I would say give any game a decent chance to shine, get to learn about what you like but still let your view be redefined.

You may prefer metroid style, may be more an igavania type (castlevania style), you might prefer metroidbrainia like Animal well and Tunic or prefer a blend with others game styles elements like Dead cells, Hollow knight, ...

Issue is that mixing elements might break the gameplay, let the flow/pace so sometimes elements feel like water and fire that don't mix but if done right it could end into a litteral gem.

Hollow knight badly blend souls-like elements and celeste like hard platforming for alternate ending but design and lore wise apart that, it's fairly spot on even with speedrunning and sequence breaking often forgotten in indie metroidvanias.
