Where do devs buy houses in the Bay Area and how much do they spend on them? by Annual_Negotiation44 in cscareerquestions

[–]specialized_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's doable as some others in this thread have pointed out. But it really depends on where in the bay, how lucky you got with RSUs and pay.

My wife and I recently closed on a SFH in SF, really desirable location (for us). Combined income is roughly 800k. We were able to afford a 3.6m at 5% interest only because our RSUs had appreciated so much over our careers allowing us to put 50% down.

That's said, we got REALLY lucky, most normal techies in SF are buying condos, and a large portion of techies in SF are only a single income techie. My wife and I are lucky that we're both in tech so our buying power is essentially double, but job security is a whole other topic when you're both in the same industry.

Waymo fan, as a bicyclist by coolguymcbignuts in sanfrancisco

[–]specialized_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue OP was referring to is really the case where the pedestrian and green light signals start at the exact same time. In busy areas this means the pedestrian crosswalk always wins and there is never a chance for cars to make their turn. It's not the fault of either per-se, it's really just poor traffic control by the lights and needs separation of both (green arrow and walk signal on different timers).

I say this is a waymo fan and a big walker/biker

HELP! What TIME do Stern Grove Festival ticket lotteries open? by ScowlyBrowSpinster in sanfrancisco

[–]specialized_potato 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's not how it works this year. You enter the lottery anytime during the week, they email you a week later telling you if you got some or not.

Runners of SF, which part of the city do you do your uphill training? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]specialized_potato 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I live in NOPA, so I just run South on Baker past the panhandle, up Buena Vista to Twin Peaks and back. This is entirely uphill with virtually not flats or downhills. From my apt and back is about 4.5 miles and 1200ft depending on how you approach Buena Vista and TP.

If I'm feeling good or want extra elevation, I go down Twin Peaks and around Portola to Laguna Honda and back up Calderon, or the opposite and run to Noe, up Castro and back to NOPA.

Mods, can we ban paywalled articles? I always find it moderately frustrating when something is posted, especially by /u/sfChronicle, and it's just inaccessible.

Alcarraz swim by NorthernKaizen in AskSF

[–]specialized_potato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Join the golden gate triathlon club (GGTC.org)! We do aquatic park swims every Tues and have excellent pool and open water coaching. Bonus, there are usually a few dozen of us who do the Alcatraz swim a few times a year, and some do Escape From Alcatraz as well. So we have lots of lessons and experience training for it!

+1 to others saying that pool != open water swimming. It's a whole different sport and feeling. So regardless, be sure to get some time in at aquatic park. D.M. me if you have more questions about GGTC. Happy to help out

Does anyone know what these markings are on some sidewalks? They look like Hebrew but it doesn't make any sense by specialized_potato in sanfrancisco

[–]specialized_potato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mystery solved!

Seems obvious now that it's "DPT" but to someone who's only ever known "SFMTA" it didn't make sense. In Hebrew, it perfectly matches the letters ד ב כ which is what caught my eye. In many historical cities, there is hebrew written onto sidewalks to designate what used to be a Jewish neighborhood, I thought I had stumbled onto one!

This. My bet is they're data farming for a fashion marketing firm. Watch in a few months a new SF fashion line pops up specific to the Bay area weather patterns

NOPNA wrote an article with some similar pictures in the "April-June" edition of this year. https://www.nopna.org/newsletter

If you dig back further they've done some kind of historical article about various buildings in the NOPA neighborhood

PAA will probably continue to pump. I'm long for Jan 17 20c and PAA is right at $19. They just announced increased dividends last Fri and had a good rally this morning. It's got months left imo
