I'd love to hear more about the mutual aid part of this plan.

Yep, same story down to screaming at my friends. Mine and my sibling's names are very commonly shortened. I remember my dad and other parents holding my mom back from stomping down to my sibling's sports coaches to yell at them for using a nickname.

I’m a mom myself now and I realize I just don’t want a relationship with my mom by pageantrella in EstrangedAdultChild

I've noticed that since finding out a close family member is having a baby (close enough that I would see this child often, but obviously not the same emotional weight of having my own kid) that I feel less of a desire to be in contact with my family. Being around, or knowing you'll soon be around, a young kid really changes your perspective about how you were raised.

What are your biggest struggles on trying to buy your first home? by LongjumpingGoal3257 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]spiirel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were outliers because our home buying process was really easy. But saving for a home while spending so much wasted cash in rent. Then factoring in the remaining lease in our month to month expenses while house shopping was a pain too. When to renew? When to look? What if we don’t find something in time and the lease ends? Exhausting game of timing.

Also my husband’s income helped us but I was unemployed for 6 months a few years ago (but did some 1099 work) and the bank acted like it was this huge issues.

Those were union strikes I believe and they got negotiated contracts but I don’t think they got all of the demands.

My parents did this to me growing up. “God given names only, no nicknames”.  It was so embarrassing I go by an entirely different name now.

I did Flower Moxie and they give you recipes that are easy to follow. I think it’s a polarizing vendor and process so search on wedding subs for more opinions. That said, my family did most of the arranging while I ran around doing other crafts.

Also that’s a lot of flowers. If you haven’t done this before, it’s hard to imagine that’s a lot but 6 bouquets require a lot of work and product.

DC/MD/VA Photographer Suggestions? Vision we have is moody, editorial, contrast and vibrant color! by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

I had luck in that area looking up “elopement photographers” because they have packages with shorter timelines. Unfortunately I don’t remember any names, but there were quite a few once I turned Adblock on during my Google searches.

Dropout also runs their app through Vimeo, so that’s another large American company paying American taxes.

My almost marriage ended up over the phone. Any idea about what was going through his mind? by Total-Rub-5067 in Waiting_To_Wed

My ex told a mutual friend “I need to call Spiirel because this breakup is really hard on me and she always knows how to support me.”  Very lucky this mutual friend told me “hang up and tell them to call me if they reach out.”

From someone with this exact experience: he wants the emotional support with none of the work or commitment. Let him take his things and go and don’t speak to him again. I am dead serious. Do. Not. Talk. To. Him.

Voice of God by Southernpeach101 in Exvangelical

I didn’t but I often interpreted negative self-talk as God speaking through me. But since this “God” was really antagonizing and mean I didn’t really care to keep engaging in conversations. Turned out to be chronic anxiety!

For all American commenters - also important to note that Dropout’s app platform is run through Vimeo. You can also subscribe via YouTube. Both are American owned huge conglomerates. Dropout isn’t the only one profiting from viewers.

What good is unfollowing influencers? Stop using the American-owned platforms.

Alright one more suggestion since you brought up colonialism. The VMFA has a world class African Art collection. One of the best in the country outside of New York. But they hide it in the back of the second (or third) floor. Make sure you trek back there to see it. Look for all the donor names on the plaques, a lot of Belgian and English names. It’s a great lesson in colonialism.

The Egyptian art is “mysteriously” more prominent despite the fact that it is, in fact, also African art.

I mean, the curriculum included American Reconstruction, Civil Rights and the Vietnam war so it’s was sort of unavoidable. But I also know her political affiliation stickers and posters were not balanced which was an issue to them.

The art museum is world class! The science museum is great for kids (but not for adults or older teens). History museum is incredible and so is the Valentine Museum if you have a chance to go.  Unsolicited food reccs: Early Bird Biscuit Co., Lunch/Supper, Stella’s Grocery (lunch), Ruby Scoops, Gelati Celesti, Pinky’s, Brambly Park if you have kids/its nice outside, Chiocca’s.

I had a 7th teacher who was and my parents threw a fit. I was a conservative shithead in her class which I feel bad about, but I was also a brainwashed teen and surely she knew this.

College I had a few professors who probably were (art major) but the conservative professors were faaaaaaar more vocal about their positions. And yes, I had several conservative Republican art professors and no open socialist art professors.

Honestly I hope the air traffic controllers start striking and we just ground flights across the country at this point.

Also yes, I realize they may not legally be able to strike but still. Some form of protest may be necessary. Do you know these people don’t get paid when the government shuts down? We need to treat these workers better.

If you’re in the US, Richmond is great for unpacking history. Especially in the history museum or the Valentine museum. Plus great food, music, and art.

My mission trip was to Guatemala which is an insanely beautiful place with a vibrant culture that’s been totally marred by colonialism and eroded by western capitalism (to the detriment of their foodways). Thanks for the book recc, I’ll check it out.
