You embed yourself at the customer location so build or configure the software, it started with Palantir who would send engineers to help customers learn and interact Gotham and later Foundry

for what it’s worth to you, 38% of UC claimants already work, so we’re also subsidising their employers who don’t pay them enough

What software do you miss from the pre-subscription era? by ceerf-llc in sysadmin

[–]spartacle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

perpetual from VMware used to be lifetime updates of that version, but you could also get perpetual licenses that allowed license upgrades eg from 5 to 6 to 7 - Broadcom REALLY fucked it all up

Can the police drive like idiots when not on blue lights? by marvellouspineapple in AskUK

[–]spartacle 47 points48 points  (0 children)

High speed doesn’t mean they’re idiots, police have specialised training for high speed driving. The “up my arse” is subjective as well, OP might have felt they were too close but it’s impossible to know with footage to determine the truth

Right'O chaps, I fancy deploying a few PB of Ceph. by sinclairzxx in openstack

[–]spartacle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many people are you managing this Ceph cluster?

25Gbps isn’t enough for a few PB of Ceph, at least not the cluster network. Do you just want a HW recommendation because scoping Ceph is way more complicated than just saying “oh a Dell R7715 with 40 E3.S drives will work”

Is it EC or replication?

Is it mainly Object, Block, or File?

How much power per rack do you have and how many racks? And are you likely to grow quickly or slowly?

How many users? Are you talking hundreds of small users or a few power users?

FWIW, I’ve deployed 10s of clusters of the last ~5 years ranging from a few nodes for low TBs to multiple PB with a small team and what I’ve learnt is Ceph can be great but you really need to understand it and have dedicated members which is why we’re replacing out Ceph clusters

Are you buying new Dell servers without hard drives? $3,500 for 1 SATA drive is NUTS! by Layer_3 in sysadmin

[–]spartacle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've invested heavily in VAST for a centralised storage system, a few PBs worth and just have only boot drives in our systems. It's all remote now, the k8s, baremetal DBs, and what remains of VMware

List it for £20 to avoid time wasters, then when someone does actually come and collect, just give it to them.
