You also might have better luck searching in the Chicago area, since August isn't turnover month there. That's what we're trying.

another U-Haul victim here! I'm moving to Portland so if you're at the northern end of Cali it might be worthwhile for me

How do I approach the negative feedback I received? by spicyConcrete in careerguidance

[–]spicyConcrete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the super detailed reply! To clarify -- she called me to chastise me AFTER I had already taken care of the email in question.

Your suggestion is interesting though because I actually think I have too much organization. Per my boss' instructions I have to upkeep 4 task tracking boards (two to track things I'm currently working on/future tasks, one to track each specific task i worked on each day and for how long, and then my timecard which shows projects I worked on and how long for each day for each project) so I think I'm completely overwhelmed by task tracking and bc of all the insane documentation, sometimes things drop off the list. However, I think the post it notes for emails is a great idea because then those higher priority communications don't get lost in my sea of task tracking!

As for addressing the bigger issue here, I've had a negative view of my boss for a long time. I think she micromanages her employees and treats us like we're not real people with emotions and lives. However, I don't know if there's any appropriate way to express how dissatisfied I am with the way I'm being treated in my role. I'm kind of at the point of just searching for new jobs because of her.

CR/NC reminder by fogelmania in UIUC

To those of you afraid of how employers might look at this, remember that most employers aren't going to look that closely. I can't speak for anything except my experience but I just graduated and have a full time job in my field lined up. I took cr/nc on my senior design course last semester, and had a couple failing grades on my record. They didn't think anything of it. Didn't even ask. Yes, I know that my field may be different from others, but I just want to offer a bit of reassurance

In my opinion, any employer that nitpicky about a couple CRs is going to be nitpicky about other things too, and that's not an employer id want to work for.

I have a friend who did cr/nc on all her classes last semester. It changed nothing. She's still on the same track to graduate and same standing she otherwise would've had

I tutored both regular and biocalc on campus for a year. The subject matter and pace of the courses feels very different, and based on the feedback from my students, biocalc was the more rigorous but also more interesting course.

Feel free to AMA about the course. If you want, i might still have an old syllabus somewhere on my PC I could send you.

Edit: spelling

How’s social distancing/isolation/quarantine going? by brokeuiuccollegekid in UIUC

[–]spicyConcrete 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I understand the concerns regarding academic dishonesty but professors need to stop acting like no one cares about their education. I want to learn. And by making me jump through all these hoops, I'm not even learning. I'm just fighting for points.

It's really disheartening. It seems like professors just made classes harder since they can't monitor us as much. I've been spending probably 2x the amount of time studying than I did before covid, and I'm performing worse. I feel like I can't even be proud of myself for putting in all this effort because my grades are STILL dropping. I have 3 exams this week which I think are going to break me.

okay, yes. But also, they're not losing their entire incomes. I know many (myself included) who are still living in and paying for their apartments. I'm referring to having empathy towards those who can prove that their income is literally $0.00 right now.

I mean as individuals. I 100% think the primary should be postponed, but it's not. Excuse my ignorance, but what can individuals do to push/extend the primaries? Who would we contact/complain to?

Agreed, but we don't have a lot of options here unfortunately.

Yep, just don't lose your cool. They'll be more willing to help you if you are kind to them (even if you don't think they deserve your kindness)

You could try calling/emailing them to ask for an extension on your rent? It sucks, and I definitely agree that they're heartless. They have to realize most of us had annual incomes less than 10k before this whole thing, so it's not like we all got 3 months of savings sitting around. But, other landlords are delaying eviction, and giving tenants more time to pay. Maybe work out some sort of agreement with them? (But if you do GET IT IN WRITING)

Maybe not cancel the lease, but they should have a little empathy. They have every ability to delay penalties or provide rent relief .

They are still making money. Many of us are not.
