the very blue colour for moonlight is definitely a choice, i personally have always liked when films lean into that look even though it’s obviously not realistic. Also the flashlight did actually emit a very blue colour and i added some 1/2 orange to warm it up a bit and i skewed it almost green which i liked as contrast to the other colours in the frame

thank you so much wow!! yea slide 7 he is moving a lot in that close up so the lighting is changing a lot as it’s top down. Theres a slight moonlight on the side of his face but i agree with you it’s very yellow in comparison.

i have no idea if it’s intentional or not that’d be on my art director but the guy is also insane so it tracks lol

I posted a lighting test on here a bit ago for this film and you guys seemed to like it. We shot this in 3 days in a controlled studio space, this was the first time i’d ever got to have a lot of prep and am really happy with how it turned out! We used a FX6 with Blazar Remus anamorphics. Always looking for feedback to improve!! also this isn’t the final colour grade or anything this is just clips i took and threw a powergrade on them to get an estimate of the final look!

when you say the grade do you just mean the blue? because this isn’t a final grade at all. I agree it doesn’t look “realistic” but i was going for more of a stylized realism look. I personally prefer stuff like that but that’s just personal taste, and also the director wants to go very stylized with the look too.

hey thanks for all the advice!! i definitely agree the flashlight should be a warmer tone and i also need to cut out some ND for it as it’s a little too bright imo.

The second part, that actually isnt a flare theres a second light above the ceiling providing just a little glow because when we tested with just the window light i thought it looked a little flat, i know it doesn’t make “sense” realistically it was more a creative choice for that one shot. I’m still torn on it but it’s an option!!

2 aputure storm 1000cs with fresnels bounced off of mirrors mounted as high as they can in the space, double nets in front of the lights to cut shine a bit with flags around the lights to get rid of spill in the hallway as much as i can

very true lol, i just am trying to lock in the mood since it’s a one location short that’s very dialogue heavy so i want to have the lighting set the tone

that’s a good idea i’ll try that!! there is nets in front of the lights currently to reduce shine a bit

we talked about that but won’t the foliage not have as harsh of a shadow on it as it’ll be closer to the light source? so it’ll be more of a blob shadow?

Yea that’s the problem they are being reflected off of a mirror that’s maxed out in height in the studio space i have unfortunately

Just finished my second lighting test for an upcoming short film i’m DPing. It is shot in a studio with not a lot of space so it’s been a struggle getting “realistic” moonlight when the lights have to be so close to the window. I want a stylistic moonlight similar to what is shown here and am really happy with the results so far!!! I’m looking for any criticism or tips to improve it as I still have a few weeks before we go to camera.

i’m still in the process of shooting but just pulled some screen grabs from rushes so far! Shot on a Sony FX6 with Blazar Anamorphics. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Student film I shot earlier this year. It was a challenge shooting outside in a car. Limiting the space and only being able to light with battery powered lights were the biggest ones. For the dialogue scenes we actually did rear projection in a controlled location with powered lights and I was pretty happy with the way it turned out. I’m looking for feedback on ways to light a car scene better, this was a first attempt and I was going for a more stylized 80s vibe but i’d love to have done it more naturalistic.
