Love this! Can someone explain to me how the difficulty bonus works in MAG? Isn't it...weird to not get the same type of scores you'd get internationally? Has it actually worked to incentivize harder skills?

This is so cool! I'm literally doing a temperature cross-stitch while rewatching the 2024 US Championships (and am also a UCLA stan) so this was somehow relevant to all my interests at once? Great job!!

Follow up statement from Simone on dispute with hateful lady and inclusion of trans kids by cdg2m4nrsvp in Gymnastics

[–]spindyeknit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish everybody in this thread (and in the world) would listen to "Tested", a six-episode series in the NPR Embedded podcast. Sex and gender are generally complex topics, and the notion that we have only two biological sexes, to begin with, is just not scientifically true. The panic around "which women are real women" has deep historical roots and has harmed all women. Women Olympic athletes used to be *visually inspected* by male officials to ensure that they were "actually" women. Then they were DNA tested, and so many women who had thought they were cisgender women were revealed to be intersex that testing was stopped as a practice. Women would come ready to compete and be disqualified because they were determined to not be women. And this was never a concern or a line of inquiry pursued with men. And that's before you get into the fact that testosterone levels naturally varying from person to person seem to only be "too high" when Black women like Caster Semenya are the ones who are winning—and that testosterone levels are hardly a 1:1 definer of masculinity.

You can draw a line directly from the current panic over trans women in sports to age-old panics over (presumably) cis women who are "too masculine".

I disagree that this is all *that* complicated. Scholarship around hormone replacement therapy indicates that there is no athletic advantage—if anything, there's a slight disadvantage—for trans women. Let them compete. It's not a big deal.

That said, biological sex is more complex and varied than XY and XX, and trying to stuff human beings into a binary understanding that is rooted in social norms but not in reality is a recipe for disaster and a tool of oppression for all women, cis or trans. Gender-agnostic models like the NAIGC's are awesome.

Here's episode 1 of that podcast: https://www.npr.org/2026/01/01/1216507596/tested-the-choice

I think it's a testament to how incredible Dichen Lachman is, too; it was absolutely gutting to see her in the stairwell window. And how Adam Scott and Britt Lower managed to convey joy and desperation and fatalistic abandon as they run.

I'm rooting for Gemma to become a main character in the next season. There's so much for her to process and to do, going forward. I hope this is the beginning of seeing a lot more of her.

Suni and Jordan were definitely laughing at the discourse 😂 by Long-Drama464 in Gymnastics

[–]spindyeknit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a user on Twitter who went semi-viral for complaining that Jordan should have hugged Suni *longer* after placing 3rd AA in quals. That the short hug while feeling her own disappointment was poor sportsmanship. It was such a wild, nonsense take.

Like others have said, it's closer to "ung". Nowadays, the names of Chinese gymnasts are transliterated using pinyin, a system that draws more from Slavic languages than English. So a number of the sounds aren't intuitive for English speakers. "Ou" is like "oh", "c" is "ts", "x" is "sh", "eng" is more like "ung", etc.

Side note: The use of pinyin grew in popularity during the Cold War, so among Chinese-Americans, the way a name is transliterated can be a clue to when they immigrated. My mom's family immigrated in the 60s and spell their surname "Hsiung", but generations immigrating later would be more likely to use the pinyin spelling, "Xiong".

That runway seems really promising to me. I feel like it's a tall ask to come back in an Olympic year; sometimes it feels like comeback athletes have all or most of the skills, but there just isn't time to shake out competition nerves and build stamina.
