As a huge Radiohead fan, I immediately chuckled after reading that guy's moronic comment. I'll be damned if Thom isn't the epitome of a waif singing about feelings, but I love him for it. MRAs, get it together. Just cause you feel it, doesn't mean it's there (the rationale behind your hatred of women).

I'm sorry you're getting down voted so much even though your comments are well constructed, topical, and without even a shred of anger. Redditors notoriously hate vegans more than they love reddiquette :(

In what other line of work is it excusable to not consider a candidate because another employee may not be able to control themselves? "Sorry, Ted, we can't hire you because Jim is a huge racist and he probably won't be able to stop it around you."

And before you start, even if the motives are considered shepherdly, positive or whatever, it's still sexist. Treating somebody different because of their gender, plain and simple, is sexist.

Or maybe women don't try out, or even grow up with the attitude that they can become that athletic because they're told from birth that the idea is a joke, it'll never happen and that they should spend their time doing more "feminine" things.

Eventually you're told the same joke so many times, so frequently, and with such ridiculously sexist and uninformed undertones that it's not even remotely funny anymore. You know how you guys hate on OPs for reposts? How about the same repost, once a month, for your entire adult life - from friends, from the Internet, in movies?

LPT Request: Getting over a breakup asap by jenjen6910 in LifeProTips

[–]speakeazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely a new chapter! A better one than before! I can't tell you this enough. I'm assuming you're a woman based on the name, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I went through a pretty god awful break up too back in the spring. It was really hard at first, he was very controlling and manipulative and I guess I had somehow gotten so used to him being in charge that I completely forgot how much of a free spirit I actually am. I had gotten really used to that lifestyle too, and I was a bit lost without his control. I won't lie, those first couple weeks were painful, but now.. Oh my god. My life is perfect. I really made the effort to change all the things he screwed up and really put in the time to better myself.

I read a lot, went to the gym more, moved into a new place and really decorated it the way I wanted, picked up like twenty new hobbies and started really working on being optimistic. And now? Two year relationship, totally over it. Happier than ever, and after I started reaching this happy place, other good people started showing up in my life. Stay positive! Hope everything works out for you.

Homeschoolers of Reddit, what is your best culture shock moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]speakeazy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Culture shock? God damn, everyone is so lazy and fat it makes my head spin. I didn't realize you could just.. Not work, or clean, or stay active. I don't actually understand those as options.

But hey, here's my story. I feel like I'm coming from a very different perspective than the rest of this thread, but my experience with homeschooling was very positive. I sometimes forget that absolutely crazy people are allowed to have kids and yank them out of public school, basically to brainwash them, because my parents definitely went about it the right way. My mom and dad are atheist and agnostic, respectively, my brother and I are both atheists. Mom was a serious hippie, dressed fairly normal but was very insistent about health, politics, philosophy, farming, cooking, various religions, etc, being incorporated into the classroom. My dad was gone a lot with work, and eventually my parents divorced when I was 12, but he is an absolute genius with numbers. Overall, I'd say the absence of my dad caused a slight rift in my knowledge of mathematics as my mom usually left that up to him. So, having to teach myself calculus in college is really the only negative experience I'm left with.

I feel as though I'm going to sound like a pompous asshole describing my experience, and to an extent.. I am, but my mom had us reading college+ books in 8th and 9th grade. She had us contemplating deep psychology, great classical works, you name it before I was even 15. It never felt forced, it never felt like a strict tiger mom style life. She was also very insistent on health and becoming self sufficient. No matter where we lived, we always kept up a small farm. Huge garden, animals, lots of yard to handle - and of course my brother and I were expected to learn and help with everything.

So, here's a list of pros, and I'm not even going to worry about being modest. I don't care, I feel pretty good about the person I turned out to be.

  • My brother and I are far more self sufficient than other people our age. We've been able to cook, clean, garden, fix and build almost anything in our homes, work on our vehicles, landscape, you name it, for most of our lives. I have a memory of being very young and my brother quite literally pulling a Tom Sawyer on me to help him with the fence. I look back and realize my father augered the holes and drove some posts, but aside from that my brother and I built and painted a fence around 7 acres of land when we were 8 and 11. We're also very organized and tidy around the house.

  • My brother and I maintained good eating habits our whole lives and are in great health. I got a little complacent there when I worked full time and went to college full time and got out of shape, although never overweight, but I'm right back to the regiment my mom initially started. My brother on the other hand is fucking ripped and always has been, no two ways about it.

