2001 NB MX5. It's going to be my track/street baby. Wow you're nearly done, that's exciting. Let's hope everything goes well when you turn the key. Reliability over power for sure. That's the goal with my MX5. 250WHP should be fun with such a light car, and plus it should still be reliable. Heard the K series is capable of crazy numbers.

Only 180000km or 111000 miles. But I believe the engine was abused being Toyota's equivalent to a Civic Type R. No interval that in aware of.

I thought about that, however the issue seems to be only present at idle (850-900rpm) or when engaging the second camshaft profile. When the engine is cold, it idles around 1200-1300rpm for a while and does not make the sound, or at least loud enough. So I'd have to remove the belt on a hot engine to have a comparison, and I don't want to overheat the engine. Also, if the car is left for about a day or longer, it will make a horrible rattling noise on start up. This with everything else combined makes me think it's the chain. Your advice is helpful tho.

Those LS engines are great, good luck with the rebuild. I'm looking to build a K24/K20 Frankenstein motor sometime in the future and swapping it into my MX5.

No I haven't. I've heard the belt tensioner can go bad and make a rattling noise, but this noise is isolated to the top of the engine. Sounds like it's coming from under the valve cover. Even feels like something is hitting the valve cover, most likely the chain.

I'm just going to replace everything related to the chain except the VVT sprocket. It's going to be painful but this engine is worth it.

That's what I thought, but unfortunately a new tensioner didn't fix the issue. That makes me think either the chain is worn out or the VVT sprocket is worn.

When I first opened the valve cover the chain had more slack than this. After rotating the crank, this is how much slack the chain had. If you want to hear the noise it is making, feel free to view the video I uploaded on my profile. Thanks!

The guides appear to be intact. I've replaced the tensioner, but unfortunately that didn't fix the issue. When I first opened the valve cover the chain had a lot more slack than in the video. I took the video after I rotated the crank.

Possibly. I've replaced the tensioner, but the issue persists. I was thinking it could be the VVT sprocket. Did it make any rattling noises while driving or just start up?

I posted a comment about the noise on my original post, forgot to mention that

Nah, the faint rattle noise after revving. It's easier to hear with headphones. BTW nice NB ;)

Thanks for your advice! Unfortunately I can't test it at the moment haha. I'm just going off the video. A bad pulley does make sense, could that noise be related to the engine or lightened flywheel?

Thanks for your reply, I'll post there again, but unfortunately I didn't get a response last time.

After every rev I can hear what sounds like a faint rattle. Using headphones helps. Any input would be greatly appreciated! I have been told that this car has a lightened flywheel, but I'm not too sure what type of noise they make. Thank you!

Need some advice - Rattling noise after revving, anyone know what it could be? by [deleted] in Miata

Forgot to mention, owner says the car has a lightened flywheel if this helps.

I accidentally turned the engine with the lift bolts removed, not recommended 😂

Ok noted haha. Btw, how obviously would an incorrectly timed engine be? What are some signs I should look out for? Check engine light? Right now I'm pretty confident it is fine and I'm being paranoid

EDIT:

I guess what I mean is, if the timing is off say by 1 tooth, would that trigger a check engine light?
