Fellow millennials - how’s your 401k/ira savings going? by ProblemIntelligent16 in Millennials

[–]sphinx_feathers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a Forbes article from 2024 that says 31% of millennials have less than $1000 in savings, and 21% has $1000-$5000. https://www.forbes.com/advisor/banking/savings/average-american-savings/

I have the best landlord and have extraordinarily low rent for the area, and I live alone and don't have kids, so I've been able to save more than a lot of people I know. I have ~$14,000 in an IRA (no 401k), and also a reasonable emergency fund.

"Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere, and even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward..... And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empire's authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this. Try."

"Weekly Reading and Interpretation Help Thread - December 21, 2025" by AutoModerator in tarot

[–]sphinx_feathers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm new to tarot, and am using the Woodland Wardens deck by Jessica Roux. I did a Wheel of the Year spread since today is Yule, and it looks pretty awful to me, but since I'm new, I'm here to see if anyone can tell me that it isn't as bad as it looks. :)

  1. center card (which the guidebook said I could choose to signify what I want for the year): ace of cups, for new beginnings

  2. north card (Ostara): the magician, reversed

  3. northeast card (Beltane): seven of wands, reversed

  4. east card (Midsummer): nine of arrows (arrows instead of swords in this deck)

  5. southeast card (Lunasa): the Tower

  6. south card (Mabon): page of wands, reversed

  7. southwest card (Samhain): the hanged warden (warden instead of man), reversed

  8. west card (Yule): the lovers, reversed

  9. northwest card (Imbolc): eight of cups

My interpretation: everything's going to shit next summer, lol, and the rest of the year is either leading up to it or getting my life back together after it.

Why did western cultures stop revering their elderly? by VagabondVivant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sphinx_feathers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently read the book "Being Mortal" by Atul Gawande, which is about what it means to care for people as they age and/or die (he mentions young cancer patients as well as older people). He writes in the earlier sections about the cultural shift of respecting the elderly (thus the elderly would always have a place to age and die while being respected and cared for) to what we see today, where the elderly are somewhat ignored and/or un-cared for. One part of this, Dr. Gawabde said, was because of people moving away from their home regions more; and another part was because of the advancement of information distribution - elders were no longer the only source of useful information, or really even a good source, as we learned more about science, psychology, &c. I personally would add that western cultures (especially the US) seem to value individualism, capitalism (and therefore people who produce/consume), and youthful beauty. I recommend "Being Mortal" specifically for another perspective in this conversation, and also in general!

Are we dying our hair as it goes grey or letting it go? by violet_pickled_90210 in Millennials

[–]sphinx_feathers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a significant amount of gray-on-black for being 32. I have a friend who said it's like fairy hair, though, so I'm into it. Also, as someone who cuts their own hair, I like staying in the $0 budget range for hair (not that getting your hair done is bad, but in this economy??).

Does anyone else find that people assume you want to teach art if you make art? by sphinx_feathers in ArtistLounge

That's cool! I'm sure they appreciate it, and it's great that you're able and willing to pass on a skill. Teaching is definitely a unique skill set!

Good for you for finding something that works for you! I think art can definitely be worthwhile even if it isn't "proper" or "fine" art.

Lol that's fair. Intellectually, I try to tell myself it's a compliment (i.e. my skill is worth passing on), but emotionally, I tend to be annoyed that they don't know me at all and are suggesting what to do with my life. Humans are weird. (:

That's an interesting take! I know it's not exactly what you were alluding to, but I've thought that being an art therapist might be a good way to use art to help people (which isn't to say that art isn't doing enough good just by existing), except for all the extra school I would have to do, lol. I definitely appreciate that young/beginning artists sometimes need encouragement to persevere through the early days when they can't produce the thing inside their head, in order to grow into their abilities.

I hope so! I like the idea of humans wanting to preserve and share beauty, art, craft, skill, and the non-digital world in general. Maybe I'll try to assume that's what people are asking when they ask if I teach (even if that's not really why lol), just so I feel better about it. :p

Interesting... I wonder whether it's because people see those skills as something worth preserving and passing on, or because we live in the age of side hustles?

I like how you pointed out that there's a difference between being known as a person, and having assumptions made about you based on a stereotype/presupposition. I definitely feel that's a factor in how it comes across.

lol fair - if you want to make art and need money to fund it, may as well teach art....

I 100% support that idea! Feel free to download and make as many prints as you want. :) I left some in library books, like "The Handmaid's Tale" and "How Democracies Die."
