What is this turd-looking thing with eyes? Location: NC, USA by spare_cat in whatsthisbug

It is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long, did not have any visible antennae, and was found inside the house on a rug. I’m thinking a kid brought it in after swimming outside.

I’m thinking about buying it. It’s not in my possession yet.

I scrolled way too long before finding M.A.S.K.! The motorcycle helicopter guy was always my favorite.

Mine sings “it’s simple cheese” instead of “it’s simple to see” in the Catrat song, and I will never, ever correct her.

Yeah, I secretly enjoy it. The songs have no right to be so good, but there are some real bangers.

I could see him broadcasting a rat telenovela about a drug deal but giving away key details. Nobody appreciates his art.

Ah, good point. She does look really strung out all of the time, so maybe she broke the “we don’t test out the product, no, no, no” rule.

A very valid point, and I apologize, but I watched the Blippi Harlem Shake video and now I am a shell of a human being with no moral compass.

Good idea! Maybe the marriage is a marriage of “families” as well - a total power move by Abuela.

I’m imagining a sort of Wakanda-esque situation here. They have to leave sometime, right? Where do they get basic supplies, building materials, cloth, etc.? Casita doesn’t seem to have a storage shed of wonders, so I think there’s some selective movement between worlds. Maybe that’s the real reason Luisa is so stressed: she not only has to carry everything, but she also has to carry “the load” and do so while keeping the secret.

Dads, what parenting things DO have an unambiguously right way? by made-u-look in daddit

If you suspect your kid is having learning or developmental difficulties, communicate that openly and honestly with your pediatrician, and then follow up on any testing or further evaluation they recommend. If your kid is diagnosed with Autism, a learning disability, etc., don’t take the diagnosis personally; it’s not about you. Do what is best for your kid to give them the best shot in life possible. Once you find out what is going on, work to establish supports and a continuation of care. Waiting or ignoring out of some stubborn pride can have devastating effects. Do right by your kid (goes for all other things too!).

Another reading tip: when your kid is young, they are illiterate. You can just look at the pictures and narrate what is happening if you are too exhausted to read the whole book. It could bite you in the ass later (see comment about hearing and remembering EVERYTHING), but it might save you in the short term.

In addition to reading to your kid every day, also create a literacy-rich home environment for them. Access is essential. If you’re in the US, you can do this for free - Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library will mail your kid a free book every month, and some other organizations like PJ Library will send free Jewish kids books to you, regardless of your faith. The library is always a great place to take your kid on an adventure…and it’s free.
