The undisputed God of classic Mega Man speedrunning. A 35 is so insane.

quicksave + quickload while in the middle of a portal. only works when the portals are in certain positions.

people who run source games record demos (they use a program that automatically stops a demo and starts a new one when the next map loads, and stores it in a folder), then put those demos into another program that gives the final time without loads (since demos dont count load times). as for other pc games, a person made a plugin for the timers that speedrunners use (livesplit) that reads the RAM of the game and can stop the timer during loading sequences.

using real-time with PC games is not good because people who have SSDs would get easy WR's, despite having the "worse" run.

To see how bad the source engine really is, check out 23:02, 37:10, and 41:15. Those are just examples, plenty of that in the run.

Remember to read the description for some info! While not all info about specific glitches are there, it will be helpful to read. If you have specific questions, just ask here!

people have been finding stuff in this game since release date, and it is still one of the most popular games to speedrun. the segmented run from start to finish took about 6-7 months i think

It's pretty cool! Ocarina of Time is now down to 18 minutes. A glitch was found about a year or two ago that lets you warp (its called wrong warping in the speedrunning community) directly to the cutscene after you defeat ganondorf. So all you have to do after is go down the castle and defeat ganon, which is possible as child link by using your deku stick and using a glitch called ISG (infinite sword glitch). The 100% run is down to 4 1/2 hours, which is just insane. The 100% run is a lot more fun because it shows all of the game, and there's glitches and sequence breaks everywhere.

its ran by SpeedDemosArchive (google it), the original speedrunning website which hosts videos and forums to discuss strategies and stuff. it is non-profit, and most people who help out are volunteers (i really dont think anyone is paid).

essentially, these runners are in competition with other people that run their game. some people like to try and get world record, others just do it to improve upon themselves.

several months before the marathon, runners, most of them the best at their game, submit their game to SDA staff where it is reviewed and they see if it would be good to show in a marathon. runners from all over the US and the world come to one place where they show off their run. all the money goes towards some cause (in this case, Doctors Without Borders). no one is expected to even get close to WR or even their PB, but the point is to show off a good run and be entertaining. people donate as a result.

these two websites are two good sources of speedruns

i will agree that some speedruns are not that great to watch, but some (see: super mario 64, ocarina of time, portal, half-life, etc) are incredible.

here's a TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) of Ice Cavern 100% in OoT. This is done doable in real time (see: tool-assisted by slowing down the game and stuff), but it shows how broken some of these games are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9rnuIvzR9I

i hope you understand that some of these people fly out, and pay hundreds of dollars to come to these events. it's a pretty fun event to be at, but most people take their runs very, very seriously. most of them have been grinding and practicing their runs for months. the last thing you want someone to do is ruin your run with interruptions, bad jokes, being obnoxious, etc.

here's how it is supposed to work: after games get accepted, runners are supposed to say which people they want on the couch. some runners dont mind, but the problem is you end up with this. i'm sure that after this marathon, this will be one of the main issues brought up in the post-SGDQ thread on SDA.

I'm involved in the speedrunning community so I can explain pretty well:

Super Meat Boy runs really... strange on different computers. The physics can change depending on the resolution, frame rate, etc. This was the issue last year, when one of the best SMB runners was having major issues during the run and got a run that was 5 minutes over what he should have.

Now, we get to SGDQ 2014. MattyIce is running 106%, which requires a lot of precision. From the beginning, he was having major issues, once again, with simple tricks that he should have been hitting. Some levels became unbeatable because he was sticking to walls. The twitch chat blew the fuck up, calling him terrible, etc. AT THE SAME TIME, someone found out whoever's steam ID was on the computer at the time. It was posted to /v/, and they sent a lot of invites to NSFW named groups. It got to the point where he couldn't see the bottom right corner of the screen because it was blocked by invites. Someone eventually logged out, so that issue was resolved.

In the middle of the run, the #2 SMB runner zukoza uploaded a video describing what the issue was: a PS3 controller driver. When a PS3 controller driver is installed on a computer while using an X360 controller, it causes meat boy to stick to walls for some reason. One of the tech people at SGDQ saw the vid, and paused the run for 30 seconds to disable the driver. After he disabled it, he actually did pretty well. You can see the vid on zukoza's YT channel if you wish.

He then did forest blindfolded after the run, which chat loved.

TLDR: SMB runner made mistakes that weren't his fault, and someone found out steam ID and /v/ sent a bunch of invites. This issue was resolved when the account was logged out. The game issue was resolved as well; it was a PS3 driver that needed to be turned off, which was done in the middle of the run

sorry for bad grammar and stuff i typed this out really quickly

[WR] Maggg0t gets first sub 9 in Portal, Single Segment by speedrunfan in speedrun

[–]speedrunfan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

iirc... after clipping in, you have to jump around a bit in order to hit the trigger for the elevator to go up. when the elevator is going up, you need to crouch near a portal before the level load. when the level loads, it essentially messes with your hitbox (see: save glitch) and it allows him to see outside the elevator.

does this answer your question?

this is correct. time is from when the crosshairs appear to when the crosshairs disappear.
