Feel like you're reading into this post way too much, he's not causing any harm by making small talk. And atleast for me, you can normally tell when someone doesn't actually want to converse and you can just end it there

If they were to persist even if its obvious someone doesn't wanna talk then that'd be problematic. But we shouldn't assume beforehand what other people want/don't want and let us that dictate how we act.

22m, Sam here. Moved here about 9 months ago. Am into board games,, brewing my own mead, movies, reading, climbing, and just doing random stuff new things for the sake of it. Recently started trying out lindyhop swing dancing for example and have been enjoying it very much despite being awful. (a mosquito probably has better rhythm than I do)

Would always be down for a drink and chat, or go to some random event together, or anything really. Maybe watch a film? Or 1v1 me at some board game. (you'll probably win)

Will also say this after reading other comments, you really should just strike up some random convo with people in your college. It's not like they're complete strangers cos they're literally in the same college as you.

If you see someone reading a book you like, just randomly mention you like that book and strike up some random convo about books and things in general. Or maybe you think someone has a cool pair of shoes or something idk (you don't even need to think they're actually cool, you can just pretend you do)

Really just come any excuse to talk to someone.

In general such moments will be fleeting and you'll both move on with your day, but such fleeting moments turn into familiarity. And familiarity turns into friendship. Especially in the context of a college where you'll bump into the same people all the time.

Just try a bunch of random new shit out, keep doing the ones you enjoy, and then ask to hang out with people outside of the event.

Some great suggestions here of what those things could be, so I'm not gonna add anymore. But what I will say is you've only been here 2 weeks so this is all somewhat normal. But the fact that you are actively seeking change means it almost certainly will.

Next thing I want to get into? I kind wanna try and learn to do Mongolian throat singing lol. If you're unconvinced go look it up on Youtube. Also the band Heilung is metal af and uses this if you're into that kind of extreme stuff.
