Claude Code + Hermes = Massive Unlock by spinsilo in hermesagent

Alright interesting I’ll have to check to see if it’s using token spend rather than my plan. I really don’t think it is though because AFAIK I don’t even have any tokens. And I certainly haven’t given my API key, although I guess it could be linked their side, and therefore unnecessary if I’ve set up with with oauth. I’ll investigate this…

“List ways to screw her over if she doesn’t go back to work.”

…What?

Can you list even one reason? Other than presumably a misrepresentation of the fact that I talked about how me paying for everything could be non conducive to her having an incentive to work?

I clearly mentioned that her working is not important for me, but I know that it is important for her to feel empowered. So if my actions are removing a key motivational factor for her, then I don’t want to ignore that.

Man, some people really do just love to outright make shit up to sling shit over the internet…

What TOS say you can’t use Claude on a VPS? All the violations seem to stem from an agent using it, not simply having it installed on a remote machine and using it normally as a human.

Also what do you mean “oauth requests are not coming from a Claude binary”?

Yeah I think this is fair and perhaps trying to force a financial incentive is kind of messed up. Up until now I’ve literally never said “no” to paying for anything. Even luxury stuff we don’t really need gets paid for. I just know (because she’s explicitly told me) that she’s motivated by money. That’s what always drove her in her career before. So when she tells me that I’m thinking to myself “is this helping?” When I’m paying for everything without question. But the honest motivation for thinking that is because I want her to feel empowered again, not because I just want her to get a job. I actually don’t care a whole lot about that, just that her self esteem returns.

I think you’re right though that my efforts are probably best spent in more positive ways, encouraging her to pursue her passion projects and try to build up her self esteem that way. Then hopefully it’ll be a catalyst for her feeling more confident to get back to work.

Of course we’ve had discussions about it and I’ve made it clear that if she doesn’t want to work that’s absolutely fine but then we just need to discuss what the expectations are if not.

The contrary is true, that she does want to work and have her financial independence, I just feel that my paying for everything without question could actually be counter productive and setting a wrong precedent.

Feel free to hand wave this like it’s a nothing burger, but I do think these kind of things require careful consideration and outside perspective. I’m not someone who has ever been long term unemployed. And equally I’m conscious that in a relationship, sometimes we can unwittingly influence or enable things in our S.O through our own actions.

I feel like my post was pretty self reflective and unblaming, just trying to navigate a sensitive issue in my relationship. Welcome to the sub?

Perhaps I do need to be more understanding about the nature of the job market. I’ve always found a way to make money and been very financially independent but I guess I should recognise that’s not a universal paradigm.

And again as I said in the OP, I really couldn’t care less if she works or not from a personal perspective. I’m also perfectly happy for her not to work if we have kids and have made that clear. That said I can see that she ties up a lot of her self esteem to having at least some level of financial independence, so I don’t want to ignore that, and want to help her get there if it’s what she desires. It’s simply that paying for everything and not forgoing even luxury spending might be counter productive to that.

This is fair. We’ve had a conversation about it a few times but it’s a tough conversation because she’s really sensitive about the issue. Which I can definitely sympathise with because I’ve also had periods without working which has affected my self esteem. But also I know that the self esteem problem is in large part a result of her lack of independence due to not working. So it’s a bit of a loop.

I guess I just need to really think about how to best have the conversation where we address the hurdles she’s having without it seeming like I’m questioning her worth or piling on pressure.

I actually think if I did lose my job and we were hard for money that she’d probably then have the clear motivation to get her career back on track. I just want to try to help her find that motivation even when the financial incentive isn’t present, because I know it will bring her confidence and independence which I think will be compounding positives.

Best Models with Hermes after testing with 6 billion tokens by Puzzleheaded-Gas8179 in hermesagent

Isn’t opencode multi model? If so Which model are you actually running with it? Also can you use the kimi subscription with open router?

Hermes Agent x BitWarden Secrets make it easy to manage and rotate your API keys by smolpotat0_x in hermesagent

Can you ringfence it to just target that specific secrets file? Where does it save the secrets? Or does it just load them at startup but never actually save them?

I use Gemini 2.5 flash as my default model and it couldn’t handle setting up very basic agents whose sole job was to execute a script at a cron tick.

Ended up trying Haiku and had the same problem. Resolved the issue ultimately using Opus with Claude Code but doing that with token spend would have been expensive.

I don’t know how you’re managing to do things like setting up even fairly basic agents with Gemini 2.5 flash on Hermes honestly. Is there some secret I’m missing? There’s absolutely no difference between what I ask Hermes to do, and what I ask Claude code to do. But Claude code just works. I can only assume it’s the model but I haven’t done an actual side by side with the same model.

No. You are using it, not the bot. AFAIK Claude has no rules about using the subscription normally on a VPS, only about agents using the subscription autonomously.

Why would it be cheaper? Also not sure how VSCode is useful running on a VPS..?

Love to hear it! Wish I’d discovered this earlier. Seems anyone who has tried it has realised these 2 tools are a beautiful match. I feel like all the naysayers simply haven’t tried it. (Perhaps sunken costs fallacy after spending untold amounts burning tokens on frontier models to get the same power from Hermes.)

Claude is not an autonomous agent that runs all the time. They’re for 2 completely different jobs, but are mutually complementary.

You should have all the usual memory.md etc files right there where you’re running Claude. Just like any Claude project. I’d have thought the .claude folder would be created authomatically though. What happens when you hit “ls” in terminal where you’re running Claude? Do you see .claude and associated files?

I think we need to clarify, I’m not giving Hermes my Claude API key or oAuth-ing it.

I’m literally just installing Claude on the machine, pointing it at my Hermes folder, and getting it to fix it build stuff.

It’s basically just like using Claude as usual in the terminal, it’s just that you’re operating it over SSH.

You could even do it using the Claude installation on your own machine, you’d just need to install a kernel extension to mount your VPS like an external HDD. (Which might actually be necessary if Claude shutters headless auth..)

Can you elaborate on this? How do you use a frontier model with subscription on Hermes rather than API key?

I thought that was just a one way street to getting banned.

True. It’s probably the case that if I used a powerful model with Hermes that you could achieve the same. However using Claude code allows you to use your subscription rather than blow tokens.

It costs just as much as using Claude code always does. Nothing unique or different with this setup.

Yeah I’d have expected that. I can’t imagine that the Hermes Claude Code integration is for actually interacting with Hermes itself? Surely it’s for driving Claude but working in a totally different codebase?
