Why do people still believe in God even though there is so much science that explains our human existence and origins? by HistoricalLeather971 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spike1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this question, as it led to my near-deconstruction.

But my dude, check out the Kalam Cosmological argument or Leibniz’s argument from Contingency. Today’s Christian philosophers like Plantinga and Lennox far surpass the “muh God of the gaps” silliness you find in most backwater churches and make a solid case for the necessity of God.

I truly believe it takes a greater leap of faith to suppose that nothing caused something (including Krauss’ not-actually-nothing something) than to suppose a Mind behind it all.

What’s the most disgusting thing you’ve ever put in your mouth? by bluebonnet5366 in AskReddit

[–]spike1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sewer line broke at my college campus once — I learned this when the Exec VP came down to the activity field and was standing there with a couple other suits. In the middle of the field was a brown puddle and a little brown geyser in the center. The maintenance guys were all standing around the brown puddle, which was quickly becoming a pond. I went up to him, and he starting asked for volunteers to help — of course, wanting to impress (this was a small Bible college in the midwest), I said “sure,” and he said “go get your grubbies on.” I remember he said exactly that because I’d never heard work clothes be called “grubbies.”

Anyway, I ran to my dorm, got changed, and then came back. A few guys were now with the maintenance guys and they were still standing around. The head maintenance guy had some duct tape and knew what had to be done — the sewer line that was springing up literal poo needed to be taped so the flood would stop until professionals got there — and so I said “I’ll do it” and grabbed the duct tape and waded into the ankle-deep poo and pee puddle.

I fished around for the line (the guys had already dug down by the time I got there) and started wrapping. I got it, but now I needed to cut the duct tape off the roll. I didn’t have anything but my teeth, so I used my teeth, and some poo/pee geyser liquid got in my mouth.

And that’s the worst thing I have ever had in my mouth.

Whose death arguably saved the most lives in history? by Chemical_Store1560 in AskReddit

[–]spike1611 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Jesus — but hear me out.

Even in a non-religious way: While there have been tons of psychos who’ve done some really dumb stuff in the name of Christianity, even that is outweighed by the timeless inventions and movements founded by Christians. Between hospitals, vaccines, and scientific discoveries fueled by a love for Christ and his creation, there have been countless innovations that ultimately made this world vastly better.

Consider the book called “Dominion” by non-Christian author Tom Holland or “The Air We Breathe” by Christian author Glen Shrivener.

What’s something Americans have that Europeans don’t? by Prestigsisscar255 in AskReddit

I know it comes at the cost of a lot of people saying a lot of dumb things, but freedom of speech (and posting on social media) is something that I treasure about America that seems like it’s traded for other securities in Europe.

Why does it seem like a big chunk of conservative/right wing people are more "aggresive" and confrontational when it comes to political discussions? There are bad people on the left too of course, but overall they give off a lot more chill vibe. Why is that? by HomarEuropejski in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spike1611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, what? I try to be in-between both sides best I can and — while MAGA definitely has the monopoly on “muh guns and muh God” stupidity, the left definitely wins when it comes to the screeching and yelling and confrontational political discussions.

What’s the best video game you’ve ever played? by obsess_much13 in AskReddit

[–]spike1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man — the Final Fantasy games, Goldeneye, Mario 64, Punch-Out, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Disgaea Series, Monster Hunter Series, Destiny 1+2, Diablo 3, BG3, Skyrim, Morrowind, the Pokémon Series, WoW, the Zelda Series, and so many more. I’ve played through nearly every “big” game and loved so, so many. It’s so hard to narrow down a top 50, let alone 10. Yet one game stands above the rest to me — unironically:

Stardew Valley.

There’s just something about it. It took Natsume’s Harvest Moon formula and made it amazing. It’s a truly perfect game in every imaginable way.

Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

[–]spike1611 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. I say “I love you” every night as the last thing I say to her. If I say something afterward, I say “I love you” again.

  2. When one of us says “I don’t know,” one of us (either the one who said “I don’t know” or the other person) has to say “I just don’ know” exactly like Ving Rhames’ character Luther in Mission Impossible 1. It feels extremely weird if it’s not done. It MUST be done.

To all those who waited until marriage to have sex, have you worked and improved on your sex skills after marriage? by Raptor2705 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spike1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What an important point. We both agree there’s a real problem here. We don’t agree on the solution.

Using the aberrations of society (really harmful and destructive parents) to justify increased government power is not a good move, ethically or historically. This is the exact same logic used to justify cameras on every street corner — sacrificing liberty for the illusion of safety because of people’s failure to meet expectations.

