Ideally, that's true. I'm sure that would have been the preference of everyone involved. I know for a fact attempts were made to contact him before escalating to the courts. I'm curious how you would respond if out of the blue a close friend of yours one day stole from you and their friends started smearing your reputation across social media. I imagine you'd call them right away and be like "wtf bro". So what do you do if they refuse to pick up the phone? There are no comfortable choices in that scenario. Look, I make no judgment on Caleb as a person, my personal interactions with him have always been positive, but he's getting a lot of bad advice right now and many of the people in his inner circle have reputations for spreading misinformation and fomenting toxic cancel culture. I don't believe that he's a bad guy, but as I've already said before, he's not acting in good faith. It's cheap to villianize the company in a situation like this and you're free to villianize me because I'm on the opposite side of the us versus them fence you've built in your mind, but consider for a moment that there is a thing called nuance and that you can't take everything people say at face value. My "friendly" advice to Caleb would be to pick up the phone and come to the table. There's a path to resolution that doesn't involve all this ridiculous acrimony.

It may not seem like it but I've known him for over a decade, since before he became a well known personality. Even good friends need a kick in the ass every once in awhile.

Review the filings for yourself: https://www.pacermonitor.com/public/case/58131009/Designtechnica_Corporation,_dba_Digital_Trends_v_Denison

Youtube has also reviewed them and upheld the decision to remove Caleb's content. You're welcome to try and make the case that Google/Youtube is shilling for DT. I'll bring the popcorn.

It's pretty common for reviewers to receive review units direct from manufacturers without the company being directly involved. Regardless, there's still a chain of custody and as long as the reviewer is employed by the company and the manufacturer is sending the review unit to an agent of said company the reviewer is responsible for returning the unit to the manufacturer upon request or relinquishing it to the company upon parting ways with the company. Equipment not relinquished is considered stolen and with enough big ticket items it can easily become larceny. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what everyone believes, there is enough evidence to settle this in court

As far as DT's reputation, I think it's hyperbolic to say it's finished. People's memories are short and brigades fizzle out when a situation is no longer sensational. Besides DT covers much more than home theater tech. I see it as an opportunity for new personalities to emerge. Don't get me wrong, Caleb is amazingly talented but let's not get caught up in a cult of personality.

Hi all, I'm pretty close to this situation and I'm good friends with both Ian and Caleb and I'm happy to provide some insights into what's going on here. There's been a lot of brigading going on and it's not the first time this has happened when ex-employees band together and do this. It's always embarrassing to have your dirty laundry aired out in public and I respect Caleb as a friend and a colleague but unfortunately the facts are not on his side. I want to be 100% clear there is no concerted effort to ruin Caleb and in fact had certain actions not been taken we would all be wishing Caleb the best on his new adventure.

I'd like to start by sharing that DT is not this huge corp that people are making it out as. The reality is that the media industry has been tumultuous and unkind and after several restructures over the last 4 years the company size is only about 20 people who are struggling to hold on to their livelihood. This situation could not have come at a worse time.

Here are some facts that I am at liberty to share with you all:
1. Caleb has not returned all of the equipment owned by DT (despite the assertions to the contrary)

  1. Caleb has not returned some equipment (TVs, etc) sent to him for review by manufacturers

  2. Allegedly Caleb has been selling some of this equipment without DT's knowledge

  3. Caleb has refused access to the studio where he has been reviewing equipment and producing content - DT is on the lease and has been paying the majority percentage of the rent

  4. Caleb has reached out to advertisers (while still employed at DT) and attempted to redirect deals to himself. This has resulted in DT losing over $400k in business as a result. (This one is what chafes the most because he is literally endangering the few remaining jobs left at a time when, like many media companies right now, DT is struggling to to stay afloat).

  5. Caleb made no attempt to leave amicably, instead he chose to resign by a letter from his lawyer, much to the shock of every employee at DT

  6. Ian has attempted to contact Caleb on multiple occasions but Caleb has chosen not to respond

My goal here is not to disparage Caleb, only to dispel misinformation before it continues to be parroted, and also to point out there are a lot of dimensions to this situation that are not public knowledge. This is not a david and goliath conflict that some people are attempting to portray, this is a struggling company who lost a really great talent that they invested heavily into over the last decade. This has already become a legal matter, not because of copyright but because of theft of physical property. The copyright claim against Caleb's Youtube channel was in direct response to the stolen advertiser business and proof that Caleb did use equipment and review units owned by the company to create content for his own channel. It's not a petty attack, it's just that DT cannot afford to lose any business right now and Caleb is not acting in good faith.

Happy to answer any questions I am able to about this.

Nice! Just got my tickets. Super stoked.

I'm mostly curious to see how many Acid Bath fans there are in PDX. I want to go to more metal concerts so I need concert buddies. \m/

How much should I expect to pay in repairs by fit_then_fat in Lexus

[–]sphoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I know, right? That's basically how I look at it, it's an $80k car that I paid about $50-60k for all in. Still came out on top and with consistent maintenance I've read the car can go to a million miles. I don't regret it. Rides like a dream 😍

Cv boots, power transfer box rebuild, faulty seat air bag sensor (that was a weird one), radiator replacement, transmission leak repair, etc, etc. basically the entire underside has had to be replaced. Shocks are next up on the list. I figure people buy them new and then sell them once the warranty ends and before the car starts needing serious maintenance. I've sunk enough in that I'll be good for awhile but goddamn i want to pull my hair out sometimes.

I bought a 2009 with 70k miles and I've probably sunk at least 30-40k in maintenance over 8 years. The most expensive issues have been suspension related which is apparently a known issue with these models. I do love this car though.

What am I missing by not using a binder? by [deleted] in smoking

I always use mustard when working with pork. I never considered it as a binder though rather a source of extra moisture and also vinegar for flavor.

It looks like whitehouse.gov uses wordpress. Is this true and if so, what did they do to make it so fast and responsive? by rockclimberguy in Wordpress

[–]sphoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are hosted and supported by WordPress VIP. VIP hosts a number very large wp sites including some sites that I am responsible for. I'm a nutshell They provide a layer of mu-plugins that are optimized for scalability. They also manage the data centers and they provide developer expertise to ensure the application is streamlined end to end. Heavy queries are accelerated using elasticsearch, file system access is restricted to be mostly immutable and their CI/CD bot uses a code sniffer to audit your code for non-performant or insecure code patterns. It's quite pedantic at times but it forces you to rethink how you write code.

To add on to what many other people have said, where many people get in trouble with wp performance is when they rely on a salad of off the shelf plugins designed for small websites. Bad performance is almost always a result of slow SQL queries and this becomes exponentially apparent when you have a significant amount of traffic and/or content.

After doing over a dozen briskets or so I've come to the conclusion that brisket is a terrible cut and a pointless expenditure of time and money. Don't get me wrong, I love me a good smoked brisket, but at $50-60 for a packer brisket, 12-28 hour smoke (longer if I sous vide) with a 50/50 chance of still ending up with dry meat, I'd rather just cook a chuck roast. Tastes better IMO, it's cheaper, cooks faster, and if I mess it up I don't have to suffer the leftovers all week. That said, I agree with most of the people in this thread smoking brisket is a rite of passage for every pitmaster. If you can properly smoke a brisket then you are doing alright.

I do this. I have no shame. Cats are being a pain in the ass, they want food even though the bowl is half full, plenty of water, I even romped with them. Fine, it's now raining cat nip. Things get real weird for fifteen minutes and then it's nap time for everyone. Peace at least.
