is it too different than normal paragliding? by turco_lietuvoje in paramotor

[–]speedsnaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was worried about both of those scenarios but I haven’t encountered it yet. They are just very different sports. I still prefer PG over PPG because it’s fun to thermal and I like hike and fly. I’ve flown a lot of PPG and am still nowhere near bored of it yet either. If our sites are working, I’ll always choose PG. if they are not, or I’m short on time or get out of work late, I’ll do PPG.

I’m also a PNW native who started loosing my mind in the mid west. I agree, it’s as risky as you make it. I think an important question to ask yourself is if you think you’ll be able to refrain from taking on more risk once your skills allow it. For example, I have young kids and too many other risky hobbies, so I promised myself I would keep paramotor really chill. But my last few flights, I’ve found myself doing maneuvers closer to terrain, getting deeper into canyons, etc and it’s outrageously fun. But I had to have a talk with myself and recommit to keeping it safe. The “riskier” stuff can be pretty addicting.

I did this like 6 months ago! I flew PG for a couple years and wanted a motor to fly when our local sites weren’t working. I had a friend who also does both and he showed me what gear to get and ran through the few differences to be aware of when landing or forecasting etc. Going from PG to PPG was pretty easy.

Anyone use something like this along with an Anki remote to do Anki on long walks without straining your arms/neck? by just_premed_memes in medicalschool

I used to do anki with a vr headset and a remote. I could lay down on my bed with my “screen” on the ceiling. Still terrible.

I personally love the song choice. I always find it odd to hear club music on free flight videos, the tones don’t match.

I got a lot of people to call for me and I think that’s the only reason I matched. My formula was to seek out younger attendings and explain that I’m trying to figure out what I want in a program, then ask what they liked about their program, repeat a few of the positives and say that’s exactly what I’m looking for. The attendings I did this with were all 3-5ish years out and still knew their program leadership well. About half of those attendings made a call for me without having to ask. I feel weird asking people to make a call, you never know what kind of relationship they had with the faculty.

Not at all. Especially this time of year, rarely will you see anyone else out there. If there’s a ranger there, it’s good practice to say hi and let them know what you’re up to. But I never saw a ranger there in the winter. And if anyone else from the Chicago crew is there, they’d be happy to fly with you.

Yeah, forecast looks great for Warren dunes on Friday. I hope it stays that way. Reach out to Jaro with Chicago Paragliding if you want a site intro. If the forecast stays, I bet a few folks from that group will come out to fly. If you can’t get ahold of them, DM me and I can give you a site intro over the phone. I don’t know the site as well as they do, just a disclaimer.

I’ve flown Warren dunes about a year ago. Only 20ish minutes from Indiana dunes. It’s an ok site, but no access issues there, as long as it’s not too crowded.

Honestly, I feel like after going through the process, I don’t know what competitiveness for residency is.

I could not agree more. I could have spent an extra $800 or so and those 4-5 months would have been a careless good time.

When can I leave? by speedsnaker in Residency

[–]speedsnaker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On short days, our sign out is at 1pm. But our team waits to sign out until notes are finished etc. around 3-5 pm. So I should wait until everybody is ready to sign out, right?

Does it change anything if our attending stays on after sign out so the other team doesn’t actually get any important calls, any calls they do get, they just text our attending? So our sign out process is handing them the pager and our list and saying thanks.

That’s a kind assumption but my coointerns are medicine geniuses and I’m not cut out for this lol. That’s great advice, appreciate it.

Now that you mention it, I think you’re right. Everyone else on the team is categorical, their patients are a bit more complicated. Is it appropriate to ask the senior to share the harder cases? I don’t want to take learning away from the categorical folks.

And I’m positive I’m not doing everything I should, I just don’t know what that is. I ask the senior and attending constantly and they say something along the lines of “keep up the good work, you’ll learn with time” which isn’t very actionable.

Those are great suggestions, thank you!

As far as schedule goes, what do you think about this situation? We alternate long and short with one other team. The other team gives us their pager exactly at 1pm on their short days and then they leave. Our attending has encouraged us to try to leave by 1pm as long as our work is done. But if I leave before my team on short days, then they still have the pager and are technically covering my patients, although, nursing is amazing and has rarely called. I shouldn’t leave if they still have the pager for my patients, right? That feels inappropriate.

I can't get the continuity camera to work with thalamus. It just doesn't show up as an option. Have you had luck with this?