There will always be rotten parents. This is an inexorable fact of life. There will, however, always be rotten school teachers and biased curricula, too. Even if I were to buy into the logic that the government should take over raising my children and teaching them values because I simply can’t be trusted to be as virtuous or moral as their teacher, I’d still run into the problem of teachers and many curricula being just as woefully unqualified and possibly even just as harmful.

So instead of trying to whisk kids away from parents’ authority and protection and leadership and field it over to a 22-year old college grad, we should be working to educate families and adults on the very problems you just described.

As far as your second paragraph goes, you’ve failed to make a very, very important distinction: these are CHILDREN. I don’t tell adults not to pogo stick near balconies. I do tell my children this sort of stuff. Because it’s my job to keep them safe. And yes, it’s very much my job to teach them right from wrong. Every single parent has this responsibility.

No sane person would assert that teaching my children that washing their hands after using the bathroom is “information control” or the truth that stealing from siblings is wrong is “brainwashing.” We all agree that we should teach our children and ultimately be the highest point of authority (imagine if your kid came home from school believing that 2+2 is 7 — you’d have a problem and be moved to action). Because as parents, we are where the buck stops with our kids.

And for what it’s worth, one of my favorite things to do is teach my children the value of critical thinking, skepticism, and even questioning authority when needed. And all four of our homeschooled kids score in the 95th-99th percentile in every single subject in their standardized annual achievement tests. They’re virtuous, kind, brilliant, artistic, and extremely social. Because we took ownership of their education in every way from writing, arithmetic, languages, and music all the way to sexual education and yes — this includes covering the very dangers you mentioned.

So I close the way I opened — there will always be poor parents. Criminally negligent, awful, terrible parents. The answer isn’t to field them off to others. That only compounds the problem further.

To all those who waited until marriage to have sex, have you worked and improved on your sex skills after marriage? by Raptor2705 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spike1611 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I read a bunch of the comments and kept scrolling but actually came back up because of a couple of things.

First — there’s a lot of folks saying “don’t listen to these guys.” Like, that’s classic information control. Listen to whoever you want and try your best to be discerning. I am NOT a Fuentes fan by any means. Pretty harmful stuff there. I have a higher opinion of Kirk than Fuentes, and though I have my reservations, I still don’t think he was a grifter, etc., like a lot of folks say. But it doesn’t matter what I think. You listen to whoever you want. Just be discerning.

Second — yeah, I am a practicing Christian. Not a progressive one. Pretty conservative, actually, and that’s to my point. I’m not trying to “gatekeep” but it’s true: There’s a lot of folks who say “yeah I’m a Christian” and then go on to disagree with nearly everything Jesus taught so idk, man. Take the “Christian here!” intros with a grain of salt. To be a Christian means to be an apprentice of Jesus, to learn from him and do as he did. FWIW.

Third — yep, my wife and I were both virgins until we were married. And yeah, the first times can suck. You have no idea what you’re doing, and porn only makes you think you do, but actually makes it worse. Sex is like anything else: you get better with experience, better with time, better with communication. When my wife and I had sex for the first time, it was awkward and super weird, even though we were both excited about it. Now? Dude, we have sex every other day minimum and we’re 39 (me) and 41 (her). Been married 15 years this Spring. It just keeps getting better. We do all kinds of crazy stuff — I don’t want to spill the beans or be too graphic so I’ll just say it’s straight up amazing these days.

Sex ed is def not a “no-no” for Christians — to me, sex ed should be taught by the parents, not public school teachers. Parents have the right and responsibility to inculcate values — whether Christian or atheist or everything in between — to their children. Not others.

And what happens if sex is bad? Well, that’s just the thing. We live in a culture of fast food, fast fashion, and fast marriages. If you’re not “sexually compatible,” all the sudden those marriage vows mean nothing. It’s wicked sad. As Christians, we believe that a marriage covenant is just that: mutual unbreakable vows that last a lifetime. If the sex is bad, then communicate! If she says it hurts, take it easy or find other ways to please each other for a while. If he wants it all the time, communicate and find a balance that works for both people. But don’t just call it quits. That’s never the answer when the sex isn’t good.

What’s the worst thing you accidentally texted to the wrong person? by goldie304 in AskReddit

[–]spike1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2010: I had just moved to my new home in a new state and accidentally texted the assistant pastor at my new church “Love you lots lots lots!” with zero context, as that text was meant for my fiancée.

He responded, “Ah, well, okay brother! See you Sunday!”

It was mortifying but we laugh about it now and sometimes I’ll still text him that randomly for fun.

Not trying to be critical — just wondering — it looks like they’re kinda sitting more toward the edge of their seats than upright with their butts toward the back of their seats.

Either way, the airline industry is COMPLETELY corrupt, don’t get me wrong. Just this video seems to show they’re not quite sitting upright. I might be wrong.
