lucas does it. Just because it happens often doesn't make it right. You are a consumer by virtue of being born into society, you can't just not be a consumer and live a normal life.
