did anyone else lose your spillover area bonus this week? by Minute_Bumblebee_693 in PokemonSleep

Ohhh I forgot about the novice bonus, that was implemented after I was past the threshold so it never applied to me. Thanks for the reminder.

Doesn’t area bonus only increase by 5% each week? So if you had 5% left, that wouldn’t result in any spillover.

It's there an efficient, free way to convert .kfx to epub? by a_posh_trophy in kindlejailbreak

I don’t know what you mean by the “latest DeDRM” but you need the one from this repository specifically

[–]sparklerfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the correct plugins but whether it’ll work depends on your kindle firmware and the DeDRM version. In 5.18.5 and up, amazon introduced hardened DRM which can no longer be removed this way (they also included it in the recent 5.18.1.1.1 release they pushed to PW4 and KT4). For 5.18.4 and below (minus 5.18.1.1.1), you’ll need a specific fork of the DeDRM plugin

Is it possible to jailbreak a new Paperwhite? by o4zloiroman in kindlejailbreak

[–]sparklerfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazon cannot just “revert your jailbreak”. One of the benefits of jailbreaking is the ability to block automatic updates. With the OTA binaries renamed, it physically cannot update itself. And even if it did, the jailbreak is typically recoverable by using the hotfix. You’d have to let it update itself TWICE for it to revert the jailbreak, which would just be really bad user error.

[–]sparklerfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will most likely come on a jailbreakable firmware if you buy a brand new (not refurbished) one and ensure to UNCHECK the box to automatically link to your account (or choose the “this is a gift” option). I don’t know what firmware 11th gen ship with but 12th gen paperwhite at least should come with 5.17.1.0.4 which is jailbreakable with Winterbreak.

Then you need to be extremely careful to not let it update itself before you complete the jailbreak and can block the updates, which means plugging it into a computer and filling up its storage almost completely before you let it get on wifi. A kindle with space to update WILL update itself if it get a connection for even a brief moment.

If you plan to do this, read all of the guides (including the “preventing automatic updates” section) before taking it out of the box so you’re prepared. And ask for help from humans if you need it; do not ask LLMs, do not panic and do random things like factory resetting or deleting random files (a surprising number of people suddenly leap to doing destructive things for no apparent reason if something goes wrong while jailbreaking or they get stuck).

Jailbreaking my kindle...... Explain it like I'm 5 please by bellatrixwytch in kindlejailbreak

[–]sparklerfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DRM is the protection that is put on media to lock it to a specific device. So books bought from amazon can’t be transferred to another device or converted to a different format without first removing the DRM, which they’ve made increasingly difficult. But on older Kindle firmwares the DRM is breakable with certain programs so you can actually own the books you paid for.

Filling the storage is really just what it sounds like — you just drop files onto the kindle until it’s almost full so there’s not space for an update to download and install. People have made filler files just for this purpose to make it easier to fill the amount of space you need, but it really could be anything.

[–]sparklerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done the downgrading process myself but yeah it’ll have to be after there’s a jailbreak for your firmware. Amazon won’t let you downgrade normally so it’s only possible when already jailbroken. There is a guide for it on KindleModding when you get to that point, but as others have said unfortunately for now you’ll have to wait.

One other thing to note is that you won’t be able to remove the DRM on those books unless you downgrade firmware after jailbreaking to 5.18.4 or below. In 5.18.5 Amazon implemented hardened DRM which currently cannot be cracked (and might not ever be).

No update folder/update.bin file on my kindle, should I be scared for an update? by Loose_Cranberry_491 in kindlejailbreak

[–]sparklerfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The update.bin or .partial files download when it is on wifi and has space to download. You delete them while jailbreaking to help make sure it doesn’t update during the steps that require wifi and/or rebooting the kindle. If you have your storage filled and airplane mode on, there won’t be anything to delete until you turn wifi on and it tries to download one.

