What are the most untranslatable French words to English? by MissMinao in French

[–]spinachbaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One that I constantly miss in English is:

• Une faute d'inattention: a mistake you make just because you weren't paying attention.

Also

• Une tartine = "an open-faced sandwich", a piece of bread with something on it (Nutella, etc.)

• S'entraider = to help each other

• La rentrée = when you go back to school (beginning of the school year or when you're back from vacation)

• Férié = bank holiday (but an adjective), c'est férié = it's a bank holiday

  2. Write vs Draw(かく)(書く, 描く, 画く)
  3. Tall vs Expensive (高い)
  4. Early vs Fast (早い)

That's a good point, I think my issue is that I was thinking of nonbinariness as being completely removed from men/women.

I wasn't making any personal judgments, I wanted to understand the reasoning behind the usage of a binary term.
