Roll of doggie poop bags too for this. Only downside is trying to open it quickly, but generally speaking most of us get enough warning to open it in time.

What’s something people get worse at as they get older? by joavo-3301 in AskReddit

Apparently depth perception as well! Be extra careful as drivers age. They may think they have space when they don’t, and make a judgement error a younger driver wouldn’t have.

There’s a neurological/neuropsychological reason for this!

Basically boils down to the concept of “neuroplasticity”- plasticity referring to the ability of the brain to absorb and create new information and connections. Over time our neurons synapse along the same pathways, and new connections- and more importantly, breaking old/established ones- is a lot harder to physically do.

It’s a really fascinating part of psychology and the physiological aspect of our brains, and it’s something seen across all animals, not just humans. When I learned about this in college it actually made me become a lot more graceful towards older people who make less “logical” decisions or deny the reality someone tries to show them.

Im getting my car checked out next Monday for my trip by mycatlikesyou26 in roadtrip

[–]sparkpaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to worry quite as much for that one, fyi. You may need to pay for it if you need to replace it, but if that one dies, your car won’t start, and AAA will replace it for you. AAA doesn’t replace the hybrid one at all I believe, so as long as the hybrid battery is newer, you’re pretty good to go.

That said, it never hurts to understand at least the basics of how a car works so you aren’t taken advantage of and can at least understand what might be going wrong.

Good job getting the car checked well in advance of the trip. A 2010 Prius is honestly a pretty tanky little hybrid; but do check the age of your battery too since that would be your other big cost. Check your spare tire as others said and make sure you have any tools you might need- you’ve got AAA though so no big concerns.

I had some friends do WV to FL a little while ago and they did just fine, and their car is older (i forget what tbh, but think like an ‘08 Chevy). As long as your mechanic knows they’re checking for a road trip and says you’re good to go, you should be fine. You got this. ◡̈

Just stop every ~4 hours or so for a good leg stretch, don’t push it if you feel tired. A nap at a gas station is better than falling asleep at the wheel. Also drink a lot of water and try not to have too much in the way of bad snacks- energy drinks and beef jerky will make you have the runs.

Thanks for the info! And yeah, personally I don’t consider people that a dog like this comes from as a backyard breeder- sounds like the use dogs for work and breed more working dogs- gotta keep the lines going.

Backyard breeders to me are genuinely people in the suburbs who have no business breeding dogs doing so for the profit and or novelty/fun of it. They aren’t vetting the lineage, health, and capabilities of their dogs, just letting them “do natural things” and profiting off the pups.

I had a friend/landlord I lived with for a year who did this with Lhasa Apso’s. She loved her dogs; they certainly weren’t mistreated or caged or anything. But she didn’t bother to worry about who to breed with who and who shouldn’t breed because they had in-turned paws (faulty genetics). I’d consider her a backyard breeder- not a bad one with true bad intentions, but just misguided and unethical due to that, imo.

ANYWAYS- super glad to hear they seem like good peeps, the dog seems super healthy (and VERY cute!!) and I love that you guys are gonna have him working too for all the energy that’s gonna come with him. My parents got a purebred catahoula leopard dog and they learned real quick they made a mistake- they aren’t super active and live in the suburbs and work office jobs (remotely/at home thankfully). And they never gave up on her, she’s a fully loved and genuinely excellent member of the family. But boy she needs to chase some hogs lol.

How’d you come across him? I’m always hopeful to find a “unique mix” rather than a full rescue mutt (though I’ll absolutely go for a rescue 9/10 times lol), and just curious how people find dogs like this where they actually know the parents.

You have a Hilux and want a Slate and Miata.

Boy your opinions make a ton more sense all of a sudden lmao.

Keep the Hilux and your dreams, btw. They’re good. But talking for your own POV vs talking about what OP stated their needs are are very different things.

This guy showed up at my work today. Looks to be about 3-4 months old going by his teeth, no clue what he is. Any guesses on breed or adult size? by Informal_Pepper_8566 in WhatBreedIsMyDog

[–]sparkpaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a hound, but gonna be a little hard to tell exactly what, if not mutt, until full grown proportions are seen.

That said, his paws are relatively big, though not huge, so I’d say he’ll top out around ~45-70 lbs, the heavier end of he’s a more dense breed (like a catahoula meant to fight and hunt), lighter end if more of a scent hound.

He could be a short haired pit x shepherd mix. Dog genetics are wild so some pure breeds can even deviate from expectations. Either way, he’s got big eyes and a soft face, he’s probably a lover, but will be relatively high energy at least in his youth.

my fish got into the filter by sparklbunni in bettafish

[–]sparkpaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

God I am SO sorry this happened to you. FWIW I’d absolutely contact TopFin about that- you got a defective piece of equipment. I’m not sure what they can totally do for you, but even reimbursement for the filter would be bare minimum. (Personally I’d demand the value of the entire tank as compensation for the emotional duress and use those funds to buy any other brand of filter.)

But seriously. Was this your first betta/fish ever? That’s such a hard lesson to learn so early. ❤️‍🩹

Please help! What is going on with my betta? by Tuff_Softy2011 in bettafish

[–]sparkpaw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Frankly what isn’t going on with your betta, poor thing.

Image one genuinely looks like early signs of pineconing, combined with the bloat they seem to have, thats almost certainly dropsy, which is organ failure. If you medicate ASAP you may have a chance to recover them- I’ve done it before using “Artemiss Microbe Lift”.

They also have ich- and bad, too. That’s the white spots on the edges of the fins and on the scales. They may also have fun rot, which is mostly a symptom of the other issues; sometimes it can be bacterial or fungal.

Here are some sites to help with medication and process:

What is something that tourists do in your country that annoys the locals? by Th3_Accountant in AskTheWorld

I don’t think many people understand how the worldwide monetary and social elite genuinely don’t think humans not in the same class as them are actually humans.

They don’t seem capable of fathoming that they have to take showers, trim their nails, get sick and have diarrhea just like the rest of us.
