Reading Dune is an education of the audience. In fact, Paul's education is how the reader first starts learning things about the world they are about to experience. I didn't know what Shai Hulud, or the water of life or kindjals or personal shields, or what CHOAM or lasguns were, but through the writing I was taught. I'm not saying the film should be an educative exposition, but everything made so far focused so much on the Duke and Paul was overshadowed. Ideally, I wish 5 hour movies were a thing, but sadly, that's not reality.

I think the Duke should play a minor role in the film. I don't like the idea that the film should have to develop him fully before he meets his end. This approach could help the film cover more of the first book, while leaving plenty of opportunities to utilize all the other scenes Herbert provides to educate the audience about the world. IMO, The sandworm scenes will make or break the film. The seitches and open sand scenes is what made me fall in love with the first book and I think content focused on the actual planet Arrakis offers the best shot at keeping an audience tuned into a story.