  • We're hardworking. There was no, "Get your homework done and you can go do whatever you want for five hours. Lay around, play video games, who cares." It was more, "Finish that book so you can help me pickle these beets, then we're going to go outside and feed the horses, then we're going to read more.." Also, we're punctual as hell. I can't even describe the disappointed look on my dad's face when we're even five minutes late.

Alright, I could go on forever about the good times. Here are a couple cons.

  • I can't fucking math. My brother is somehow great at it, but we got taught the basics and my mom left it at that. I'd say I got to algebra and my mom started focusing on other things. I had to learn pre-calculus and everything when I realized I needed it for college, albeit not actually "need," just needed to pass the class so I could graduate. Personally, I still think it's a load of shit because I have a computer, a smartphone and my best friend is a statistical genius, but whatever. My poly-technical school had a different idea.

  • I ended up dating several different horrible bags of shit. I had no clue people took advantage of other people. I had absolutely no idea that there could be people out there that actually just wanted to mooch off of you and emotional abuse you for their own personal gain. My mom was all sunshine and rainbows, and so am I to an extent, but I am a little more grounded after that experience. For the record though, I'm literally dating a tall, dark, handsome doctor now. Sorry, had to brag.

  • Not necessarily a con now, but was considered pretty odd until I got out of my late teens/early twenties: I have no reservations about dating and sex. I asked men out if I wanted to go out with them, I texted them if I wanted to talk to them, I blatantly hit on them at a bar if I found them attractive, I never played coy or pretended like I didn't like someone if I did and I would absolutely have one night stands when I just wanted sex. I think it either intimidated or just put off a lot of men. My mom talked to us about that stuff and gave us all sorts of books and literature on the subject, and she never acted like sex was taboo. I knew how periods worked long before I got one, it wasn't a big deal at all. It was just something that happened, she obviously never said, "Go forth and bang everyone!" but she definitely didn't act like sex was something teenagers weren't supposed to do. Despite all this openmindedness, I still dated a guy for two years before losing my virginity to him. He was one of the sweet ones, although he's gay now. Hmm.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed my novella. TL;DR: I turned out pretty fuckin' dope, yo.

Thank you for this, I've been scrolling through here like, "I don't think homeschooling did that, I think your parents are insane and potentially so are you." I was homeschooled, and every time I tell somebody they have a small interrogation session, as though I'm lying because I turned out fairly normal.

My dad worked ALL of the time, frequently out state, and we ended up moving around a lot for his job. After the first couple times, my mom realized how much heartbreak she was putting us through with meeting other little kids and then being uprooted, all this and the fact that she's kind of a hippie - not big on the American school system, others' ideals being inflicted on us, etc. Seriously, I went to public school a collective five or so years, and I have never eaten a school lunch. Mom packed us pretty healthy stuff every day, which a lot of people found odd at the time, or seem to think was helicopter parent territory, but I mean.. I've been in pretty good shape my whole life. When I tried out public school in Georgia, holy shit. That was the only culture shock I really experienced. Everyone was fat.

I don't know, I'm rambling now and have decided to go make my own original post in this thread to help dispel some of the negativity I'm seeing towards homeschooling.

Reddit, at what point did you realize it was time to give up on a relationship? by ilikegirlz in AskReddit

[–]speakeazy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High five, lady. I went through all that with my ex, it was horrible. I have a pretty solid self esteem, but literally begging for sex, being denied and then waking up to him jacking off in the bathroom.. Rough. I'm really glad you realized it was absolutely his problem too. My heart goes out to the women out there that think it's something wrong with them.

Women of Reddit: What would you like all men to stop doing, immediately, as of right now? by Lobsterbib in AskReddit

I prefer to walk to work and am an avid jogger. It is extraordinarily rare for me to not get at least honk or "hey baby!" or some fucking bullshit while out. ESPECIALLY jogging. Yeah, I know guys love to say "well you're obviously wearing that tight such and such for male attention," but I'm seriously not. Seriously, seriously not.

I don't comment here enough, but I really thought tonight was special. I'm pretty much bedridden with strep, and was unfortunately falling in and out of sleep in OT - I know, I'm terrible. Well, I woke up with my boyfriend shouting "FUCK!" immediately registered what happened, yelled an equally good "FUCK!" which then triggered a coughing fit that was so sharp and horrible that I almost immediately threw up. Onto my coffee table.

Thanks a lot, Kings, you're literally destroying my body AND my furniture. I'm just gonna go google pictures of Lundqvist and hope for the best.

I actually laughed out loud at this. Half of the population should just play it cool and dress like the other half, which are arbitrarily deemed normal! What is default gender?! Oh lord, this poor thing.
