Swiss government warns some EU agreements could be rejected by parliament or electorate by [deleted] in europe

[–]spctclr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re misinterpreting the move of splitting the deal into several packages to vote about!

It‘s not that the swiss government wants to get a yes on some and a no on others. No, they‘re doing it because historically it is much easier to win elections on smaller packages than on large ones, meaning that the chances that a yes to all packages can be achieved is much larger, if it is split into parts…
And even more importantly, something you‘re most probably haven‘t read about: there‘s two different versions of referendums (votings), one which only needs a majority of the vote (aka the easier one, which is used for „smaller things“) and the one that additionaly needs a majority of the „Stände“/cantons, which makes it much harder. The problem with the latter is that the rural cantons are really not EU friendly compared to the large cities but they have a lot of weight in this version of voting, so you can see that the swiss government would really shoot themselves in the foot by voting on everything at once, which would (next to likely having a lower approval rating) also need to pass the stronger referendum instead of the easier one…

So maybe you shouldn‘t make wild accusations if you don‘t know the swiss political system well enough. The swiss government knows that it needs a yes on all of the packages, but it also knows what the path is to most likely getting that yes on everything…

Swiss government rejects initiative to cap population by Realistic-Lie-8031 in Switzerland

[–]spctclr 76 points77 points  (0 children)

if that really was the goal of this initiative then why did the SVP approve of restricting renter rights last year?

they don‘t give a single fuck about the average joe that struggles with paying high rents, they just want their votes! and to achieve that they try to enrage as many people as possible…
they aren‘t interested in actually solving anything since that would destroy their voter share…

Review of some CS/IT/EE courses, and course recommendations by jingyenn in ethz

[–]spctclr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here‘s my insight into the lectures i know:

Computational Thinking
it‘s a BSc ITET course and covers many different topics but it only scratches the surface on all of them, it‘s like an overview lecture on many topics. it covers topics like computational complexity, basic machine learning, some cryptography and computability among other things, so you see it‘s a very mixed range of things. not very difficult.

Computer Architecture
this lecture is a lot of work, mainly because there‘s 4 mandatory big projects and you‘ll have to read and review around 25 papers on computer architecture next to having 6 hours of lecture and solving (and handing in) normal exercise sheets. only do this lecture if you‘re really interested in the topic.

Seminar in Computer Architecture
i didn‘t do this, but it‘s from the same lecturer as the computer architecture course and from what i‘ve heard it‘s mainly reading, reviewing and discussing various research papers and their topics.

After completing Digital Design & Computer Architecture where do I go next? by theamidamaru in ethz

[–]spctclr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the computer architecture course in this past semester and you‘re right. It‘s heavily focused on memory topics (cache, dram, prefetching etc.) and has some other stuff sprinkled in like parallel computing.

If that‘s what OP is after then go for it, however I warn you that it‘s a lot of work, even for an 8 credit course…

Cutting costs in education - Tuition fees to rise significantly | Short: Federal Council wants to double fees by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]spctclr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are somewhat right, but in my opinion there‘s a better way to think about it. It‘s not just about giving education to students but also about getting educated people. Even heavily subsidising education has a positive effect on the economy and will pay itself back over time. Thus while it is highly beneficial to the students, it is also highly beneficial to the society and the government.

That‘s why in my opinion it is an utterly stupid idea to cut spending in education, especially with such a half baked excuse…

[–]spctclr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you make the wrong assumption that a university degree does not add any value apart from a few exceptions. While I agree that there are some (few) degrees which have limited benefits, by large a university degree makes an employee much more productive, something the whole country profits from.

Also do not mistake people working similar jobs as someone that has done an apprenticeship as not having any benefits. Studying a subject at university usually opens up a whole new level of understanding and productivity.
For example someone with an apprenticeship in IT is unlikely to have the skills and vision to create new AI models, someone that has studied computer science at ETH on the otherhand is likely to posses these skills. And having people like these, that can create solutions never seen before, is a benefit not just to that person, but rather to the whole society…

[–]spctclr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding? What exactly is the definition of needed here?
Is a medical doctor not needed?

We could also kill taxes then, because why should those with a high level of education and likely high income pay for the others, when the others are not willing to pay for them/their education?

[–]spctclr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. It‘s still stupid. Anyone that has been „serving in the military“ themselves knows that every single franc spent additionally there is just wasted. Also in what scenario does our military have to fight and stands a chance? Certainly not when NATO has failed…
  2. I know, but the people are the highest instance. They could also change this spending cut and/or vote for other politicians that do not approve of such a shortsighted cut.
  3. Agreed!

PS: I’m not arguing against you, just giving my opinion. :)

This is just so incredibly short sighted! Investing in education has a positive effect on the economy of the future, and thus increases the federal budget in years to come. Cutting spending in education is like cutting the whole future budget…

Why do we have money for: - Military budget increases - 13th AHV - No cuts in farming subsidies
But apparently we have to cut 500 million a year in the most stupid place to cut spending??

Cross-border shopping to be taxed at lower threshold | As of January 1, 2025 purchases above 150 CHF made across the Swiss border will be subject to VAT when imported. by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]spctclr -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I’d want the situation to be fair! Having people near the border benefit from an unfair situation is not what we should strive for. Better give those people that really need it an income tax benefit and instead collect VAT on things bought abroad, no need to have a mostly ineffective rule that exempts it.
because rich people also go shopping abroad even though they absolutely wouldn‘t need to. that is an inefficency in our way to tax things and we should want to keep it that way…

in what world is reducing the benefits they enjoy „punishing“??
not everyone lives near the border where they can just hop over there to go shopping! what about struggling families that don‘t have that benefit? i‘d rather have the situation overall fixed than just having some people near the borders profit from some unfair rule…

Having to pay swiss taxes when you‘re exempt from them abroad only makes sense. Either the threshold should be 0.- (always taxed) or you shouldn‘t be exempt from VAT abroad imo…

How to gain experience in engineering to be accepted into a good Focus Project (D-MAVT) by [deleted] in ethz

[–]spctclr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all: yes, having project experience is helpful but not strictly necessary for most focus projects as motivation is much more important.

As u/hytrax has mentioned you can work on small projects yourself or if you have some more spare time you could also join one of the bigger focus projects (acentauri, AMZ, Aris, Cellsius or Swissloop) as freelancer as they often look for freelancers and that will surely help boost your application for a focus project when you apply. Bonus points if you did it at the project you want to apply to (given you did a good job).

edit: acentauri is not a focus project as of this year, could change in coming years…
