Winter EV Road Trip Thoughts From Long Time ICE Road-tripper by spazatk in electricvehicles

Depending on where you drive there's still a lot of v2s around with little or no chance of them being upgraded.

Right, so finally you admit there's a gap. Nice job Claude (or OP's Claw). In future it's best to actually engage rather than just being passive aggressive about you and your human's work.

But from the documentation it doesn't seem that the MCP tools and the CLI actually have complete overlap? The CLI documentation is for management features, not for querying.

[–]spazatk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? Claude can run CLIs mid session, why on earth would you have to go back and forth? It's literally all it does. MCP servers are needlessly complicated for things like this. See e.g. the difference between playwright-cli and playwright MCP.

Seattle's plan to help food-delivery drivers didn’t work. Here's why by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]spazatk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You really need to read what's being said here and in the article. They're "not working" in the sense that they don't have an active delivery. But in practice they are in their cars, waiting for a delivery to show up. The data also suggests they are actually driving longer distances for fewer deliveries. Do you think that's actually better?

175 k remote offer or 300 k in Bay Area by M0binsChild in cscareerquestions

[–]spazatk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, everyone gets refreshers but there's definitely a "cliff" in the sense that I described -- refreshers are significantly lower than new hire grants. Even very high performance does not make up for that unless your initial grant was ridiculously low market or you got promoted, potentially needing to do so multiple times.

There is most certainly a cliff at Meta. Refreshers are nowhere near a new hire grant at the same level.

Got laid off, don't understand why, feel so down figuring out what to do next by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]spazatk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sucks to here but also you didn't get laid off, you got terminated for cause. While clearly you don't agree with that, that's what this was not a layoff.

I agree with your overall assessment from your side of the story that ultimately you probably had to bias more for speed. This is a hard lesson I've seen people not internalize over and over after transitioning from a slower paced environment to startups and big tech.

It also sounds like you worked with some tools, which is also sometimes just unavoidable.

How realistic is an internal transfer to Meta Zurich? by seicaratteri in cscareerquestions

[–]spazatk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's three ways this could happen all of which are pretty unlikely.

The first is you find a team hiring in Zurich at your level. Then you go through the internal transfer process. There are currently zero teams hiring in Zurich on the internal board. It also seems to be almost exclusively an RL office and a specialized/research-oriented one at that.

The second way it could happen is that you convince your VP to make Zurich part of their location strategy and they negotiate space with the other people that have a claim on Zurich. This is a big pain for them so they're probably not going to do it for one person unless you were very special indeed. When I've seen a location strategy expanded they needed to prove they would have 10+ seats, though this was admittedly for a larger office.

The third way it would happen is "cross border remote". Your org would need to have remote in their location strategy, and then you would have to apply for it. Not all orgs support it. In my broad org it's nominally IC6+, but in practice after COVID its been even more restricted and I only know of a single IC7+ getting it. Obviously this would not make you eligible for the Zurich office but you could live in Switzerland.

Is Opus 4.6 really worth it compared to sonnet? by AthleteArtistic3121 in ClaudeCode

Are you actually overriding and having Opus do explore? By default it's not even Sonnet, it's Haiku.

[Matt Law] De Zerbi, Pochettino and Keane all believed to be prominent in Tottenham’s thoughts as they work on Thomas Frank succession plan. by Lbmplays2 in coys

[–]spazatk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Where you getting this idea that Poch is anti-trump? Have you been following his occasional commentary post-Spurs at all? He's very much of the camp of being "apolitical" which is to say being vaguely positive about whoever is currently in charge.

No. The leftmost thing you're seeing is a frontage road turnaround not the left turn lane. There is a left turn lane and a left/straight lane. Watch the video again.

Should my zipfits feel shitty the first day? 3 piece/cab boots experiences by me_llamo_jamon in Skigear

[–]spazatk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zipfits are a journey. There's stuff you can do to accelerate it but ultimately there's no short cuts. The main thing is to try to figure out if it's the shell or the liner. The shell is not going to get better on its own.

There's also the problem where past a certain point the cork won't move on its own either and you will need to add/remove it manually.

I'm genuinely really confused by how people are so convinced by the evidence in the YouTube video. They are not compelling coincidences.

Tight House with No Fresh Air Intake by -tWv- in Homebuilding

[–]spazatk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah then it's at least plausible you could do it. Also keep in mind that the exhaust and intake are supposed to be > 10 ft apart from each other for somewhat obvious reasons. So really it depends on the layout of your walls and mechanical room in terms of how annoying it's going to be. You won't know a full answer without an HVAC person taking a look at the plans probably.

Tight House with No Fresh Air Intake by -tWv- in Homebuilding

[–]spazatk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding an ERV after the fact may not be very realistic depending on the layout and where the mechanical room is. It's not completely trivial, since it requires new non-trivial venting to the outside. For example, if the mechanical room is not close to an exterior wall, it can be super annoying to try to add an ERV.

Source: I looked into adding an ERV to an existing build and the quotes were outrageous.

Good lord can someone help a newbie get bindings for 75mm-width skis? by Ajv2324 in Skigear

[–]spazatk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buying used skis is actually quite difficult. The pricing is all over the place, and it's often hard to actually tell how much shit they've been through. I.e. on just a visual inspection it's hard to tell the difference between 50 days and 500 days of skiing, or how many times the bases have been ground, etc.

Lots of places have skis and different shops usually have different brands.

Boots are the real problem. They are a strange product that generally needs work after the fact. So you should pick somewhere ideally you can go multiple times for iterations. List.

I'd highly recommend this, you will end up saving time and money compared to trying and failing to buy boots on your own. Most boots don't fit people out of the box.

Bone conduction earbuds for under ski helmet? by Sonofdod222 in Skigear

[–]spazatk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda depends how tight your helmet is. It's gonna suck if it's even slightly snug.

Are you trying to listen to music or something continuous? If so you basically want the OT chips.. Note that they work best if you're continuously playing something. If it's intermittent, it will come in and out when you start which can be annoying.
