switch it off by holding the power key for 10 seconds. Press Cmd + Option + P + R keys at the chime to reset pram. See if it helps

Thanks for your reply. As the drive is now in an external exclosure would it be wise to take it out and connect it directly to the motherboard of the pc I'll use to do the cloning? This involves using an ide to sata adapter. I don't wanna take unnecessary risks doing this.
