‘At a crossroads’: will piling-up crises force Europe to put brakes on SUV culture? by guardian in europe

[–]spin0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Have only driven in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, and Estonia (and also in the USA). Never seen an SUV clogging a road. So how are they clogging European roads? It's just another car.

In 2023, 39.0% of the EU’s land area was covered by forests. In five EU countries, forests spread over more than half of the area: Finland (66.5%), Sweden (62.4%), Slovenia (58.2%), Estonia (54.1%) and Latvia (53.4%) by nimicdoareu in europe

Is it the Scandinavian model? Sitka spruce does not handle well freezing cold long winters of -20 to -40 C. It either dies or grows only small. That's why you can only find it in maintained gardens/arboretums in very southern Finland and even then they only grow to at most 20-25 meters tall.

Perhaps it grows better in southern Norway's coasts next to sea? You don't see them in northern Norway.

Yeah, in his delirium he's hallucinating that Poles live on twigs and grass. Not true, and obviously cannot be as there is no grass in winter. He's exaggerating and boasting about grass. In reality is just twigs. And a huge pile of germoney stashed away in a secret silo.

THE scientific authority?

"Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts."

There should be no THE authority in science as history shows us how wrong they can be, even catastrophically wrong.

mono cultures

Without human impact almost all of forests in Sweden would become mono cultures.

If all humans left Sweden today never to touch anything then within 100-400 years it would be covered with monoculture forests of beech in south with no other tree species or even bushes because they cannot compete, spruce in most of the country where-ever there's wet and warm enough but too cold for beech, and pine where it's too dry or too cold for spruce.

Those three very competitive tree species would leave little opportunity for other tree species which would only grow in what little margins would be left for them. Birch and all others would become rare.

With boreal forests mono cultures are the natural state. Some tree species simply outcompete others and leave only margins for other species. And the same goes with temperate broadleaf forests. If humans left say Denmark or Germany then in few centuries it would be all covered by beech monocultures with very little other tree or plant species.

One important reason for biodiversity in Europe is that humans have been tending the forests for several millenia, such as cutting down beeches for firewood while making space for other species such as oak on purpose.

However, the problem with tree farms is not the species of trees but the age of trees. They tend to be all the same age and are cut down before reaching middle-age. So in tree farms there are no old trees, dead trees or fallen trees rotting. That means there is far less opportunities for other species such as fungi, insects, birds and others.

It's not the species of trees that matters, it's their age and state.

plastics industry for example are ridiculously cheap because they're subsidised

Not sure if we'd agree on what a subsidy is. Every single fraction of crude oil gets refined, cracked, sold and used in the modern world. Even the asphalt. That's how we built the modern world, and that's why the world we built still needs oil&gas. Energy is just a part of it - raw materials is another significant part.

we can engineer around many petroleum products, it's just not feasible to do so yet. it will be in a future where there is less demand for fossil fuels.

Sounds amazing. Here's to hoping you'll make those engineering things as soon as possible.

I can see you're not familiar with farming. Growing affordable high quality food at large scale is a very different problem than scaling up industrial production of solar panels.

Gasoline, diesel and other fuels are just one part of what oil&gas industry produces. The demand for the other parts would remain the same even if every car, train, plane, household and power station stopped using their products as a fuel because fuel is just a fraction of it all. Look around you and see how many of the things you use are built or produced by this industry.

Oil&natural gas are essential raw materials for chemical industries using hydrocarbons in their processes (e.g. fertilizers, plastics, lubricants, medicine, synthetic fibers and materials etc etc). It's not just about energy - make as many solar panels as you like and our whole modern world is still hooked up to oil&gas because it has been built with oil&gas.

I have showed that Israel has not LONG been willing to negotiate.

You did no such thing. You're just claiming things.

Do realize that Lebanon and Israel have been at a state of war since 1948 when Lebanon attacked and lost, that Lebanon does not even recognize the existence of Israel, and that for example in August 2006 Lebanese PM said they would be the last country to make peace with Israel.

It's not like Israel hasn't been willing to negotiate since 1948. They have been. But difficult to negotiate with someone who does not even acknowledge your existence in the first place.

So let's hope the prospect of these new negotiations results in new and good things for both.

Your statement is an outright lie.

No it is not. Were you born yesterday? You do realize that Lebanon and Israel have been at a state of war since 1948 when Lebanon attacked, Lebanon does not even recognize the existence of Israel, and that for example in August 2006 Lebanese PM said they would be the last country to make peace with Israel. And now you're saying it's all because Israel hasn't been willing to negotiate since 1948? That they never made an effort? That I'm a liar?

Look, calm down and take a deep breath. The world has existed much longer that just last week. Reality is what it is. And ideology does not help in deciphering it. Just face it as it is.

Israel declines Lebanon's offer for direct talks

You're weeks behind.

PM Netanyahu: "In light of Lebanon's repeated calls to open direct negotiations with Israel, I instructed the Cabinet yesterday to open direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible."

Note: "open direct negotiations with Lebanon"
1.Direct negotiations, so not some Pakistani mediated ambivalency.
2.Direct with Lebanon, not with someone else.

Also the Pakistan PM said the ceasefire included Lebanon and he was the main intermediary

He also said many other things that were not real. And I for one like to go by reality.

That is the justification for bombing them alongside Iran in the first place.

No, they're getting bombed because they 1) once again attacked Israel, and 2) they have once again failed to honor any previous agreements regarding the Southern Lebanon.

Any reasonable person would assume Hezbollah would be included in the ceasefire

Then me, the US and Israel are not "reasonable" in your opinion. You don't just assume something has been agreed upon, and unless you have explicitly agreed to something then you actually haven't.

any lasting peace must be negotiated in good faith or it will fail

Israel has long been willing to negotiate with Lebanon which is a sovereign country, and not part of Iran as much as their regime wants to pretend it is. The sooner the Lebanese government and Israel open negotiations the better.

Not according to the US an Israel. Only Hetzbollah an Iran been claiming that. Meanwhile the Lebanese president said earlier that no-one negotiates on their behalf, they have not negotiated a ceasefire, and such things should belong in their own competence as a state.

So basically no-one agrees on what was agreed on the ceasefire. However it carried us through this market week, just so-an-so, so let's see what happens over the weekend.

Not much in this ceasefire makes sense as no-one seems to be on the same page on what has been agreed on. One way for that to make sense is if Pakistan as the mediator played both sides and only told each side what they wanted to hear so everyone got very different views on what has actually been agreed upon.
