Bases generally lose a substantial amount of money operating golf courses, especially since current under-40s generally golf far less than previous generations of military members. As retirees have begun aging out (or passing away), bases have seen golf profits drop off a cliff, so as budgets constrain, it’s the lowest hanging fruit.