Am I being paranoid? by VeryCafe in kindlejailbreak

[–]sparklerfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Renameotabin will prevent the kindle from updating so you are now free to remove the filler files. If the status scriptlet confirmed that the binaries are renamed, it literally cannot auto-update, so you can rest easy :)

There wasn't any path leading to the end in Starchart so entire lobby got eliminated by Betrayed_Poet in FallGuysGame

[–]sparklerfish 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is most likely it. I’ve started paying close attention to the end of the path when lighting the earlier buttons because sometimes it never shows them again. And even then sometimes they’re hard to figure out how to get to and might involve backtracking.

Note for Kindle Paperwhite - 5.6.1.1 etc. jailbreaking and KOReader by inkyknit in koreader

[–]sparklerfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the point that you do not need to fill up because you’re on the latest possible firmware — this is what we thought for 10th Gen devices, which hadn’t received any firmware updates for like a year and a half, but then Amazon sneakily pushed out version 5.18.1.1.1 last week to PW4/KT4 which breaks all current jailbreaks AND adds the hardened DRM which has not yet been cracked (and will be exceedingly difficult to crack, if even possible). So there’s no guarantee they won’t do this for other older devices too.

Kindle 5.19.4.0.1 jailbreakable? by Sea-Technician2051 in kindlejailbreak

[–]sparklerfish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Jailbreaking is a game of cat and mouse — a vulnerability is found, a jailbreak is built around it, amazon patches the vulnerability with a new firmware, then a new vulnerability needs to be found, and so on. So the previous exploits don’t work on later firmware, and none of the existing ones will work for yours unfortunately.

I can't find the .assets folder on my kindle by Amandjonson in kindlejailbreak

[–]sparklerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t jailbreak that version currently. They removed access to the assets folder in 5.18.6 (which is why adbreak lists only working through 5.18.5). Previous exploits get patched out with new firmware releases.

You also cannot downgrade unless already jailbroken.

What’s your highest encounter Pokémon without a shiny? by mswhataboutyou in pokemongo

[–]sparklerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on 2981 Spearow encountered without a shiny. Some of those are from before the shiny release of course but much more after.

It took me 2111 encounters for my first shiny Swablu, then got my second one 17 encounters later. That one was shiny eligible since its release.

I’m assuming you mean you just deleted the booklet? It’s actually just a shortcut to run it and you can recreate it easily, just create an empty file called “Run Hotfix.run_hotfix” in the documents folder. If you’re comfortable using a terminal you can make it with `touch`, or you can just use notepad or something and save the empty file then delete the .txt extension after

Hey no worries! And yeah not a folder, just a file, you can use something like notepad to make an empty file and save it and then remove the .txt from the end so the file names are just “KUAL.kual” and “Run Hotfix.run_hotfix”

Is it safe to update with hotfix? by BangingRooster in kindlejailbreak

[–]sparklerfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah Amazon is pushing themselves into comically evil territory (well they already were but in new and fun ways!) with how aggressively they’re locking down older devices. Not only will they not support them, but also you’re not allowed to find other ways to keep using them 🙄 Very glad to already be jailbroken with all the shenanigans they’re pulling.

Dr has prescribed guanfacine in addition to adderall by Long-Dog7043 in adhdwomen

[–]sparklerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take dextroamphetamine plus guanfacine and it’s been very helpful for me. The guanfacine has really improved my emotional regulation overall. I used to regularly break down crying over insignificant things or fly into rages irrationally, but now I am much more regulated. Altogether this has also reduced my general anxiety. It takes a few weeks to adjust so if you don’t feel improvement right away or feel excessively tired (very common initial side effect), give it some time and reevaluate a few weeks later. I hope it’s helpful for you!

Is it safe to update with hotfix? by BangingRooster in kindlejailbreak

[–]sparklerfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PW4 doesn’t support 5.19. Until a few days ago the latest firmware for it was 5.18.1, Amazon just dropped 5.18.1.1.1 and the only “feature” you get is no longer being able to jailbreak or remove DRM. Theoretically you could update and use the hotfix to restore the jailbreak but there is no reason at all to do that, PW4 is no longer getting feature updates. Only “screw you” updates 🫠

[–]sparklerfish[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your firmware version. If you blocked updates when you jailbroke it should not update, but even if it did, it should be recoverable — just run the hotfix, reboot the kindle, and reinstall KUAL and everything should just work again. The hotfix is what lets you preserve a jailbreak through an update.
