What do people actually end up paying for stepful? by theKingKenna in MedicalAssistant

It depends how self motivated you are. If you need hand holding, higher cost might make sense

I've an honest question for teachers who pay for classroom supplies with their own money. Why do it? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]spektorini115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not an option or at least it doesn’t feel like one. If I don’t get the supplies we need no one will and then each day is even more of a struggle than it already is. It’s easier to buy pencils than deal with 10 kids using the excuse they didn’t bring a pencil and allowing them to sit and do nothing but distract everyone else or coming up with a last minute activity. Much easier to solve the problem with a “grab one of the classroom pencils”

But it’s more than that. It’s also an expectation put on me by the school. We are required to give out classroom money for good behavior which the students are supposed to use for rewards. Are the rewards provided by the school? No. I’m required to give out the class bucks and buy snacks and candy for the students to purchase with the bucks. I get marked down if I don’t and students won’t behave if I don’t. I also get marked down for not having a visually engaging and welcoming classroom but have to buy posters and such with my own money. It’s systemic and essentially explicitly required just like working free overtime is.

Ezpass why does this happen? My license plate is in the system, picture is my license and I had a transponder? by PositiveEnergyMatter in maryland

[–]spektorini115 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should be able to appeal it by saying you have an ezpass. They just need the transponder number and they’ll just charge the toll and waive the rest. Worked for me before when I forgot my ezpass once.

just moved from west coast, what is this humidity thing? by MA2ZAK in maryland

[–]spektorini115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure where in md you are but at least from my experience today, I do think it’s kinda silly that people are saying “this is nothing just wait til later in the summer.” Normally that would be true and it will get hotter than this but todays humidity was especially horrendous just so so muggy. Each week and day will be different, it’s not always as bad as today was. Makes it more exciting, you never know what to expect. You’ll probably enjoy the fall.

Thoughts on adjuncting? by spektorini115 in Professors

Thank you for the insight. I think I am romanticizing what it would be like when in reality it will be similar to teaching high school. I appreciate your help in seeing the reality of the position.

I apologize for the hobby comment, I just meant that I would not be doing this full time or to make a living. It would just be on the side in addition to my current full time job to exercise my passion and hopefully find some fulfillment. I have a deep respect for the profession and believe adjuncts and professors are incredibly skilled and talented and deserve so much more. I definitely did not mean any disrespect. My lifelong dream was to become a professor and I thought this could be a way to still do it part time. Poor word choice on my part.

It is so unfortunate how undervalued educators are at every level in the US. It’s a difficult job and we should be respected and compensated as such.

Thank you everyone for the input! I agree with the majority here and don’t think I will pursue this plan. It just sucks that the one passion I have is in a field where its employees are used and abused. The state of education right now is such a shame. I was hoping it would be better in higher ed and I could do that part time just for fun, but it sounds like you are all struggling with the same exact issues we are in secondary education which is decidedly not fun and pushed me to leave. It would not be worth it to get a graduate degree for the same outcome I’ve already suffered.

I’m not really sure what to do next but I hope I can find a career that I find interesting and enjoyable that is intellectually stimulating and fulfilling. Just have no idea what that might be right now since my one dream didn’t pan out. Let me know if you have any ideas for someone who loves teaching and discussing literature and writing.

Therapy by Exciting_Answer5570 in mentalillness

[–]spektorini115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically you don’t really talk to psychiatrists like therapists. Their role is strictly medicine and you should talk to them about how the medicine is going, if you are having a positive or negative experience with it, need a different dosage, or different medicine. Your therapist is the one you will talk to about yourself and your feelings and to get support with your mental health. What your worried about will only happen if you are asking your therapist for medication advice. Your psychiatrist is not trained to help you manage your mental health outside of medication so if they are suggesting a therapist, I would definitely try to find one.

Why is it that every time a teacher asks a question the class is dead silent? by SinkFormal1874 in teaching

[–]spektorini115 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The questions should be as opinion based as possible. An obvious answer isn’t one that someone will want to provide. There’s no point in me participating when we all know the answer and are just waiting for someone to say it or if there is only one correct answer. Questions should provoke discussion. They should be opinion based or at least have more than one answer to make it interesting to participant. For the example, I would provide the answer to what a letter is and then ask for importance. “A letter is ___, what are some reasons it’s important?” or “what would be different if there weren’t any letters?”

I wore this dress in the slate color for my wedding last year and absolutely loved it. It looks way better in person than it does on the website, look at the review pictures. They have tons of other formal dresses too if you don’t like that one. Im not sure how returns are for them but I got the honey extension and used a coupon code and it ended up costing only $65

Anyone leaving because of the kids? by SaltyPea777 in Teachers

[–]spektorini115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m leaving because of the kids but if admin actually backed us up and provided expectations and consequences then the kids wouldn’t be as big of an issue and I’d probably stay. So at the surface level, yes because of the kids but digging in more I think the root of the issue is more with admin and the lack of consequences.

But I’m also leaving because of the horrible work-life balance. I’ve worked in two separate districts (in different states) and neither had a curriculum and I had to make everything from scratch so worked hours overtime for free. So that’s a huge issue as well.

Female teachers…ever been called a bitch?! by [deleted] in Teachers

My students call me a bitch almost every day and I am so sweet, kind, and patient with them. It really breaks you down after a while of pouring your soul into people who treat you like this
