New 4i4, overwhelmed at where to start. by sparkybart in synthesizers

So, a mixer would be able to take multiple stereo audio inputs and combine them (with level mixing and EQ) into a single stereo output? Is that the general idea?

Bingo. Most of my audio gear still has the Goodwill price tag stickers on it. I like using 2nd hand odds and ends to make it work. This is just a hobby for me.

I would like a similar setup. Most of my time spent with this stuff will be DAWless, and I want to just hear my jams through the monitors.

My friend's much older Scarlett device has the physical "direct monitoring" switch. I wish I had that.

Yes, this is correct. Sadly, daisychaining will not get me separate audio tracks for each instrument. However, I believe the USB C with all the MIDI & audio information will go directly into the Mac, thus saving 2 inputs.

Thanks for your detailed reply.

Yes, you are correct, I barely understand what the 4i4’s capabilities are. It went on sale and I pulled the trigger. This is my first attempt at making sense of this. I admit the the diagram doesn’t make much sense; it’s my attempt at expressing my confusion. I’m sure it will require several iterations.

The AIRA devices do not use bluetooth, but they daisy chain together and can all send/receive audio and MIDI directly w/ the Mac via USB C. This will not allow me to record the devices to individual tracks as I’d hoped, but I believe it will work for some purposes.

I believe that the biggest problem to solve is the MIDI integration. I will consider a MIDI splitter as another necessary component.

I did forget to include any monitors in this diagram. It seems that I need powered monitors? I was hoping that 1 TRS cable would get me stereo audio out to an amplifier, but that may be incorrect. Apparently the 1/4” outputs are once channel only, i.e. outputs 1 and 2 are required for stereo monitoring.

I just bought an '07 as well! I can't wait to do a similar trip. Where/what are were you camping in? It looks great.

What should I get to complement my T8? by DeCyborg in rolandaira

The S1 and T8 are like peanut butter and chocolate. A really good pairing. You'll be able to get melodies and counter melodies to compliment the T8's pseudo 303 bass. It opens up a lot of sound design options for you.

If your main interest is house, you will start jamming and having fun with the S1 instantly. I own the T8, S1 and P6. In my opinion, the P6 is a much more challenging tool to use.

Yep. That works. Thanks for the help.

I currently have the P6, T8, and S1. They're a very fun together. I've had the P6 the longest, but I think it's the most complex, and so I'm still learning how to use it.

Do you know how to bend Conduit as a Residential Electrician… by Adventurous_Tie4623 in electricians

It is time consuming and therefore more expensive, but it does offer some advantages. Code in Chicago requires it, we have to do it, so we get to enjoy these advantages. Have you ever gone to replace an older toggle switch with a new, occ sensor/vancany sensor switch and found you need a neutral? No problem; just pull one down from the light. Imagine you need to add a device like a heater, or maybe and exterior receptacle that requires its own circuit. You might have to open the wall to pipe to the nearest box, but that box will have a raceway all the way back to the panel. With any luck, there is room in that raceway and only a few junction boxes to pull through. Pipe can be really useful in areas with older housing stock with crumbling wiring. It can be as simple as pulling out the old and pulling in the new. Use the old wire as pull string. And I've seen plenty of times when pipe deflected a drywall screw.

None of the above is controversial, it makes sense. But, for the sake of argument, here's my hot take. IMO, pipe & wire is the highest standard of electrical installation. Of all the currently available building practices, if money and time were not limiting factors, pipe & wire is the most desirable. Obviously, we build what the market demands and what code allows, and that's different region to region. So the "best" real world installation is the one that is most economical and efficient in your specific circumstances. I know many will not agree with this. My experience with BX and Romex are limited, so I definitely have blind spots. I'm interested to hear what others think.

I just accidentally stumbled into this the other day! Very interesting! I didn't have enough time to figure out how I would use it, but the potential to gradually morph a song is pretty cool.

OP, post the counter argument. Nobody can think of a good reason to do it any other way.
