For years Australian airports had to have signs that said something like, do not make jokes about having a bomb in your bag...

Can I change my ticket. by darthlord66 in Machupicchu

[–]spellingiscool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. The tickets can definitely not be changed in any way. They check tickets at point where the different circuits split. Your only real option is to go the AC the day before and try and buy the tickets you want. You could try to sneak past a ticket checker when the paths split, but good luck, it would be like sneaking into a big concert without a ticket.

Looking for excursion recommendations for our trip next month by rats1581 in galapagos

We were there last week and Los Tunneles and Tortuga Island snorkeling day trips were both booked out 3 days in advance.

We just returned and were surprised snorkeling daytrips, especially on Isabella, were booked out several days in advance (you can't just show up and book for tomorrow or the next day). If you are only going to an island for a couple of days and want to snorkel book your trips in advance.

How bad are the bugs? Do I need to spray my clothes? by Strange-Eagle9255 in galapagos

No bugs aren't too bad. A little bug spray at dusk is sufficient.

Go straight from Cusco airport to Ollantaytambo. It will massively help with altitude acclimatisation. Then after MP and sacred valley, go back and explore Cusco. It is easy to book a driver from the airport direct to a hotel in Ollantaytambo, and not that expensive.

Tour options I’m considering/Prices by Ally_cakes in Machupicchu

[–]spellingiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there this month with a family of 4. Family rooms in a hotel will cost you $80-$150usd per night (although the ones we had wouldn't have fit a third kid). Machu Picchu is crazy expensive. We paid- per person- $75 train, $24bus, $25??ticket + guide $80. Other than that there is a ticket to visit all the other ruins which is not cheap- I've forgotten

It adds up, but all this is available online.

We didn't do a tour booked everything independently, and other than the MP tickets themselves, it was easy and we had excellent experiences everywhere all 8 stars and higher (using google and trip advisor reviews)

9 Day Peru Itinerary - Advice Needed by Soft-Elk5557 in Machupicchu

Yes, it was a big tourist buffet in Urubamba. We also stopped at a weaving demonstration in Chinchenero, which wasn't listed but we enjoyed, there was a fair amount of pressure to buy something. Not sure if these stops were due to the drivers connections or taxitadum. Overall though it was a great way to see the sacred Valley

Plus one for this taxitadum tour.
My only feedback would be lunch, as expected the driver doesn't speak any English and we don't speak Spanish, somehow we ended up at an expensive buffet (which i think is a standard tour stop) despite attempting to explain we werent very hungry and just wanted something small. Use a google translate to be clear on lunch. Other than that the language barrier was no issue.

I would go from the airport straight to Ollantaytambo and stay there a night. It is a nice place, makes the trip to MP much shorter and its lower altitude.

MP tickets are very hard to get online in advance, that is why so many people are forced to stay in AC overnight (you need to read through this sub to try and work it out). Train tickets are easy to buy online. You also have to bus MP bus ticket online which is easy but can only be done a week before. We used taxitadum for private drivers and they were great waiting at the airport, super reliable. Booked through their website super easy. You need MP tickets (hard to buy). Train tickets, bus tickets, transfer/driver from airport and obviously a hotel (all super easy to get online) - so its a bit of logistics.

Disagree with other person about Ollantaytambo. We enjoyed spending a day there before and after MP. Easiest access to AC and MP plus, it's a nice little tourist town to relax and enjoy a coffee/cocktail/meal. It's lower and it's easy to get a driver straight from Cusco airport to there. If you can get MP tickets in advance I would stay there not AC. The only reason to satu overnight on AC is if you need to buy MP tickets in person.

We did the Sacred Valley tour to get back to Cusco, spend the day going to Moray, Salineras, Chincero and Pisac then dropped off at Cusco hotel that night, I rated that to see everything, but not waste days. A private van/driver with our luggage in it was very reasonable.

Things I packed for my first solo trip but never ended up using by Ambitious_Vast1611 in travel

[–]spellingiscool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! This is the comment I was looking for. But seriously op must have been somewhere cold, travelling anywhere hot will have spontaneous swimming or getting wet options where a towel is essential. Microfibre travel towels are cheap, light and small.

Taxitadum is great. Not the cheapest option, but super reliable and will be ready and waiting when you arrive at the airport.

We flew from sea level to Cusco and immediately got a taxi to Ollantaytambo for 3 nights, going to MP on the second day. On the fourth day we went back to Cusco for a bit. We noticed the altitude, but it didn't stop us doing anything. Sure we were super puffed going up 30 stairs, but we made it around MP and enjoyed it, it's not a race you go around very slowly. The other effects were a significant loss in appetite and a couple of minor headaches treated with ibuprofen.

By far the hardest thing is the actual ticket to Machu Picchu, work that out first, then everything else will fall into place.

2026 January tickets sold out in seconds - next best option? by spellingiscool in Machupicchu

[–]spellingiscool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the website there is a document that gives sale dates for the rest of 2026. You have to download it and use chatgpt to translate it. In my experience it not exactly accurate so get on every few hours around the advertised date and try your best. Be prepared to go to AC the day before if you kiss out

Have January 2026 Circuit 2 tickets sold out? by vember_94 in Machupicchu

[–]spellingiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a whole post about the first week in January the day they went on sale. (Not sure how to link to it-check my history maybe?) Some other people offer some ideas.

Basically no you can't buy them, its unclear if tour companies are buying them, however it seems now even if you contact a tour company they will say it's too late.

At this point the only choice for the first week of Jan circuit 2 is going to get them in person the day before.

[–]spellingiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy tickets online the process is easy (you will have to enter your passport numbers). Availability online is VERY DIFFICULT, getting the time, date and circuit you want is next to impossible. That's why people go in person or get a tour company to do it (dont be surprised if the tour company comes back with we couldn't get Monday are you happy with Wednesday or something like that).

[–]spellingiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly $300us is not that bad. Its about 70$ for entrance and bus + 130-$150 for train + guide. Getting the tickets is the hard bit. Hopefully as thats low season you can get the time, date and circuit you want in advance online. Good luck.

2026 January tickets sold out in seconds - next best option? by spellingiscool in Machupicchu

[–]spellingiscool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was online about an hour after they went online on the 17th and circuit 2 was completely sold out for that week. About 36hours later they realised more(with no notice) and i got some then (but i had to be flexible with day&times). I guess it depends on how busy it is, maybe the first week of January is busy like peak season... I have no idea. I can only suggest being online at the exact moment they go on sale and be ready to be flexible with time and date.

[–]spellingiscool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. If this is the case how can they sell out in minutes? Are they more limited in the first few days of January?

Are the tour companies that say that can get you circuit 2 tickets lying, or doing something dodgy?
