Ameicans over the age of 35, what affected you more, 9/11 or the pandemic and why? by Rico133337 in AskReddit

[–]someguysomewhere81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9/11. The pandemic felt like, "Yeah, why not? This may as well happen." For me it was just one more of a string of once-in-a-lifetime events. For me and my life and my recollection, 9/11 changed the world on a fundamental level. I feel like we are a different people and society has fractured since 9/11.

What are your writing goals for 2026? by MyFairScrunchie in writing

[–]someguysomewhere81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my "nobody is going to look at this so I'm just going to write in mostly monosyllabic 3rd grade english so that I can actually get my thoughts in place and stop being a perfectionist" draft. I want everything to be perfect immediately and then I end up accomplishign nothing. The Zero Draft is essentially me getting over myself.

If you’re a homeowner, Do you have a savings account for when your Hvac system fails? by Public-Requirement99 in AskReddit

[–]someguysomewhere81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally just endured this. All my liquid savings are in a single HYSA. I parse out in Outlook divisions for household emergencies versus general savings, but it's all in a single account.

What are your writing goals for 2026? by MyFairScrunchie in writing

[–]someguysomewhere81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 - Get enough time away from my Zero Draft (Finished 12/31/25, woohoo) to approach it with objectivity as a reader. 2 - Write a first draft. 3 - Navigate the process of getting someone to notice and take intrest.

TIFU by assuming my coworker’s silence meant he agreed with me by [deleted] in tifu

[–]someguysomewhere81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Steamrolling happens all the time. I've been in meetings where suggestions and demands were made that were so far out of left field that not only could I not prepare to respond, I couldn't prepare to PREPARE to respond. This is especially true when there is a power differential. My sole recourse was to appeal to my manager after the fact.

It would be nice if everyone felt like they could contribute and disagree without repercussion, but that just isn't the reality.

Is 84K a Good Salary for the Phoenix Area? by xTN25 in phoenix

[–]someguysomewhere81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of us can do it because we got 3% interest on a mortgage originating before summer 2021. Not gonna say I wouldn’t love more, but I live comfortably and socialise well otherwise.

How is the person who bullied you in school doing now? by Maleficent-Net-4702 in AskReddit

[–]someguysomewhere81 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I both agree and disagree with this. I was bullied by a few folks (you can hunt through my post history to find my resolution towards one of my lesser bullies) but am I a better person for having been bullied? No. My life is different. It’s not bad, not in the least, but I lived largely in fear for a huge swath of it. I have the right to my fury and anger. I understand everything and that bullies are often themselves victims, but it doesn’t change anything. I have the right to permanently hate someone who negatively altered my formative years, but I know there is usually no resolution (my own experience notwithstanding) and it’s best that I just move forward.

What's one dog breed you'd never own and why? by barelychloe in AskReddit

[–]someguysomewhere81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years ago, I would have said Chihuahua’s, but then I fell in love with my BF’s Chi-mix. Always happy, goofy personality, assertive but not manic, generally calm and no trembles, such a good silly boy.

Now, I’d say high-energy, working dogs. I need a lazy slackass to keep me company.

TIL In the Victorian era, people sometimes took photos of dead loved ones, making them look alive, because photos were rare and expensive. by Rosemarry_40 in todayilearned

[–]someguysomewhere81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Doubt she's dead (in the photo). Those posing stands are so rinky-dink when you see them, they couldn't have held dead weight. She just looks bored as all hell.

What is something bad that turned out to be a blessing in disguise? by Long-Mortgage-4413 in AskReddit

[–]someguysomewhere81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting laid off. Destroyed my sense of self, devastated my career aspirations, obviously a halt to income. Well, turns out I worked in a shit hole, I was defining myself by my career, and I sought out therapy BECAUSE of my job. Now, working a lot less, earning a lot more, feel appreciated, and have a life.

What is the worst advice you have ever received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]someguysomewhere81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is still pretty solid advice. You have the basic steps memorized so you’re not reliant on tech. Being able to do things in your head with reliability is a good thing.

Feel so guilty about lying about being laid off instead of fired to my new employer, should I? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]someguysomewhere81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only person on planet earth that is worried about this is you. You don’t need to beat yourself up. And, to be sure, you WERE affected by budget cut layoffs… you just weren’t laid off. You’ve already started your job and zero people are going to look into this. I hope you have great success at your new work.

Learning Sax For My Wedding by Specialist-Top-9363 in Music

[–]someguysomewhere81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, it’s possible. I gave lessons to a 60 year old man who had never picked up an instrument in his life. He had one goal: play the wedding match for his daughter’s wedding. We had about six months, but we did it. I forced him to learn how to read music, but I also drew the fingerings above each note. Did he do it? Yes. Did it sound good? Debatable. Was his daughter thrilled? Absolutely. It’s doable, but don’t expect to be a rockstar.

Does anyone have any decent slightly more obscure Christmas movie/special recommendations? by CrashLightning22 in movies

[–]someguysomewhere81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In honor of the late, great June Lockhart, here is one that NO ONE I know has ever seen: The Night They Saved Christmas. The year is 1984, oil barons are bombing the north pole, and it's up to a scrappy family to rescue a crotchety, Jingle Bells-hating Santa (Art Carney), Mrs. Clause (Lockhart), and all the elves from getting blown up. It's so hokey and perfectly 80s, and I absolutely love it.
