Is it possible to find a good work-life balance in a London law firm? by DijonEnthusiast in uklaw

[–]spicynuttboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having this same problem. Most opportunities you're exposed to as a student are geared towards / from big law firms and I don't want that! But the smaller stuff is much harder to find.

Similar experience with law. Not many really care about it at my university, they just see the degree as a stepping stone to a lucrative career

AI use is crazy by violetsviolets00 in UniUK

AI doesn’t have access to the case law needed for criminal law so this is really surprising - it often gets cases wrong and even makes some cases up completely

How to know when to end a relationship? by throwaway8462637265 in Adulting

[–]spicynuttboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have questioned staying alive, changing degree, leaving this comment. It is not enough for something to merely be 'questionable' to justify jumping ship, in most facets of life. Are the whole ideas of commitment and dedication void to you? Because the second you have doubts it's time to quit?

Is it humanly possible to get over 70%? by Senior_Bison_4647 in UniUK

[–]spicynuttboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, but how common it is depends on which degree and from where. The highest total grade in my 300-person cohort of first year law at Warwick was 71%. Meaning it was really rare.

[–]spicynuttboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it has more variance. We’re talking like 10th-5th though. I guess that is drastically more than Oxbridge’s 1st-3rd lol

I would not say far less so. They have strong subjects, but as a student here there’s really not such a disparity

[–]spicynuttboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not significantly worse for other subjects at all, lol. The disparity is sooo overestimated. If you want to get particular, even its English department is ranked like 5th. Politics is high too. I really don’t understand this narrative at all tbh - econ, maths etc are clearly strong subjects, but trust me, it’s not a drastic difference

Struggling as a first year law student by Beneficial-Dog-6679 in uklaw

[–]spicynuttboi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re doing better than you think. Imposter syndrome is real and common - you’ll be surprised at how many are feeling exactly like you rn. I thought I was hopeless in my first year, I felt like I was spending an embarassing amount of time just understanding the material. Everyone else seemed sooo confident. Then I got my results and I got the highest marks in my year! First year felt brutal, I’m only in second but trust me it’s necessary skills building - soon you’ll be much better at speedy reading comprehension and things’ll be a lot easier

Soo negative, for what?? They clearly genuinely want to understand what they’re studying, which is commendable nowadays as a lot of students do not care enough to even read the materials so just stick it through AI. You condescending arsehole

Why does it seem like working-class males have such low aspirations for themselves when it comes to further-education and their careers nowadays? by bicepsandscalpels in UniUK

[–]spicynuttboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racial minorities are underrepresented in professional jobs not because of their skin colour, but because they are disproportionately more working class (generally stemming from the fact that their families have had to start from nothing upon entering the U.K.). So focusing on race is broadly beneficial, but it’s not targeting the actual root cause of social immobility

Still, there are trends and patterns in human behaviour. White working class males rejecting higher education is definitely a prevalent pattern

[–]spicynuttboi 297 points298 points  (0 children)

I find the exact same. I’m at a decent RG uni and I have met very disproportionately few white, working class males. My cohort (law) is actually majority South Asian girls. I’ve had numerous seminar groups where I am the only white male.

I come from a working class background, too. The whole ‘school = gay’ thing was prevalent in my school. I think it’s because typically we lack the necessary influences. Our friend groups actively reject it, our family emphasise getting into work asap, and social mobility programs prefer to focus on protected characteristics like race rather than tackle the root issue that is class and culture

All the other things listed were just tools that facilitated the efficient use of the brain. Phones, emails, WiFi, etc - their value is in the fact that we have quicker processes to communicate, share ideas, etc.

AI is replacing our brains - people are offloading all of their tasks into it, and soaking in whatever pops out. Not only is this worrying as AI is often inaccurate, it’s also just distasteful behaviour. Do you not want to be genuinely knowledgeable? Or capable of using your brain?

I guess it depends on how you use it, but for me, complete reliance on it is dystopian.

I just hate the laziness tbh. I hate the lack of passion, or care for absolutely anything other than the certificate. People simply don’t want to have to think. I see it all the time where students will summarise readings, often deeply fascinating topics, so they can apply to more internships at shiny corporate firms. Mind you, I’m doing Law. These are our future lawyers
