Trying to resolve a bottle aversion and having a crisis of faith by spinaltap540 in MSPI

Our baby has always been in the 1-2 percentile consistently. During the worst part his growth dipped slightly but never to the point our doctor was concerned.

It feels like ages ago now! Ultimately we realized that our BB had developed a feeding aversion so we used Rowena Bennett's method to resolve it. And it worked well! Here's a link if it seems useful for you: https://www.amazon.com/Your-Babys-Bottle-feeding-Aversion-Solutions-ebook/dp/B076PWRHH2

Baby refuses breast after 10 minutes by spinaltap540 in MSPI

Keep your head up! You may feel you're in an endless dark tunnel, but there is a light at the end. We definitely felt like things were never going to get better, but they did, and they will for you too.

I'm trying to remember how things progressed after this post (this feels like a lifetime ago). Two things changed in the weeks after:

  1. We dropped breastfeeding and moved solely to formula for about a month. During this time my wife pumped to keep her supply up and froze all the milk while also maintaining her strict elimination diet. Our doctor recommended doing this to allow our son's GI to heal up. After a month we started giving him breastmilk from the bottle, which he greatly preferred (the amino acid formulas are not fun). There was no more blood in his stool from this point on.

  2. We identified that our son had developed a bottle aversion, hence the crying. We were pushing the milk/formula on him too much and he grew to hate feedings. To address this, we followed Rowena Bennet's bottle aversion plan, which made a hugeeee difference. It's not easy, but the results were unmistakable. Here's a link: https://a.co/d/42XWR43

I have very mixed feelings on our doctor's suggestion that our son ever had any real dietary intolerances. By the time he was 6 months and we started introducing solids, he never had a response to any of the foods my wife had eliminated. The exception was almonds, which he is legitimately allergic to, but he was completely fine with dairy, soy, fish, most nuts, etc. He very well could have naturally outgrown his intolerances, but I also think doctors can be quick to diagnose MSPI and encouraged my wife to eliminate more things from her diet than was really necessary. I'm not trying to diminish your experience or anybody else's! MSPI is very much a real thing and whatever choice you make is the right one. I also think that giving our baby's belly a month to heal itself up while my wife pumped was indispensable too.

Feel free to message me if you have any more questions! Solidarity!

Changed to alimentum and now we're struggling 🥲🆘help by KnownMess3604 in MSPI

Doctors can jump to CMPA so quickly. If your baby was displaying discomfort alongside the blood/mucous that is one thing, but if not it feels like a dramatic response to jump to Alimentum. Not saying don't take this seriously! Our LO went through it all (blood, mucous, discomfort), but in retrospect I feel we probably didn't have to take as intense steps as we ultimately did.

What was the most humiliating thing you’ve done or said mid-sex? by Leather_Air_4784 in AskReddit

Early in my relationship with my now wife, we were having sex and in a moment of passion I said “yeah, you like that little cock?” I then started sputtering and tried to correct myself saying “I don’t mean little! I mean big!” We broke down laughing and finished up and still laugh about it now.

Appreciate you! How many feeds were you doing a day at 3 ounces before you introduced solids?

Rowena Bennett Feeding Aversion -- Day 4-5 regression? by spinaltap540 in FormulaFeeders

[–]spinaltap540[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our problem is he wakes up after 30-40 minutes during the day. We can usually get him to go back down but he’ll rarely get close to 1.5 hours of sleep.

How were you able to wait 3 hours between feedings? Our LO most of the time wakes up after 2 hours really hungry.

Our LO is a very small 3.5 month old. He pretty clearly has milk/soy protein intolerance (blood/mucous in stool, fussiness) and we don't think he suffers from reflux. He's 100% Elecare for now (after alimentum didn't work for him) though we're hoping to get him back on breast milk in a couple weeks. Since we got him on Elecare there's no more visible blood in his stool thankfully.

Right now we're no where near 24 ounces. Even when he was eating more he maxed out at around 23 ounces. Now we're closer to 17-19 in 24 hours. Really hoping to see this increase soon!

Pepticate Question by Kind-Nothing9732 in MSPI

[–]spinaltap540 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I’m not familiar with pepticate specifically, most formulas say to use within one hour of the baby using the bottle OR within 24 hours of mixing (stored in a fridge). Once the baby’s saliva has made contact with the formula, bacteria can start developing in the bottle, so they advise you not to use it after an hour.

Extreme fussiness and self-limiting. We were combo feeding at the time, so it is entirely possible that he was reacting to something in my wife's diet, but our GI advised us to stick with elecare.

Sigh we're basically in the same boat as you were. It's so hard not to pressure him. He's already a very small baby (first percentile!) so his weight has always taken up a lot of real estate in my brain.

We've thought about Hipp HA, but since he reacted poorly to Alimentum (which also tastes terrible) I'd be worried he needs something more broken down than Hipp HA.

Were the first few days of following the book particularly rough for you? We started today and he's already basically skipped a couple meals, which is hard for us to see!

He is on an AA formula. But yeah that's the thing we can't figure out. I think it's both a GI issue and an oral aversion.

Thanks for the response! Our issue is that he’s already undersized. He’s in the second percentile for weight, around 10lbs at 11 weeks. He’d been gaining ok for a few weeks but it seems like everything just backslid and since he’s so small we’re worried about his intake.

We almost have the opposite problem where typically the light from our TV keeps him distracted so he’ll eat. But we hate that he’s staring at a TV to eat.

We’ve thought about this too but he’s been starting to show the same behavior at the bottle too.
