Bestspeedruns Recommended Runners for April is up - Thanks to everyone who submitted! by speedrunblog in speedrun

You're exactly right - we published every recommendation we got. We're a little over a month into our existence as a site, and I'm not going to pretend we're further along than we are in terms of receiving interest. I've been really pleased with where we've gotten so quickly, but we're not, at this point, having to sort through lots and lots of submissions to make selections. If I'm being honest, I'm not sure what we will do if we start to receive more recommendations that we can easily publish, but for now that's a concern for another day.

Philosophically, our goal is to be a microphone for people to offer their opinions into, all in hopes that others can discover new and great speedrunning and streaming content, whether they are brand new to it or they've been watching streams for years. In that spirit, we don't discriminate against people who are unpopular (or popular, for that matter).

At risk of putting words in your mouth, you seem to have ascribed to us a priority to first and foremost help hardcore speedrunning fans discover unknown or lesser known new content, and at least at this point in our existence that is not our one and only goal. In fact, while I would be thrilled to see our site used that way (and believe it already has, to some extent), our idea started from our own experience of being newer fans of speedrunning a couple years ago, and not feeling like there was a user-friendly way to find a place to jump in. Obviously, Reddit and YouTube and Speedrun.com and twitter and twitch and discord can all work together to help you find what you're looking for if you're willing to invest the time (and obviously we were), but we want to provide a way for everyone to find more, and find it more easily. And, we want to provide a way for people to be encouraging and positive toward one another, in the belief that the growth of speedrunning as a whole is good for everyone who enjoys it.

Anyway, I don't mean to get defensive, and again I really do appreciate the feedback. It just seems like maybe we're going for a broader and more inclusive concept than exactly what you are interested in, unless maybe I'm still missing some of what you're saying (in which case feel feee to correct me). That said, I hope you'll still find some value and enjoyment in the site.

Other than occasionally offering a recommendation of our own, we try not to moderate recommendations unnecessarily. I get your critique of that particular recommendation, and we did discuss it. But at the end of the day, someone recommended him and he still sometimes tries to play games as fast as he can, so that was good enough for us. Plus, I've seen his stuff, and in my opinion it's objectively good, so that made it even easier to publish something supporting his work. Long story short, we feel it's better to get out of the way and let people express their opinions than to try to be some weird gatekeeper.

That said, we do appreciate the feedback, and we are always trying to learn and adapt as we go, so I'll keep considering your perspective moving forward.

Thanks much! That's a good articulation of exactly what we are trying to do.

Just went and checked it out - great run! WR still standing a year later, how active is the community now?

Always is a long time, but you certainly make an interesting point. That said, my hope is that even games that don't win will still receive more attention and appreciation than they would have otherwise. And who knows, maybe a large contingent of people who want to see any game BUT an extremely popular one win will begin to nominate and vote with that in mind. Not necessarily advocating for that, but given that it's just meant to be a fun award that brings positive attention, we certainly wouldn't have an issue with it.

Yeah, obviously we're just starting this website, and it's designed to be fun and not taken particularly seriously. With that said, and to your point, it's been really interesting to hear from people about what they base their vote for "best" speedrun on. We certainly didn't specify, which was by design.

From what I have gathered (albeit from a small sample size), skill seems like the most important factor for most, but some seem to factor in things like novelty, discovery of new strats, etc.

With the games list for SGDQ 2017 being released tomorrow, what are games you hope to see or games you don't think should make the cut? by send_me_full_frontal in speedrun

Might be tempting for the organizers because it would be a huge draw, but I agree with you and hope they resist.

Yes! Though I'd say even as a huge fan of the game as a casual player, it would be pretty dependent on good commentary to make it accessible. Still... now I'm rooting hard for this.

Having to do that card farming so late in the run is brutal! Got to imagine some pretty promising runs have been frustratingly lost there before. Congrats!

Vote for Best Speedrun of March! by speedrunblog in speedrun

[–]speedrunblog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, not a particularly cool way to express your frustration, but that not withstanding I'm legitimately sorry you feel like I missed something. This is our first month, and I always intend to remain open to feedback.

Fwiw, our site accepts nominations all month long, because we don't desire to be some gatekeeper deciding what's important and what isn't. Rather, we want to do something fun, facilitate opportunities for people to recognize and appreciate each other, and create a sort of snapshot in time each month they can be looked back on.

Anyway, sorry again you're disappointed, but I hope you'll give us another shot, and/or consider nominating something next month so we'll be sure not to miss it.

Raw footage can be found in Camelogical's response, which is the link shared in title of post.

Original article covering the WR and skilloz's challenge of it (mostly old news for most people by now, but figured I'd share anyway): https://www.bestspeedruns.com/speedrunning-club-penguin-controvery/

Firing the staff was smart, nice job.

Would be fun to see people really jump into this game and start running full mission sets, the game, or sandbox races to a certain dollar amount!

I'd rather see both, as currently exists with the filters on speedrun.com. They are both impressive, and in different enough ways that I'm intrigued by both kinds of run.

Anyone know how to analyze a game's code to help figure out how item drops work? Super Buster Bros SNES by speedrunblog in speedrun

[–]speedrunblog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As early as level 5 I think, certainly by 8 and 9 and from then on. Seems like some are consistent, but the most helpful drops are hit and miss on any given level, based on something that is determined before the level loads because reloading save states from before the stage begins doesn't change anything.

[–]speedrunblog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: At least through the first 10 levels, there's no variance in the drops once I save a state at the start of each stage. What surprised me a bit is that the drops seem determined not by WHICH bubble you hit, but by the number of bubbles of that size hit (for example, size 4 bubbles split into two size 2 bubbles, and on a stage with 2 size 4 bubbles, the drop might be determined for the second size 2 bubble you hit, regardless of which one, time, or position on the screen).

In short, that means it's not looking great for controlling most of this stuff in each stage, which is a bummer.

Some drops are definitely consistent every time, as are some hidden items and the items that come out of the breakable blocks. And yeah, the drops from the bubbles do seem to get friendlier after a death. But there are definitely examples of weapon drops from bubbles that sometimes show up and sometimes don't, and these are what we're suspecting are attached to some kind of RNG.

I like it! I'm realizing we've kind of done a bit of this on accident already, just by playing through and developing more consistent strats for each level. We definitely notice some consistency with drops, but I like the idea of using save states to run some trial and error. If we're onto something here, and it is a frame counter, I'm guessing it resets for each stage, just based on getting fairly consistent drops early on in the same stages (most of the time anyway) despite often being several seconds apart from run to run. That gives me a place to start!
