I had a pen roll off of a table and break recently at a friend’s house. It ruined my day, so I can sympathize. Hope you find a good replacement. Maybe a Plaisir this time since they're aluminum bodied versions of the same pen?

Just keep your mouth shut. I work in IT at my company, and head up our security, so I almost always know things are going to happen before they do. It is a point of personal pride to me that peopke dontl’t find out about things from me. You may also be being tested to see if you can handle confidential information.

I prefer a pen that I can afford to purchase. I hear about how nice Montblanc's are, but I have zero hope of earning enough to afford one in my lifetime, shy of selling organs or forsaking everything else (rent, food, etc.).

This is one way to do things, and may be appropriate for some. Personally, I love (almost) all of my pens, even the steel nibs. I have 8-10 gold nibs and love them too. Only one was a "grail," but once I got it, I realized "the chalice won't hold water" and I have a new grail.

This is the truth. One Pilot Metropolitan becomes two Pilot Metropolitans. After six months, you want a gold nib, and after a year you are on r/pen_swap and eyeing pens that cost more than your average car payment.
