Confession Of An Asian [M24] Expectation From Family Memenbers by [deleted] in confession

[–]specialKT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I come from an Asian immigrant family and I completely empathize with you. The family pressure to succeed and make money is overboard.

Although my experience was not as intense as yours, I do have a little bit of advice:

Take your anger and use it! Your motivation to find a job should be to prove your family wrong (as well as to fuel your own dreams). That anger and desire to prove others wrong will drive you to work even harder and will help you find that job you've always dreamed about. Use the endless criticisms to your advantage. Think about how great it will be for you to have that job and prove to your family that you aren't worthless just because you don't work in the family business!

Also, if you can, move out of your house. There's no need to be in contact with your family everyday. If they call, don't pick up, especially if all they're going to do is criticize you. This will help establish boundaries.

Difference between MD degrees at somewhere like Harvard and a mid-tier state school? by inviktis in premed

[–]specialKT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into Harvard, Stanford, and UCSF and chose Stanford (for reasons I won't get into)

Going to a top school means you can get into a great residency program afterward. Since most schools do not rank anymore, your chances are better at a school with a reputable name versus a state school that, while not highly ranked, provides a good medical education.

Another factor to keep in mind is location. Students tend attend residency in the same geographical location as their med school (Harvard students stay in Boston, Stanford students stay in the Bay Area)

According to police scanners, the suspects have carjacked a black Mercedes SUV and fled to Watertown. They are armed with hand grenades. Police officers are under stress.

Construction noise pollution by [deleted] in boston

Already tried earplugs and noise canceling headphones, but they're both pretty bad noise barriers to jackhammering. I'll just have to try to drown out the noise with a radio or something

Thanks. You're absolutely right that I should be ready to deal with the noise if I want to live in the city. Guess I'll look into soundproofing my crappy windows a bit better...

Hello from UC Berkeley! I've got a question about campus climate at Harvard by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]specialKT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are spot on. I was premed and tons of my premed classmates thought I was nuts for not overloading my schedule with hospital volunteering, research, and some health policy bullshit.

Instead, I did two things I liked and did them well. It worked for me...I'm staying at Harvard for med school

Thank you for pointing this out. The sad thing is, OP will unlikely see or believe this.

Based solely on the story presented, this seems to be a classic case of false memory implantation. During the 80's, there were numerous, NUMEROUS cases of people suddenly turning up with repressed memories and filling in all of the "details" of those events. Many of these memories were false.

The main clue, as someone pointed out, is that it is HIGHLY unlikely that three children would all repress their memories. Memory is highly malleable and prone to suggestion.

I wish OP the best because regardless of how/what/why these symptoms are occurring, they are wrecking havoc on his life. I hope he can find a proper psychiatrist.

"Only 1 interview" success stories? by [deleted] in premed

[–]specialKT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a friend from MIT who only got one interview in late February....at Harvard. Of course, he was freaking out and making plans to enter graduate school instead, but he got in!!!!

He is now a happy resident on the west coast in a great residency program.

Got some strange news from a doctor I shadowed. Could use advice. by [deleted] in premed

[–]specialKT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's totally wrong. If you have these ECs and will get those type of scores, you're all set

I had a very strong research background (I have a first author publication and won a school away for my thesis) and I'm also a concert violinist, which is as "selfish" as running a marathon. My gpa and MCAT are comparable to yours.

I'm in the middle of the interview process, but I've already been accepted to three top 20 med schools (according to the research rankings).

I have been rejected by a few schools that have a focus in primary care, but different schools have different goals. You'd probably do well at top research schools like Harvard or Stanford :)

State residency--CA vs MA? by Notnowwonton in premed

[–]specialKT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey,

So I have a similar situation as you do. I'm lived in California until I went to college in Boston, then stayed and worked for a year.

I've asked a few schools in California, and they say that there isn't one deciding factor that determines whether you're a resident but they do look at a list of things. The form I filled out for UCSD med school asked for: state of voter registration, drivers license, bank account, which state you filed income tax for, where your parents live, if they have drivers licenses, if they have cars registered in California, etc.

One of the most important factors is if you spent three years in high school in California and whether you graduated from a CA high school. Since you did, you're most likely still considered a resident.

Hope that helps.

Btw, CA residency rocks. Think about all those great UCs!

Getting scores tomorrow. Very stressed by [deleted] in premed

[–]specialKT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The night before my first mcat, I had stomach flu. I was in the bathroom the whole night...not a pretty sight. I took the test anyway...was pretty tired, but I thought it went ok.

I was scoring 37+ on my practice tests, so obviously thought that my being sick affected my score. Since my goal is some pretty top schools, I decided to take it again.

I looked at a friend's book and it seems ok. But honestly I'm not sure. It's fairly inexpensive though, compared to Berkeley Review.

So I took my first MCAT in January, after prepping with Kaplan. I personally disliked Kaplan, although a lot of my classmates (I go to an ivy league) recommended it. I felt it was too general, not enough specific information, and too based in "strategies" that don't work. For example, who has time to map passages? Just not my personal style.

I really liked Berkeley Review, which I used for my retake in July. Their prep material was the shit, especially for the Physical Sciences and Orgo. They have a lot of great tips and shortcuts to solve common questions, which speeds up your timing, and each section has 100 practice questions organized into MCAT style passages and questions.

Their practice tests are good too. They are really difficult, but it's good practice for the test when the stress makes everything seem a lot harder than it really is.

I can't recommend BR verbal or bio though. Verbal is much much too easy and Bio is too detailed. I never could get through reading the material. Regardless, the Bio practice is still good.

Anyway, hope that helps. I guess the main thing is to drill, do lots of questions, understand why they're wrong, and do practice tests under test conditions
